MacBook random shutdowns
A disgruntled MacBook owner recently launched a webpage focused on the MacBook random shutdown problem plaguing some users. Since Apple launched the consumer laptop earlier this year, some users have described problems with their MacBooks randomly turning off. Despite the widespread problems, there has been no official acknowledgement by Apple. The newly created website, trying rally MacBook owners experiencing problems, features a banner proclaiming "Think MacBooks don't crash?" The newest posts detail one bloggers recent attempts of getting Apple to repair the crashing MacBook--only to eventually convince them to replace the computer. Other bloggers link the problem to an overheating CPU due to poorly placed thermal paste.
Earlier this year, Apple reported that it accidently shipped some MacBooks with a blocked fan vent, which prevented air from circulating and properly cooling the laptop.
Reports on the blog range from satisfaction with Apple's repair work to outrage at the lack of effort--leaving some users hesitant to even try Apple's repair service. Users at the MacNN Forums have reported similar problems in an ongoing thread with some users reporting success getting repairs and less frequent problems after recent firmware updates.

1st Gen...

While this is no defense for Apple, I don't entirely sympathize with early adopters. It's not like major bugs are a new thing when it comes to 1st generation technology. The conventional wisdom is "buy at your own risk" because you're going to wind up as a field-tester.

I don't think its fair to point the finger at 'early adopters' even if it has become somewhat customary of late. It shouldn't happen, full stop. Its Apples fault, no one elses. And its not like 2nd gen's of certain Apple computers have not had serious issues either. 2nd gen G5 iMac anyone? Not to mention a multitude of G3/4 iBooks.
But for the record, my bone stock MacBook hasn't done this at all, and it was one of the 1st off the shelves when they were released, Its used for hours every day.
I suspect that although it may well be a significant problem for many MacBook owners, i'll bet that the majority of MacBook owners don't experience it at all.

My MacBook had that problem. I took the laptop in. The Mac Genius said that Apple had this system available for capture. They replaced my logic board -- new revision. It doesn't shut off anymore.

And how many of these folks installed cheapass third party RAM or hard drives? Clearly APPLE MUST FIX THIS PROBLEM!

While I agree that MacBooks or MBPs that suffer this problem legitimately should be fixed free of charge, I've yet to see any report from anyone anywhere that says this ISN'T happening.
If Apple were denying repairs or pretending the issue didn't exist, that would be one thing. But they aren't. They're fixing them as they receive reports. What else are they supposed to do?
For the record, my BlackBook has been flawless. It was a little too hot when I first got it, but the firmware update fixed that and now it's just the best laptop I've ever owned. I think I speak for the VAST majority of MacBook owners.
Those who are having a problem: get off your butt and call Apple or your local AASP. The problem will be fixed. Quit whining.

there are reports of people going in to apple stores, talking to the genius and getting the brush off or having it sent in for a logic board replacement and getting it back with only the discoloration problem fixed.
worse yet, there are reports of people getting their logic boards replaced only to have the problem start again in a matter of a few days.
lots of people have concluded that apple has not yet found out why it's happening but that a logic board replacement works as a stop gap measure. that said, with logic board replacement sometimes taking several weeks, some folks, myself included, are wary to send it in and not see it again for a whole month.

bad battery?

I have one of the first MacBook Pros, after I had it a while. it would shut off exactly 9 minutes after unplugging AC adapter with full battery. Battery fell under recall, got it replaced, no more problem.

Now what?

I just got my MacBook back from repair yesterday due to discoloration issue. Last night during normal use (web browsing, email) the machine just tuned off BOOM, black screen. At first I was in shock. The only think I could do is push the power button to power it on. When the machine got to the login screen it turned off again, just like that I got the black screen again. The same thing happened again. Only in the 3rd try I was able to get the machine to completely boot. My friend was jokingly saying the "Apple broke your MacBook" since it just came back from repair... This incident just got me thinking about how this happend to me before. I was thinking to myself back then that it was a problem of waking up from sleep or maybe I turned the machine off accidentaly... As soon as I get home from work I will call Apple, or might just go to the closest Apple store. I'm sure that Apple will recognize the issue and resolve it, just like they have done before. I guess the issue now is the root cause... Good luck to everyone, and keep sharing!
