Several readers have forwarded company emails about an upcoming Mac version of :CRQ software, which can be used to find quickly locate relevant product information on the Web from television ads (as well other print media via the CueCat reader): "Digital:Convergence Corporation has been hard at work developing a version of :CRQ software for the Macintosh. We are completing an internal alpha test of the software and are preparing for a beta test. The beta test will include a fully functional pre-release version of the :CRQ for Macintosh software.... The beta test will conclude at the end of March 2001." Interested users can sign up on the :CRQ Beta Website.

Watch out for :CRQ!
I installed it on a PC at work under a pseudonym. They wanted all kinds of personal information, and the process took about 25 minutes.
We goofed around for a while scanning every barcode we could find around the office. Most of them worked.
As I understand it, some of your personal information is transmitted back to them every time you swipe a barcode, whether it be in a magazine or the UPC on a soda can.
While they state that the info cannot be traced directly to you in the process, I hate the Big Brother/Channel 13 (or is it 21?) overtones.
Now, if I just knew enough programming to connect the scanner to my Palm....
