If PCs were cars, "the Mac would be a Lexus

updated 04:25 pm EST, Sat February 17, 2001

In his final farewell column, eWeek editor John Dodge admits that he bought an iMac last fall as promised: "Yes, I did buy the Mac as promised last fall, and it's lived up to my expectations. If computers were cars, the Mac would be a Lexus for its reliability and elegance. The PC? An AMC Gremlin." (Dodge will become editor-in-chief of ZCast.tv, a new streaming video service from ZD.)

    Lexus???

If an iMac were a car it wouldn't be a Lexus, since Lexus' designs are mostly copies of Mercedes or other European brands.

    The above comment

If you're going to make a comment that others will read, perhaps it should be an intelligent one? OK, I've set the bar a bit high for you, perhaps you should shoot for simply relevant.

    Lexus suggest luxury

Lexus suggests luxury, and high price. As long as Macs are compared with Lexus, Acuras, Chrystler and other high priced cars, people will be afraid to get them because they fear it is expensive. At $800 the iMac is quite a bargain if you ask me, and there are iMac DVs with DVD you can get for $1000. That is not a Lexus. A Corolla maybe. If you want a Lexus, try buying an SGI Indy or a Sun Sparcstation. If you want a Lamborghini, get a Cray or a Pixar.

    PC's are ?

If we're going down the car analogy route, PC's would be kit car versions of Yugo's or Ford Escorts (cheapest possible components and you have to build it yourself), while Macs would be Alpha Romeo (daring design), FIAT (clever design, reliabilty and affordability with Ferari input) and Mercedes/BMW (good build quality and expensive looking design).

    my car analogy

Macintoshes are Volkswagens. They're innovative, reliable, cheaper then they look, yet different. (they've also had minor money problem stemming from sales and poor products in the early 90's just like Apple). Everyone knows what a New Beetle looks like, just like everyone knows what an iMac looks like.

PCs on the other hand are run of the mill econoboxes. They're extremly poorly built, no particular one is the same, and they're never innovative, they only copy things from other manufacturers once they become standard. Sure, there is a few luxury versions of the econoboxes, but it's like putting leather in a Yugo, underneath the hood, it's still a piece of junk.

This is going to be fun

The other topic people get touchy about - their cars...

The E-One is really a better "Lexus" because it is a PC trying to look like a Mac, just like a Lexus is a Camry or Avalon trying to look like a REAL high-end car minus a real identity. Lexus is overpriced for a Camry with dead cow skin and a "fancy" badge. Ditto for Infiniti. Check out the badge reengineering article on Edmunds.com

I think BMW is the best comparison, because of the "ultimate driving machine" concept. The driver, just like the Mac user, are in a utopia of excellence for control and power. Those who have used one (Mac or BMW) really understand that there is no comparison. Onlookers always have their skeptical comments. Mercedes missed the top spot for the comparison because it has been the choice of conservatives and Macs are not.

VW - yes, it's upstart and there are good analogies but from personal experience sometimes I wonder if this represents the limitations of the original iMac - the lousy mouse, the underpowered speakers, etc. Innovative and uniquely stylish but often cutting back the function for form.
