Apple begins shipping Power Mac G4/733

updated 04:20 pm EST, Mon February 19, 2001

Apple has begun shipping in limited quantities the high-end 733 MHz Power Mac G4 with SuperDrive. The press release notes immediate availability of the system from the Apple Store, although orders placed today carry a 4-6 week estimated ship time for $3,500 system. There's no word yet on whether 667 MHz systems have begun shipping as well.

    Uh....

Not to be picky, but where does it say that the quantities are limited?

Granted, that may be a reasonable assumption, but if there is more backup to macnn's belief as to the quantity of units that are shipping, I'd like to see it.

    If you think...

...Apple filled ALL the pre-orders today, you're naive. Of course it's only shipping in limited quantities, just like the PowerBook G4 still is.

Until there is extra supply in the channel (i.e. more supply than demand) it is always limited.

    4-6 weeks is limited

like the other guy said, if apple is not shipping new orders for 4-6 weeks, quantity is limited. if they were, they would be shipping in a day or two.

    Agreed

I agree, but as someone who has a 733 on order, I'm curious about what "limited" means, since it's not in the press release.

Does it mean that they are beginning to ship in quantity, or does it mean they shipped two units so that Steve can say "733s are shipping!" in Tokyo.

    SHIPPING NOW...but...

Will take approx. 4 weeks to chip.

You're all dumb to put up with this S***. Apple shouldn't announce products that are going to ship 3 months later. I know they had to announce it or everyone would be at their throats for only having a 33MHz increase since September 1999.

But fahk! This is the most ridiculous garbage. Motorola has to slip out...they can't keep doing this to Apple. I don't care if Apple fuct them over in the license deal. And I don't care if Apple will get sued for breaching the Moto contract. I think it's time that IBM takes over. And if IBM can't do anything about it soon? Apple will have to bite the bullet and switch to AMD (once apps have been properly cocoa-ized of course).

s**** carbon, s**** classic. Long live MacOS X...even if it's on a x86 (shudder) architecture.

    this is retarded...

Once Apple actually ships their "latest and greatest" cool products, it's old news! They did that with the original G4 (took several months for them to supply the channels, then they completely discontinued their 500 MHz model after Motorolla couldn't produce the chips). What's with putting a product up for sale, when they can't even supply it?

... it's like buying a 2003 Dodge in advance. Who wants to pay a premium price for that?!

    MHz isn't the issue

my 500 MHz G3 powerbook is fast enough for almost anything I need to do on a Mac. What concerns me is the continued silence from both Motorola and Apple about the reasons behind the lack of MHz increase. Even a simple acknowledgement of the problem would suffice. Instead, both parties maintain silence and leave us consumers out in the dark. Bad.

Damned if they do. . .

Apple really cannot win this war. If they keep products in development out of the rumor columns to give themselves flexability, they are blasted for being secretive and "closed." If they announce a product and state it has components that will limit supply, they are blasted for not delivering product. Note that the moto 7450's are not the only limited supply component here; the pana drives are scarce as well. If you need a new Mac there are Macs you can order today and have tomorrow -- just not this one. Get over it. In two months you will be able to buy all of the 733s you can afford.

Again, if Apple only designs to the most common denominator, they will produce odules of products with mediocare feature sets. I don't want that nor do I expect that of Apple. If you do, you really need to buy machines from another manufacturer.
