New MacBook laptop

Apple today unveiled the newly designed MacBook, its new consumer notebook featuring the Intel Core Duo processor and a new 13-inch glossy widescreen display. Apple says the new sleek design is up to five times faster than the iBook and up to four times faster than the 12-inch PowerBook. Together with the 15-and 17-inch MacBook Pros, the new MacBook, which starts at $1,099, completes Apple's Intel-based portables lineup and replaces both the iBook and the 12-inch PowerBook. Apple's line of portables now offers Intel Core Duo processors; a built-in iSight video camera for video conferencing on-the-go; Front Row media experience with Apple Remote; and several advanced features including DVI with dual display support, optical digital audio input and output, Gigabit Ethernet, Sudden Motion Sensor, Scrolling TrackPad and MagSafe Power Adapter. Three MacBook models are available--two white models for $1,099 (60GB/Combo) and $1,299 (60GB/SuperDrive) and a black model for $1,499 (80GB/SuperDrive).

"Apple began the transition to Intel Core Duo-based notebooks in February with the 15-inch MacBook Pro, and now just 90 days later we have completed the transition with the release of the all new MacBook," said Philip Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. "The complete MacBook lineup leads the industry with Apple's trademark innovative design and advanced mobile features -- from top to bottom it is the best notebook line that we have ever offered."

The MacBook lineup includes three models: a 1.83GHz and 2.0GHz MacBook in a newly designed, sleek white enclosure and a 2.0GHz MacBook in a new black enclosure. Apple says the new MacBook offers performance up to five times faster than the iBook and up to four times faster than the 12-inch PowerBook with a completely new system architecture including a 667MHz front-side bus and 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM memory expandable to 2GB.

The new MacBook portables are about one-inch thin and 20 percent thinner than the iBook; they feature a new 13-inch glossy widescreen display, which is 79 percent brighter than the iBook and the 12-inch PowerBook and 30 percent larger (1280x800): "the MacBook provides incredibly crisp images with richer colors, deeper blacks and significantly greater contrast."

Every new MacBook comes with a built-in iSight video camera for video conferencing on-the-go using Apple's iChat AV, or recording a video Podcast or iMovie using iLife '06. MacBook also includes Photo Booth, Apple's application that lets users take quick snapshots with the built-in iSight video camera, add entertaining visual effects and share their pictures with the touch of a button.

    First to report

It's about time you guys reported this. Apple's site was updated some time ago but you guys seem to be the first to report this. Good job!

    Glosst screen, I wonder?

Are we in for reflections as in the old CRT screens? I am very curious to see one of these in person. Looks like a good deal and my guess is the bottom machine will come down $999 in the fall.

    $200 for a black case?

I think they are crazy to be charging an extra $200 for an extra 20 gigs of storage and a black case. Seems like a blatant grab for our cash.

    Yikes

Another built-in Intel graphics display card? Hmm, while my Mini works just fine, it certainly does mean no games on a Macbook - so for students? A win?

Glossy screen? I thought these were evil to colours? If they're good (and a clear selling point), why doesn't the Pro have one? Hmm, another win or not?

    No product line for me

It looks like Apple just designed themselves out of the product line I'm in the market for: the small but powerful notebook. I was looking forward to replacing my 12" Powerbook with a MacBook Pro of approximately the same size. Although it is taking me time to come around on this issue, I can see why so many people want to run OSX on "generic" Intel boxes. Since Apple has stopped producing the hardware I want, I would prefer to purchase a nice (Sony) laptop with the size and features I *do* want, and then run OSX on it instead of Windows.

    ugh integrated graphics

Why the h*** does Apple feel the need to castrate all of their consumer machines with integrated graphics!?!? We finally get hardware which can run Windows for gaming and they take away the real graphics cards. I was ready to upgrade from my iBook G4, but I will keep waiting in hopes that they return to their senses and put a decent video card back in these machines.

    Glossy screens, no!

P.S. I also don't like glossy screens. You can see them on many of the Windows laptops at any computer store, and they have too much reflection for my taste. Some people claim to love them because they are slightly "crisper", but I find the reflections distracting.

    Five Pounds?!

WTF - 5.2 pounds??! What are they thinking?!

This is a pound heavier than the G4 12" PowerBook. I thought the whole idea behind switching to Intel was to conserve size and power.

This is a major disappointment, and won't sell so well here in Japan where people predominantly use public transportation and actually have to CARRY their laptops.

    lid closed operation?

Can any one tell if this will work with the lid closed? The Pro and Power Book models will, but iBooks could not.

    Pretty decent machines

You whiny babies. Re-read the specs, and what is offered now. These are decent machines for the money. If you want to buy a PC - BUY A PC. These are pretty sweet machines that runs the reason people buy Macs - Mac OS X, and at a clip - Windows. Oh, I forgot - you want a 1 lb. laptop with twice the resolution that's 1/2 inch think and will run 24 hours on a single charge. Gotta love what Gateway offers you.
