Apple offers free Nanos
Apple is offering college students a $179 rebate good toward any qualifying iPod when they buy a new MacBook, MacBook Pro, iMac, or Power Mac G5 system. The offer is available from any participating Apple Authorized Campus Reseller from today through September 16th, 2006. Students will receive a mail-in rebate for up to $179, which can effectively pay for a 1GB iPod nano. The company is touting its Macs as "the perfect college companion," reminding consumers that its Macs can run Microsoft Office and allow users to video chat or build a blog. Additionally, students can use their education discount to save even more when purchasing Macs and iPods.

This will be a great back to school selling tool for Apple. This will also drive more sales to participating campus resellers and will help us Campus Reps out a lot!

it's a 2gb nano actually

The news posting is incorrect. Since they want you to order the iPod with the new mac to get the discount, you can get the 2gb nano for $179 (after student discount).

free for students?

The $179 rebate applies to the 2GB nano and up -- the non-edu price at the Apple Store is $199 for a 2GB nano, so I'm guessing the rebate covers the educational price?
Buy a mac laptop, get $179 off the price of a new ipod. What's not to like?

The fact that Apple puts on these education only promotions, and do not allow us regular resellers to participate, and it costs us sales after we have spent copious amounts of time with these students doing Apple's job for them. In addition to that, who do they then bring their broken iPods to (even though we can't service them). Oh yeah, and who provides free tech support when they are having problems with their computers?? We do, so come on Apple get off your a** and quit stealing sales from your own independant resellers.

I used to work for an Authorized Apple Reseller, until we went under from razor thin margins on hardware sales. We were constantly competing against Apple. In the past few years it has become apparent Apple is slowly forcing the reseller out of the picture. Whether it is through discounts like this, only available when purchasing directly from Apple, or tight supply of new productions, especially during the holiday season, it is painful real that Apple wants all the sales for themselves. Think about it, the retail stores are now in pretty much ever city in the country with a population of half a million of more. Once this is done, there is no need for the reseller. Buyers can no see a Mac in person, and also have it fixed there, why does the reseller need to still exist?

college students, faculty and staff qualify for the back to school apple promotion. also k12 teachers. the macnn article only says students...
only education resellers sell at education prices. if i were a student, i wouldn't want to pay full price if i could get an education discount. my two cents...
no offense to independent resellers, but if you are a student, faculty or staff, you get education discounts through a campus reseller or from apple via online or retail. either way, you don't have to pay full price so you'd be wise to go with the edu discount option.

we get students and teachers coming in all the time, talking to us for hours (because unlike industry professionals and regular people) this group likes to know everything about everything, and have their hands held through everything they do, so they end up asking a million questions before making a purchase and expect free after sales support. They dont seem to recognize that our time is worth something and maybe that's why they should pay the extra hundred dollars. That being said, there are some students and teachers that have bought from me because of my knowledge and willingness to support them after the fact

I appreciate the reseller

I appreciate the resellers and I know that such thin margins are a constant headache even if you get a lot of traffic thru the door. In Portland, Ore we now have 3 Apple stores, but the resellers are still doing well and the Portland State Univ. sells accessories and such.
I DO make sure I buy everything at the resellers though (mice, bags, powersupplies, etc.), unless I have an Apple gift card, and I go to the Apple stores for the free tech help. So in a way many of us do the exact opposite of what you may think. Apple stores get the boutique crowd and resellers get the real crowd. I think resellers have to start looking at making bundles and doing enterprise pc setups and support and carve out new niches. Then just make sure you have better variety of periferals than what makes it on to the shelves of Apple Stores and you'll grow a reliable, loyal base.
Apple still should be bending over backward to make the resellers happy and I don't get why they seem to create their own problems for no real reason!#?%&*
