Micrsoft posted updates to TrueType Web fonts

updated 06:25 pm EST, Fri February 16, 2001

Nik Stanosheck notes that Microsoft’s MacTopia Website has posted 2 fonts that have been updated: "They are Arial and Times New Roman. Mac OS 9.1 comes with version 2.6 of these fonts, but these new updates from MS are version 2.9. I figured a number of your users would want to know that. You may wish to remind them that the only way to update your fonts is by starting up from another disk other than the disk your Fonts are stored on, since they are otherwise always in use by the OS." [Arial, Times New Roman]

    Updating fonts

Actually you can update these fonts by moving the current fonts out of your Fonts folder to the trash, copying the new fonts to the Fonts folder and restarting.

    Really?

I tried that and it said that I couldn't move them, as they are already in use. I only had the Finder running too. Nik's start from a CD-ROM idea worked for me.

    Updating with same system

You can update without needing to restart into another system from another disk. You must have all applications closed though. When that's done you can drag any font to the trash, put in the new fonts. To Empty the trash of the other fonts, all it requires is a reboot.

    Updating - easier yet

You can do this (at least up to 9.04) without quitting anything. Do this by dragging the font folder out of the system folder. it will then become "unblessed" and you can move the fonts around as much as you like. Make a new font folder in the system folder, and drag any old fonts you wish to keep and any new ones you would like to install into that. Trash the old folder (yout still must restart before the trash empties, though). BE AWARE THAT removing a font in use by an application will most likely crash that app - so be sure to either keep or replace fonts that you believe are in use.

    What's the difference?

Really, though... what's the difference between the 2.9 version of the fonts and the 2.6?

    yeah, whats the diff?

And why should Microsoft be updating fonts anyway? Isn't that creepy? Doesn't it trouble anyone else but me? I'd really like to know what they have done to them.

    Ooh, updated Arial

I substitute Helvetica and Times New Roman PS for these anyway. As I am sure many of you know, TrueType is a bane for hi rez output. I'd been getting away with it until recently... so no more TT where possible.

I agree with the poster who's suspiscious of MS updating fonts. Maybe they just added the Euro?

    Re: What's the differenc

    From the Microsoft's MacTopia website:

"New Apple Macintosh versions of Times New Roman (2.90) and Arial (2.90) This update includes a fix for a problem that prevented certain characters from being printed on PostScript level 3 printers."
