If you want to use the latest software from Apple buy the latest operating system. iTunes is free--meaning apple is getting no money from it directly--if they leave a hook in it to encourage an upgrade so be it.
Im also getting tired of people b*tching about the fact that their 5 year old powermacs won't be supported by OSX. Sheesh I don't see any PC users trying to run Win2000 on a 486.

Take a look at the site that's hosting this stupid little plugin. I read some of the articles, and this guy is absolutely full of sh*t. He hates MacOS X because of some vague concept of "UNIX is confusing to me, and I don't like it." In fact, he hates just about everything Apple has ever done for any reason that happens to fall out of his @$$. Unbelievable. And he calls himself a Mac fan.
A big wet kiss for anyone who can get iTools to run on 8.5/6.
Just kidding, but I really do want iTools!!!

You need to search the Mac sites on iTools info. There is a simple extension you download for 8.6 (I don't believe 8.5 works though it might) to enable the networking protocols, and a patch to make the installer run.
Search macnn.com, maccentral.com, xlr8yourmac.com, you'll find it.
Read the acticles that the guy wrote. While I'm sure that a lot of people will disagree with him, he does seem to have more insight then Apple does right now. Some of his ideas my not be right, but never the less are better than everyone just agreeing with what Apple i.e. Steve Jobs says and not thinking for yourself.

P.S. Getting rid of the keyboard power button is proof enough that Steve doesn't relieze what makes a Mac a Mac.
System requirements for an application should have only to do with genuine technical system requirements. If iTunes runs on 8.5 or later, it should install on 8.5 or later. To artificially inflate system requirements for the purpose of marketing OS 9 to users is immoral and unethical. That's a Microsoft tactic, and it's why Bill Gates is a piece of c*** and will rot in h*** forever.
I looked thru his articles and while I don't agree with a lot of what he's saying the "alternate dock" he presents is very very interesting. Maybe Apple should implement some of those ideas for MacOS XI or whatever they are gonna call an update to OS X.
So it would be better that Apple spend much more money developing for and testing on older versions of system software? Then, after making that investment, it should still be a free program, right?
Since Santa Clara Valley engineers are on the cheap, this is quite reasonable.
OK. Got it now.
Try downloading iTunes - it keeps giving me an error that I need to select the operating system I'm using - but there's no way to do that on the download page. Is the server perhaps polling my machine (OS8.6) and giving that error to try to defeat the iTunes patch?

What a crock!
It really ticks me off that Apple tries to force customers to use OS 9 when they don't have to. iTunes and several other programs all run absolutley FINE under 8.x when they hacks are applied. The hacks don't change any functionality. They just get rid of the "requirement" built in to the program. Sorry, Steve. I'm NOT buying OS 9. Why should I? It doesn't do anything for me.
