Apple may attend MacExpo in November

Apple is reportedly "actively considering" attending the UK-based MacExpo in late November of this year, following "four years of abandoning Britain in favour of either US announcements or European exhibitions." The event organizer reportedly has had discussions with Apple US and European personnel, as well as meetings with new Apple UK management.

    UK Show

I think that's great news if it's true. It's been away a long time now and I think that if advertised well and held at the correct venue then that alone will generate some interest from people who don't usually consider Apple when buying a computer. November's a particularly good time as it will be in the run up to Christmas.....It's also nice to hear that there are new people running Apple in the UK . For too long we've put up with service that stinks and poor advertising.

    The general consensus ..

    among UK Mac Users is...

"We couldn't give a toss about AppleExpo".

Following the debacle over the last few years (on/off/off/on/off again - who cares), can you blame us?

There is at least one independent Apple show in the UK today. Last year's was extremely well attended and 2001 should be even better.

There is even a Mac specialist in Birmingham, West Midlands (not Alabama!) who is organising a show of his own - thanks Will!

We do not need a keynote from Mr J to make a sucessful event - we can do quite nicely ourselves.

    Brilliant!

It would be great to have a proper Apple supported trade show in the UK. Paris has one, so why cant the UK? Just make it Birmingham so it is accesible from the whole of the UK. Hopefully it would pick up sales & Macs in UK higher education. In my experience there are lots of older Macs in universities that are due for replacement. Unfortunately IT buyers tend not to replace them with new Macs.

    Why bother

After all the UK is an insignificant market compared to mainland europe, the british don't even consider themselves to be European. If Apple has limited resouces for trade shows (which it appears to) then Paris would seem a better bet. After all, who in their right mind would want to go to London (or worse, Birmingham where you can't even understand the bizarre accent) in NOVEMBER.

    Speak for yourself....

Thanks to the un-named reader who took it upon themselves to just tar one nation of people with a whole brush; Many Europeans don't consider themselves to be "European" either. It's a continent - Not a nationality and anyone who works with people from different European countries will tell you that we are not all the same any more than someone from NYC is "the same" someone from Nashville.

Perhaps you also forgot that Paris in November isn't exactly scorching hot either (last time the show floor was flooded out the night before the show started). After having visited the Paris show and knowing a number of people from other European countries that visited too, it was apparent that for a show which was supposed to serve the whole of Europe, there was not a lot of English being spoken, thus excluding many people from enjoying it to the full (like it or not the common language that most Europeans understand is English and I'm not here to debate the rights and wrongs of that). I'll be the first to admit that Birmingham doesn't exactly have the same allure as Paris (no offence meant to those from Brum) but people go for the show and the NEC (as well as the NIA) all have plenty of know-how in that dept. Actually getting tanked up in Birmingham is actually a lot of fun too.....But that's another story.

I think the UK market for Apple is a very important one. It's the only European country to have English as a first language, London is the largest city in Europe, from what I recall the UK has the largest market penetration for Computers outside of the US (I'm sure someone will hasten to correct me if I'm wrong, and I may well be), it's one of the major financial capitals of the world and finally the current rampant consumerism and appetite for technology in the UK would mean that the show would be very well attended. There's plenty of reasons to hold it here. Besides all of this, Apple obviously thinks the UK is important enough to consider manufacturing a vast amount of their hardware here and I doubt whether they'd even be discussing having an Expo here if it wasn't worth their while.

Anyway, in short I think it'd be great to alternate the 2 expos between Paris and the UK. As far as the "general concencus being that we don't give a toss", how about qualifying that statement? I seem to recall that when it was announced that the last show was canned there was bloody uproar all over MacNN as well as elsewhere........

    UK Show

There is a very important point here whihc is missed by most you guys.

Apple decided in 1999 to cancel the UK show permentatnly, they catigorically said NO MORE shows in UK and Germany. If they hold talks to paricipate, means there is a very significant shift in corporate policy. i.e. they are making a U-turn on that policy which was rumoured to be from SJ himself.

    The real question is WHY?

Can an Apple insider tell us please?

    What Apple deserves

I just hope Apple is welcomed with a large collective "BOO!!"

Their treatment of their UK customers puts them in the position to deserve that. Their Expo debacles are intolerable!
