Aspyr Media has announced that it has acquired the rights to publish American McGee's Alice for the Mac, a third-person 3D action/adventure game which uses the Quake III: Arena engine. The game will be ported to the Mac by Westlake Interactive after already successfully porting another Quake III-engine title, Star Trek: Voyager - Elite Force. "No release date for Alice has been set, but it should be a fairly quick development, given Quake III's excellent Mac version and Westlake's prior knowledge of the engine," notes Westlake's web site.

Alice is a twisted, wild game that Mac users will appreciate not only for its gameplay but also its stunning visuals. This is probably the most atmosphere-rich game ever made," says Michael Rogers, President of Aspyr.

Join Alice in her return trip to a twisted Wonderland, evilly altered by anger and dread. Confront the Queen of Hearts and her evil minions, including Ferocious Card Guards, Demonic Fire Imps, Ravenous Jabberspawn and more, who enforce her evil will. They're all mad! A fierce and nasty fight for sanity and control turns into a lethal struggle for survival.

Alice includes the most Devious Puzzles and Labyrinthine Mazes. Visit levels reminiscent of the Pool of Tears, the Caterpillar's Garden, the Mad Hatter's Tea Party and more. Familiar characters are mysteriously transformed. Witness an arsenal of the most mischievous toys ever imagined.

    :) :) :)

Oh happy days indeed. I've never been big on gaming, although I enjoy firing up Q3 here and there for a few quick matches. And oh, can't forget Warcraft II. But for the longest time, those were the only two I played. Now, Ive been able to add Oni (Which, btw, is hands down the best game I think I've ever played...not counting Mario Kart 64) and very soon now, Alice. I can't wait. I've been lusting after this game ever since my brother pointed it out to me. Can't wait to tell him it'll be coming to the mac. ^_^

    This game RULES

I've played this game on my friend's PC, and it is absolutely unbelievable! I can't wait to get it. I really hope those pessimistic losers (you know who you are) don't start complaining about how this is already out on PC, and it will be outdated when it comes out for mac, and on and on, god I can't stand that! This game is sensational, and it still will be whenever it gets released. Oh rapture, oh joy, Alice for mac!!!

    OMFG!!!!

Thank god for Westlake! I've e-mailed them about pursuing "Alice" and now it comes true!!! They do listen to their customers. Now if we can get "Return to Wolfenstein" too. I'll be in heaven (either way).

    90% dross

Great, another port of a derivative, boring, playability-free Windows game from an overhyped, untalented developer. Add it to the pile with SiN, Rune, Elite Force, FAKK2 and the rest of the c*** out there. Can't wait until I can fire up Daikatana on my Mac. Yippee.

The Mac game market is beginning to look a lot like the smelly end of the PC market; where before we had a few good games, now we have a lot of lousy ones - and the few decent games there are still seem to elude any porting attempts. Half-life, anyone? Thief? Worms Armageddon?

At least we were spared MDK2. Maybe Giants and Sacrifice will help us out of this hole one day, but there'll be a lot more shiny packages with nothing inside before then.

    Gripe addendum

The same main page today also mentions Escape from Monkey Island, a truly lame adventure game on the PC. Why not Grim Fandango?

Lest you imagine I'm complaining without purpose, I do happen to think that Aspyr & Westlake comprise a very smart, talented group of people, and I admire their past work a great deal. The same can be said for many of the other Mac porters. The question is, why do they seem to pick the crappiest games to port? Is it simply out of their hands? Or a fear of "old game syndrome" (even though these older games are also proven successes)? I'd be genuinely interested in the answer to that one.

    It'll be worth the wait.

As an avid Mac user, I've only just entered into the gaming scene. I borrowed a PC from work so I could play some of the PC games that caught my interest, some of these games I later bought for the Mac when they came out. I have to say, each and every one of them has been better for the Mac than its PC counterpart.

Pod Racer, Deus Ex, and Diablo II are all examples. The graphics are smoother, better rendered and games seem to behave better. Who cares if us Mac users have to wait a few more months to get the cool games our disillusioned PC friends get right away? The quality is always superior.

I considered purchasing (or building) a PC so I could play Alice, but with this news of Westlake and Aspyr porting it to the Mac, I'll not clutter my apartment with such a doorstop and wait for the undoubtedly superior Mac version.

    Lame?

"The same main page today also mentions Escape from Monkey Island, a truly lame adventure game on the PC. Why not Grim Fandango?"

Dude, you are seriously f*cked up in the head. You may not like adventure games, but lots of people do...and no adventure games has a bigger following than the Monkey Island series.

Just because you don't like Monty Python doesn't mean that nobody does...
