VirtualPC 4 for OS X

updated 06:00 pm EST, Tue February 20, 2001

A representative of Connectix reiterated today that the company still plans to release an OS X version of VirtualPC 4.0 shortly following the release of Mac OS X in March. "We are committed to releasing a version for Mac OS X, and we plan to release it as close as possible to Apple's release of OS X," notes the rep.

    Rumor: windows' windows

I was told (by someone I can't name) that the next version of Virtual PC will have individual windows that will co-exist with native carbon/cocoa windows. Basically just like what Apple does with classic environment windows.

    sweet.

    make it UNIX

Why don't Connectix take advantage of the Os X operating system. Please do not (emulate) windoze like Os 9 do. Make it UNIX based. Seriously it's terrible when you want to work something that needs raw power like hi-end apps and games stuff.

    make it UNIX?

eh, if you don't know what you're talking about, quit talking out of your a$$.

the difference in hardware architectures is why it's slow. and if you 'make it unix', you wouldn't have the win32 API's.

    so, shutup.

    You Dork

Hello, brain donor? Virtual PC is a "bare metal" emulator that emulates an x86 processor - you can RUN Unix on Virtual PC, brainiac! While their might be a tiny speed boost by rewriting it in Cocoa, nothing will change the fact that it is running on a PPC processor -- and emulating Unix to emulate Windows is obviously not a solution.

    make it UNIX??

Virtual PC does not emulate Windows. It emulates an Intel-based computer. That is why you can run any OS on it. Connectix bundles Windows with the emulator for the convenience of the users who want it.

I think that you are looking for the "Red Box," the mythical Windows-compatibility environment for MacOS X. Perhaps, someone will release something like that, but there is no evidence that Connectix will.

um, can I upgrade from 3?

or do I need to upgrade to 4 now for $80, and then shell out more $$$ for the Carbon/Cocoa/whatever version?

    upgrade cost

that's why I haven't upgraded to 4 yet, not before the OS x version is out (not gonna get screwed out of more money because I bought the previous version just over 1 month ago)

    upgrade from VPC 3

You can get a *free* upgrade to VPC 4, if you bought v. 3 after November 1......

I bought it a year ago - I'll wait until OS X compatible VPC, also......

    This is awesome

Thank you Connectix! I didn't plan on upgrading my VPC from 3, but I will if I can get a carbonized (or, better yet, Cocoa) version. Thank you! My only other request is do it ASAP after X is released and convince Macromedia to do the same with all their stuff! ; )

    Free update?

I wonder if current VPC 4 owners will get the OS X version of VPC 4 free or have to pay again.
