Designer buttons needed for freeware app

updated 08:15 pm EST, Fri February 16, 2001

Micah Lanier is soliciting help in developing various designer button plug-ins for his freeware application ButtonMaker. Version 2.1 is due to be posted next week, but does not include any pre-designed buttons: "...because of the removal of Aqua, Platinum, Openstep, and Hi-Tech at Apple's request. I've also decided to also remove BeOS and IE buttons in order to avoid future trademark issues."

Oh, really- Now no one can even make even a freeware app that makes any Mac OS button images?!

C'mon- When we use those buttons all we're doing is paying tribute to the Mac GUI look.

What would Apple then say about websites like http://www.appleturns.com/?- In fact, Apple knows about it and gave it a five star rating on iReview. Go figure.

    Ridiculous

It was a button making app, not a full blown Aqua construction tool.

I doubt very much that Apple can have any legal claim on the button design. Both the shape and use were quite widespread before Aqua came out. All Apple did was make them transluscent and use cetain color schemes.

Aqua as a 'whole' is one thing, a button with a certain 'look' is another.

Apple has gone too far on this one.

It seems I have a piece of hard to get software now.

    Yup

It's possible that they were actually objecting to the names of the schemes and not the mere look of a button. The same button designs with cunningly different names might be fine. Unfortunately legal departments (including and especially Apple's) like to send letters that are as vague and nonspecifically threatening as possible, so they don't have to defend an actual position.

Every one of these legal threats from Apple Legal against their fans (or other small fry) makes it less likely that I, or anyone I know and advise, will buy a Mac in future.

    Slight correction

There may have been some confusion based upon what I said in my letter to MacNN regarding this, but ButtonMaker does have pre-designed buttons in a literal sense. There are 4 general designs that took just a little effort to make, and then there are 4 aqua look-alikes that people may enjoy. They look like aqua at first, but then when compared to Aqua side-by-side, they don't seem as aqua-ish.
