OpenDarwin to shut down
Mac OS X development and community site OpenDarwin today announced it will cease operations. Launched almost four years ago, the community-driven site was originally created with the goal of providing a development environment for building and developing Mac OS X sources as well as developing a standalone Darwin OS derivative, according to a post on the website. "OpenDarwin was meant to be a development community and a proving ground for fixes and features for Mac OS X and Darwin, which could be picked up by Apple for inclusion in the canonical sources," the statement posted on Tuesday reads. "OpenDarwin has failed to achieve its goals in 4 years of operation, and moves further from achieving these goals as time goes on. For this reason, OpenDarwin will be shutting down."
The site fostered the development of Darwinports, last updated in June of 2006, which offered an easy way to install various open-source software products on Darwin-based OSes, including OpenDarwin, Mac OS X and Darwin. It provided hosting, development, and other services for many different open-source projects for Mac OS X. The site hopes to provide a seamless transition for all projects to their new homes and said it "will be operating the machines as usual" for several months, until all projects are successfully transitioned off.
