Tech: MS smart phone, VC funding, more...

updated 09:00 am EST, Mon February 19, 2001

Morning tech news: Microsoft today revealed its mobile smart phone platform, code-named Stinger, but has failed to sign on any major mobile-phone makers to use the system; Macromedia has released Flash Player 5 for Linux and Solaris, while announcing a version for Pocket PCs; Intel has upped the core voltage of the Pentium 4 to accomodate a 200 MHz speed bump expected to arrive in April; Loews Cineplex has filed for bankruptcy and has agreed to be bought out; and venture capitalists have severely reduced financing, signaling that the stock market meltdown of nearly one year ago will continue into the forseeable future.

    Microsoft failing?

"Morning tech news: Microsoft today revealed its mobile smart phone platform, code-named
Stinger, but has failed to sign on any major mobile-phone makers to use the system." Wow! Now why is there no comment here? Did they sting themselves? I thought they had enough marketing power to buy Corel, but here they can't even get anyone to buy their own system? Is this a sign of things to come? Microsoft has never failed at anything before (except originality). Cool XP be the next bust?

    Loews Cineplex?

They practically own all of the movie theatres in the Washington DC area....now we will be left with maybe two United Artist theatres if we don't get a buyer. That would be a darn shame, since there are literaly hundreds of Cinemaplex screens in this area. What's more Baltimore may only have two downtown theatres outside the colleges and universities. Is DC going to become another Baltimore?
