Apple CD-RW high-speed flaw

updated 05:35 pm EST, Tue February 20, 2001

A recent article in Apple's Tech Info Library notes that the CD-RW shipping with some Macs can read, but not write, to high-speed CD-RW discs. Apple suggests that users "only use CD-RW discs that are rated from 1x to 4x speed."

    Similar issues with CDRs

I have a B&W with a Sony 12x8x32 CDRW internal. It is similar to what is in the new G4s. It has a problem with Imation 16x rated disc. No problems with any other so far. Kinston Hypermedia has given excellent results. Using Toast with this drive and the Imations produce a similar result. Failure.

    LaCie

I have a LaCie external 4X4X24... and i am wondering that if i get a new iMac, the one with the cd rom drive, will the other specs be lesser or will it just be that the cd-rom is added??

    Read between the lines...

Carefully read the Apple TIL article. It says it cannot write to high speed media. It says nothing about the write speed of the CD-RW drive being limited to 4X. You should be able to write at 8X to 4X-rated media.

    8x on 4x media

No, you should not be able to write at 8x to 4x-rated media. Don't ask me why exactly but from what I understand and have witnessed, the media itself has the rating built-in...encoded or something, so that it is NOT possible to write to it at a higher speed. The whole idea behind specific speed-rated media is that that is the fastest at which the media can be written to without damaging the data and/or disc. In other words, do not attempt to write to a 4x disc at 8x speeds unless you want another coaster or frisbee. If the drive is rated for 12x writes then buy some 12x media, its cheap enough nowadays...Apples TIL is just a WARNING remember, not an order :P

    Speed

I have burnt at 12x to 4x Imation media with zero problems using my Plexwriter. The Sony drive is the problem in the new G4's.

    There is NOTHING wrong!!

This is NON issue! Apple NEVER said these were 12x10x32x drive or worse yet 16x10x40x. They ARE 8x (CD-R write speed) 4x (CD-RW write speed) 32x (CD-r/CD-RW read speed.) This TIL article is in response to idiots who keep complaining to Apple that ther 12x/16x CD-R or there 8x/10x CD-RW won't work. If they read the specs on the unit they would have known that the drive was 8x4x32x or just called Apple before they placed there order. I called Apple the day after the product announcemnt to confirm the specs I already knew to be true.

There is no problem to be corrected here, there will be no patch. If anything happens later this year faster drives quietly substituted for these 8x ones but if you make all kinds of noise about your own fault of not checking for the proper info then your just bad mouthing the product you supposedly love.

As for the point of of not being able to write 8x on a 4x disc I write 16x and 12x on 8x rated Traxdata CD-R media every single day or the week and I have never made a coaster. BUT CD-RW media is CLEARLY different and you usually can't write higher than rated on a CD-RW.

Sorry for the tirade but I like people to have the facts straight BEFORE they jump to conclusions.

    It says CD-RW not CD-R

The apple page says that Writing to CD-RWs is limited to 4X. It doesn't say that CD-Rs can't burn at 8X. My understanding is that it is the Sony 8x4x32 CR140E-something drive. Sounds fine to me... I have this drive in a Firewire chassis and its fine.

    I actually own one...

I have a new G4 533 w/ the Sony burner 8x4x32 and it CAN NOT burn at 8 times. I've tried burning w/ Toast 4.12 and Toast Ti (beta), on several brands of CD-R, and because this drive doesn't support buffer overun protection it makes coasters every time. & if you burn off the desktop w/ apples new system software it definatly is not burning at 8x. it takes forever...

That could be what apple's article is hinting at...??

    8x for CDs, not CDRW

    Please read the TILs carefully.

About CD-RW (#58785): "The CD-RW drive in your computer cannot write to High Speed CD-RW discs (4x to 10x speed)".

About the burner in general (#58770):
    "CD-RW Media Capabilities:
    CD-R ... Write 8x
    CD-RW ... Write 4x
    CD-ROM ... Read 32x"
