Apple email spells the demise of iReview

An email sent from Apple to sites that have been featured on iReview indicates that the service has been terminated. "Dear iReview Badge recipient, iReview has been removed from http://www.apple.com. Please remove any badge and hyperlink references to iReview from your Web site. Thank you, Apple Computer Internet Services." No reason for the discontinuation of iReview was given, which disappeared following the debut of Macworld Expo Tokyo.

Apple launches a service, spends time with it, wastes other people's time (who took their time to write reviews), and then cans it with no reason.

Doomed to die

Created at a time when Apple was being pushed by stock market analysts to define its internet strategy (despite the fact that Apple had been happily making a lot of money with their online store for a long time). iReview was always about appeasing the market. It served that purpose and now the market has moved on.

Interesting that Deja tried to model itself on reviews as well (although of items, not sites) and recently got bought up by google (actually Deja died and google bought their newsgroup archives). It seems that the net may demand a valid business model after all. About time.

I saw this coming a long time ago. The 'Net was apretty big place and iReview wasn't grwoing fast enough. Still, my grandmother liked it, kinda the top 10 for each category....

ireview was lame

I saw this coming. Apple should have bought the ireview domain and hired a staff to update iReview.com everyday. No one is going to visit ireview if it is behind Apple.com. Only nerds, people buying new macs, and people that need tech help are going to give iReview hits.

Furthermore... iReview should not have been mac specific. They should have made it fun for people on any platform. it could've been a great marketing tool if they used it right.

iReview never wrote back

I have a website that deserved being reviewed by it since it has 14 topics, and over 1000 links that I verify monthly, including over 200 Macintosh links. Well I submitted it, and there was no feedback whatsoever. If you provide no feedback, how do you know when your site might get reviewed. The least they could have done is e-mailed me and told me that I am Xth place in line before my site gets reviewed, and how far along they were before making the review. But nothing. And there was no place to submit feedback about iReview on Apple's own website. Surely more places would link to it, if they got corresponding links.

Dump iCards too

Dump iCards too. What's the point of Apple doing this c***. Can we ever get away from being perceived as a toy computer company . This stuff only makes the Mac a harder platform to defend.

I'm more interested in what cool software is running on the Mac than sending someone a dorky greeting card. Come on Apple get out of this lame trip your on....and I beg you please don't s**** up OSX and turn it into some kiddie OS.

If Apple wants this kiddie stuff then create a consumer section of the website.

How about the Apple Macpro's section with cool geek stuff and the Consumer section for grandma and the kiddies.

tried, failed, OK

Better to try and fail than to never make the attempt. No biggie.

Call 'em dumb, but they do stuff to bring service to their users. This one didn't catch on. You can be as cynical with that idea as you like.

It's not like all the sites were Mac-web sites. Some were quite fun and had nothing to do with Macs. I wish I bookmarked more. But they did have very limited viewership, it's true.

BTW, never use Expedia.com. Now I'll have to find a new place to relay my father's horrible experience..

iCards is great, though.

I sent a valentine using iCards, I was out of town on V-day, it was much appreciated. And suppose I get a new mac, I see nothing wrong with sending an iCard with its picture on it to all my PC buddies.

the loss of iReview, on the other hand, is hardly earthshaking.

I'm a consumer.......yet neither a grandma or kiddie. If all cool geeks are such arrogant $%^holes as you, it's no wonder the PC world has such a low opinion of Mac users.

iReview retargeted

Let's get this straight. As one comment earlier noted without much info, Apple now has edView for education. Using the tabs, go to EducationiTools for EducationedView. In fact, the site now has some really interesting info on it. I looked under Physical Sciences, and now find 15 pages of reviews of items related to physics some of which I know are good sites and most look interesting. iReview's flimsy coverage of science and math is something I constantly complained about in my comments on any site that I submitted for review. But edView looks like it has some really worthwhile info!

It was flawed�

What apple should have done was to create a website for apple's buisness where they sold computers and the like (www.apple.com). They should have created a 'users' site similar to MSN where iReview and other things would have had a home. They could have had an ISP and stuff. Oh well it was c*** at apple.com i wont miss it at all.

What? Consumers are just anybody who wants to write a letter, check their email, balance their cheque book and maybe play some games. Usually solitaire or chess. Guess who fits into that description? Probably 80% of computer users. That includes all the rocket scientists who just want to relax with their mac when they get home. Not just Grandma and the kiddies.

It's not PC users that don't like the Mac, it's arrogant PC users like you that don't like the Mac.

A Cultural Thing?

Whether we like it or not, we should get used to this. I have to say, there's something oddly Bolshevik about this whole "things getting Steved" business. He knows what he things he knows works, and in the service of that, things disappear in the middle of the night without a trace. No explanations, no one to ask. Maybe you liked them, maybe you didn't, but they're GONE, and they're not coming back.

And I am a Mac fan - a big Mac fan. I learned Cocoa and am working on some apps, and I've owned a Mac for nearly 15 years, but it's hard to get involved in an Apple project, if tomorrow I could be axed (if that is really what happens, since no one ever witnessed it...).

By work do you mean maintaining and updating a next generation OS for final release or using it's servers to host a AOL knock off?
BTW To the two people arguing over who makes PC users dislike mac users...chill...who cares what they think. The mac is not designed for on niche market....it is practically perfect for any occasion
