BTO PowerBook G4s begin shipping

updated 10:00 am EST, Mon February 19, 2001

After having been delayed, build-to-order PowerBook G4 orders have begun shipping, as MacNN readers note in our forums. Several readers, however, continue to report that their standard configuration orders placed at the Apple Store during the first few days of availability have yet to ship, some five to six weeks since they were quoted a three week ship time.

    What readers?

I just read through the messages posted to the forum linked to above, but I did not see anyone saying anything about not getting their standard config order yet. All I saw were postings from people who have not gotten their build-to-order configs.

Everyone that I know who ordered a standard config in the first week has already received their Powerbooks.

    BTO, why?

I ordered my G4 Ti standard configuration on Jan the 24th, it took about twenty days to get it. That's because I knew how long it would take Apple for a BTO system. Also, I purchased 256 megs of memory for 99$, 1/4 of what apple charges. I then installed my Airport card myself ( no small feat ) Now I have a truely rocking laptop in about have the time and with a lot less money then the BTO guys. Some times common sense goes a long way.

The moral of this story kiddies:

BTO from Apple only when they have something to offer that you can't get elsewhere. Otherwise, you'll be wating Ad Infinitum...

    BTO a good DVD drive

With all the news about DVD drives with bad eject mechanisms, I would recommend build to order a new DVD drive before it leaves the shop. See if the Apple Store accepts that. Remember if the mechanism is broke in the first place, you might as well have them fix it before it goes out shipping rather than have to return it the first day you get it! One can only hope! I am not getting mine for a year, by then hopefully all the DVD drives will be fixed.

    DVD

By the way, when it would be a good time to get a PowerBook G4 ? I'm dying to get one but I'm scared by the DVD drive thing, how long before it becomes "safe" to get a PB B4 ?
    Thanks.

    Developr in Calgary

Well, as far as getting a TiBook for developers in Canada, there's no word from Apple or their distributor, EMJ Data Systems on when to expect one. I ordered two of them just minutes after they were announced. There's no inventory as of this morning, and no ETA either. Ugh!
