Freenet: anonymous, decentralized Web

updated 02:50 am EST, Wed February 14, 2001

The Freenet project is trying to create an anonymous, de-centralized, more efficient version of the World Wide Web, which can be easily accessed using MacFreenet, a Macintosh front-end to the Freenet Server:

"Unlike the Web, information on Freenet is not stored at fixed locations or subject to any kind of centralized control. Freenet is a single world-wide information store that stores, caches, and distributes the information based on demand. This allows Freenet to be more efficient at some functions than the Web, and also allows information to be published and read without fear of censorship because individual documents cannot be traced to their source or even to where they are physically stored."

    A real freeze?

    Does the mouse pointer freeze?

I'm asking this because one user once told me he had a freeze, but in fact it was not: after double clicking the MacFreenet icon, nothing (aparently) happens. This is because the Freenet server does not open any window - it just stays there, quietly running. To make sure it is runing, try to double click the "Freenet Gateway.url" icon. If your browser loads a page entitled "Freenet Gateway", everything is ok.

    My freeze...

No, it wasn't a mouse-freeze (ie, the cursor would move) however the white bar aross the top stayed white, as if it hadn't fully loaded. Basically I double-clicked the icon, then waited about 5 seconds while it loaded.. then.. It just sat there. I couldn't click anywhere and have it do anything. Couldn't get back to the finder. Had to force-quit freenet.

    Details:
    Powermac g3 bronze keyboard
    os 9.1
    latest java release from apple
192 MB ram w/virtual memory on to 250

Hope this helps somehow. Maybe no one else is having this problem (?)

    Re:Freeze

I also experienced what seemed to be a freeze but after waiting abou 20 or 30 seconds the server runs fine. (I clicked on the desktop because I thought it was a freeze as well, and nothing happened for a while, but then it was fine.)

So far I've had a hard time actually finding any content, though.
