SmartDisk has lowered its prices by $40 to $100 on VST ultra-thin FireWire and FireWire/USB Combo Hard Drives as well as lowered the price on its portable 120GB RAID FireWire Tower drive by $1,000. We have pricing and other info on future products...

SmartDisk is also now shipping its FireWire, bus-powered portable CD-R/RW. The 4x/4x/20x drive has a 2MB buffer, weighs about 16 ounces, and is $400. It is available from distributors and the online store. SmartDisk is also finalizing production of a dual Titanium-style Battery Charger which will be bundled with an AC adapter and a Ti battery. Batteries reportedly are currently testing at a 52-watt-hr, just slightly better than Apple's 50-watt-hour rated batteries. The bundle is expected to be available in March.

    how about just the cases?

I've got 2 10 gig 2.5 inch powerbook drives left over from other upgrades that I would LOVE to put into one of these usb/firewire cases, unfortunately they dont sell the empty case. I'm not likely to buy another 10 gig just to get the case.

How about selling your cases empty as well!

I recently purchased a 'pocket pup' case from www.electricdeals.com but it's a little larger than the VST case and I would like to have the USB interface as well.

Thats around $150 that you could have had if you would just sell me an empty case!

    cases only

I don' think it's that easy. The VST cases are put right onto the drive and are unopenable. There are others (FireWire depot) that are selling the cases straight up.

    external drive kit, $98

You might want to check out the AverKit 2.5" 1394. It's a similarly-sized enclosure for any 2.5" IDE drive, and works with both Macs and PCs. Buy.com has it listed for $98 right now, at: http://www.us.buy.com/retail/product.asp?sku=10259253

    FireWire cases

Check out FireWire Depot . They sell several different FireWire cases. ClubMac also sells a FireWire case (which I'm currently using with a 45G IBM DeskStor drive).

    2.5" HD case

Firewiredirect has the Spark HD case for $100. It includes the power adapter and cable. I have one on order.

    watt hours

Is there some conversion of watt-hours to usable time that one can use? I'm guessing it's about 100 w-h/hour for the TiBook since Apple has a 50 watt-hour battery and claims 5 hours of use (though 3.5 sounds more realistic...still very commendable). Anyway, just wonderin' if such a calculation exists, or if it's really too computer-specific to generalize.

    2.5" Firewire Drives

Just a word of caution. If you are planing on using the drive for DV editing, the 2.5" drives in a Firewire conversion kit probably won't work due to the slow bridge speed converting between Firewire and IDE. I have a 7200 rpm drive in a 3.5 case, and the bridge effectively cut the performance in half, making it on par with with my internal 5400s. Since most (if not all) 2.5" drives are 4200 rpm, any performance degredation will probably render them useless for real-time playback of a DV stream. (3.7 MB/sec).

    VST Cases

If you want a VST case for your 2.5 10gb drives, then buy their 3GB Firewire drive for $149.95 and replace the 3GB with your 10GB. You could probably sell the 3GB drive to someone for $25-$50. If you really need a FW/USB combo chech out :

    It's almost a small for $179.95

    VST Zip drives....

Hmmm, I was kinda hoping for cheaper FireWire Zip100MB Drives. Also, I wasn't sure but I asume that these FW Zip drives are bus powered right? -- meaning you don't have to lug around an AC Adapter w/ your PowerBook just to use the drive?
