Windows XP unveiled with new Luna look

Microsoft yesterday unveiled Windows XP, the next revision to its OS, which the company touted as the "most important" release since Windows 95. Windows XP features the Luna interface which "will offer customers a more streamlined Windows look. It retains the Windows Start button but makes Internet connectivity, e-mail access and interaction with system settings via the Control Panel more intuitive," however, ZDNet quotes one developer: "This is so sad. They're just lamely trying to copy Steve Jobs' Apple presentation--right down to the guy having a black shirt and black pants...It's almost like Windows ME 2. Or as Apple might call it, Windows Me Too."

Whister = OS Xp

Is it me or is Microsoft playing the name game?
It sounds to me like the new name of the Microsoft OS is trying to steal thunder from Mac OS X.
I know the Mac OS X is "ten" not "x" but haven't you all it as Mac OS "X"?
To the general public "Xp" sounds like an upgrade for "X". Am I wrong?
So why buy X when you can have Xp in the fall?

Windows Milenium Edition Second Edition or Windows Messy, It wouldn't work so they said hey lets rip off Apple's next generation operating system instead. Windows 2000 was supposed to be this huge opperating system advancement that everyone would use and no body is using it, so Xp will just be the next big thing nobody uses.

I nearly wet my shorts. Then I thought, "maybe it's at a low res to display the windows large enough to see." But it really doesn't matter. It's nasty.

Mac OS XP

Who needs microsoft anyway? Between mac os X coming out and Linux getting better and better, Windows OS is just in the middle of everything with no advantage that the 2 others have. Doesn't have the look and simplicity of Mac OS, doesn't have the power and stability of LINUX. What's easier to do? Coorect 4 billion bugs or re-vamp the interface? If furthermore, they can take a bit of glory out of Apple, all the best! Sheeesh. Bill should get a wedgie :) And i bet there is not enough similarities to sue him. they had so much trouble with justice lately that they must have been extremely careful about it. God, I hate them

This is really sad

This hole thing is really sad, the look so close to OS X, the trash on the right down side, the colors, the hole look of that Xp. I wonder what the designers and coders are thinking when they work on a projekt like that.
really sad - if I would be one of these MS workers I could not look into the mirror again...

New OS going FAST!!

is it me or does Microsoft pull a new OS so often that I must be the only one not keeping up with those things....

Our office runs a lot on W95... we began to switch to 98 this year.
No server are on W2K... we have no Windows ME computer... and here is the next one coming... too fast for most corporate clients!!!

What a joke.

Last time MS ripped off the Mac OS Apple were in such dire straits that they had to let them get away with it. This time they need to look at this new stuff and try again. That whole thing is a shabby, poorly exectuted rip off of OSX. It's not even good! While OSX brings in the most fluid looking interface ever designed (IMHO), XP looks like a Kaleidoscope scheme from 1998 gone wrong. It's outrageous. This shows us one thing; It's going to get even BETTER for Apple as more people start to see what MS is trying to do. They've lost the plot for good now.

They'll get away with it

Apple sue MS. Havent we been there before?
All that would happen is that M$ would threaten to pull Office and IE (which face it most of us use now), and that would be the end of OS X.

I'm afraid we are just going to have to get used to M$ ripping off Apple, since Apple has already sold its soul to MS (for $ 150m), and we're going to have to put up with our annoying PC lovin friends go on about how innovative and clever M$ are.

But at least we'll be using OS X and our lives WILL be better!

What's the deal with "Turn Off Kitchen Computer" (1st image), does this means that Windows XP PCs can shred cheese and grind meat ?
Thank God Apple doesn't think that much "different", specialy when it omes to kitchen computing. May be MS is pushing WinXP to be the digital hub of the......... kitchen.

Why are we so surprised?

Come on why all the shocked and outraged postings? Microsoft has been copying the Mac OS since its inception and getting away with it because they have more money than brains or ethics. The issue for Apple and its users is how do we get even with MS? Our individual outrage means nothing to MS.

The only way is to hurt Bill is hit him where it hurts and that�s to grow market awareness of Apple and the capabilities of its OS and H/W.

Blatant copying will then become more difficult even for thick skinned Microsoft.

I live in London (UK) and I recently overheard the following comments in a computer store: Apple is for DTP use only - You can�t run Office on a Mac - Apple only runs DOS!! (My god I nearly had a stroke) � I even heard a first time buyer being steered away from an iMac because she didn�t have the knowledge to counteract the ignorance of the salesperson.

People simply don�t know the fundamentals of what Apple is all about. There is a huge education job to do on the public before it changes its Microsoft centric view of computing.

OS X gives us the ammunition (at last) to hold our heads up and beat Xp point for point from every technical and users experience perspective.

If Apple doesn�t launch it�s biggest promotional activity ever to ram home the capabilities of OS X and it�s H/W (beyond eye candy) then quite frankly we�ll be here in two years complaining about the MS rip off of OS XI except that there be fewer of us and less opportunity to convince people that there is a logical and capable alternative.

I for one hope that Apple doesn�t waste this opportunity

I really liked the comment about Windows Xp looking like a Kaleidoscope scheme from 1998 gone wrong. That's exactly how I felt when I saw the screen shots on the MS website. Come on, people, what else could you expect from Microsoft ? Thank God it looks like something nobody would ever like to use.

Copied aqua? MS may have made Windows look smoother and less cluttered but it looks like a Toy Company designed the interface. At least with Apple's Aqua it looks "Business", "HiTech", and "User Friendly" at the same time. I would feel comfortable using Apple's interface in a business setting. There's a reason company's don't buy the lime green or orange Imac's and (Insert PC vendor here), but buy the blue, grey, or beige systems.

Whistler is better than X

Though I don't own a PC, I have been using both X and Whistler at work. Whistler is a better operating system due to a couple of key reasons.

1) It is built on a solid working foundation of Windows 2000 with SP2. You may laugh at this, but it is a very solid OS with limited crashes like Unix and it is has been shipping for well over a year now.

2) It actually has APIs that allow you to support hardware unlike Mac OS X that won't see these until AFTER 1.0 ships.

3) The quick user switching is amazing. Apple could learn a thing or two from this. All users are running simulataneously, so you can quickly get back to where you were with all apps open exactly where you were before you logged out to let you kids do their homework.

You can slam Whistler all you want, but I am think it is the future unlike X which will have a rocky road. Sad, but true.

Yellow Duck

Hello...Yellow Duck? That is a 100% rip off of Apple. When Multiple Users came out, every freekin screen shot had that yellow duck in it. That's an Apple thang, leave it alone. If that user login (what does MS call it, "Several Users"?) is not 90% stolen directly from Apple (and it's not even a new Apple idea...once again, Windoze is a couple of years behind), then I don't know what is. This is completely unfair of MS to copy so much from Apple. I just hope for their users' sake (including mine since I use their crappy OSes at work) that they can actually make their OS stable.

Wait, who I am kidding, of course they can't.

Clearly Microsoft wet it's pants when they saw that Mac OS X kicked a** and WILL ship next month. They've probably been bugging the h*** out of the MS Mac Business Unit hanging over their shoulders looking at the OS X beta seeds from Apple.

So what do they do to prop up their lame Whistler project and steal Apple's thunder? Fake screen shots, baby! Don't believe for a second that those are real. Obviously Bill sat down with a graphic designer and they came up with a few images. "Make sure to anti-alias everything... make the icons nice and big, etc."

I'm equally certain the programmers had zero input. They're probably seeing these screenshots for the first time, as we are. They're going, "How the f&*% are we gonna do THAT? On top of Windows? Has that guy lost his MIND?"

Notice MS doesn't mention HOW they're going to do this or when. Apple talks about a new imaging engine that borrows from postscript and uses the G4 to smooth things out. No way MS is rewriting their graphics engine.

Bottom line: it'll look worse, it will come out later, less features than promised, but by then the damage to OS X's buzz will be done. That's all MS wants with this.

Whistler is WORSE than X!

Have you heard about Microsoft's new licensing scheme for Windows XP?

You have to register the program with Microsoft or else the OS refuses to run after 50 reboots. Worse, is that the registration key you get is only good for two installations, after that, you have to call Microsoft and give them a "valid reason" why they should let you reinstall again... with the number of times some people legitimately reinstall their OS, Microsoft will start labeling them pirates... (the same will apply to Office XP too)

They may have been able to get away with this with Office 2000 in Europe, but people won't stand for it here in the USA...

Just wait... that alone would be enough to switch to Apple for MANY of my PC using friends...

While I agree...

With the dude who said that WinXP has a solid foundation (it does, Win2K is really very stable), the licensing scheme is very screwy (you have to re-activate the OS with your SN# every 50 days... talk about a PITA. And if you lose that SN#, you need to call up MS and give out personal info. to verify your info.) and still has that Windows look and feel.

So, while WinXP's success may perhaps be more secure than X (as far as copies sold; lots will upgrade automatically to it), X is far more exciting.

Fischer Price Interface

I remember before Windows 3.1 came out : some people were laughing at the Mac interface because it was so "Fischer Price". Microsoft would never do that, they said, they're mucho more serious than that.

Comes 2001. Now we can compare the Luna (MS) and the Aqua (Apple) interfaces. Look at both and tell me the feeling you have.
-The Aqua interface seems to be made of real components. It stands out of the screen. It has a pervasive feel of solidity and dependability.
- The Luna interface feels like a comic strip. It is flat. It feels like it is fake, like a cover-up preventing the user to access the real power of the computer.

I don't know for you, but in 2001, the Fischer Price interface changed side... (I would even say before this year, but in 2001 it becomes even more obvious.)

What a joke! I dont know wether to laugh or to start vomitting at the fact that probably many PC users are actually gonna think this cheap facelift LOOKS COOL.

It's also worrying that Apple probably wouldnt sue considering there current standing with MS. Shame though, in the news when they talked about the lawsuit they would be showing Xp and then X and people who dont know OSX already would see how much better it looks.

Aqua and "XP"

XP is more like Kaleidoscope (which we have have for 5 years) than Aqua. Note that XP STILL USES ICONS. Also, slow intel processors will not be able to handle the "genie" effect or transparency or anything CPU intensive.

As for the "XP" name-- well, MS likes the letter "X"-- look at the mostly-defunct OpenDoc rip-off, ActiveX, or the current OpenGL rip-off, DirectX. But X has almost implied UNIX since MIT invented the X Window GUI in the '80s. Thus "XP" IS misleading. The NT kernel is NOT in any way based on UNIX, unlike Mac OS X.--Tom Barta

To the XP beta testers

I have a question for the previous poster who uses XP: Is the "Start: menu really as gargantuan as it seems in one of the screen shots? It seems to take up almost 3/4 of the screen just to show you the same things the old Start menu did.

I mean if people complained about the size of the Dock, think about how it must be if 3/4ths of your work gets obscured when you want to find a file. Of course, I think we mac users are probably more sensitive to good UI than the average PC user...

Rather than images...

The ducks and magnifying glass and those other images are royalty-free ones available on any CD. I've got them somewhere on my PB from an old images CD. Apple doesn't own them. Get real.

The real issues are (1) is XP more stable than its predecessors? If it's built on NT, then likely yes; (2) can MS persuade people to shift to it? That's a harder one.

It may not be beautiful but it's a zillion times better than Windows is now in terms of looks. Windows now is plain ugly; I can't bear to use it.

If you like the look of X over the look of Classic, then Windows users like you will like the look of XP over W98 etc. They don't know that OSX exists, for the most part, nor what its underpinnings are. Apple won't sue - there's nothing to sue over.

Whistler *better* than X?

To the guy that claimed Whistler was better than X, think about it - did you really give us any reason:

It may be built on the Win2k kernel, but is that stable as BSD? Does it match BSD when there are a lot of processes running? Maybe, maybe not - so why did you even include it as a reason Whistler is better?

Hardware APIs - so what if they'll be released afterwards - once they're out it's a non-issue. So in two months from now, it'll be a non-issue.

As for the switch user thing - yes, that is a handy feature. I hope they plug all the security holes too. Let's think of who would use that feature? Mom wants to interrupt little Jane for a minute to check her email? Dad wants to check the sports score on a website? But how often does a second user need the entire environment open at the same time?

In OS X two users can run programs without logging one of them out. Open a terminal window, type "su mom" and start the email program from the terminal window. "su" too complex for mom, you say? How much work would it take for someone to write a little utility with a pretty face to do all that for you?

There's already a freeware application to do just that. I don't remember the name, but like you say, very simple to implement.

I have to say I'm still impressed by that one feature of XP, especially if it involves saving my session to disk for next time. However, can you imagine trying to upgrade some software on Windows when someone else is logged in using it?

Luna looks nothing like Mac OS X. The login screen is clearly a ripoff of Mac OS 9's, with the nice addition of convenient password placement.

The "Start" menu should send people in droves to other operating systems. Perhaps an Intel version of Mac OS X wouldn't be so bad (though I've never supported it before). It's certainly an opportunity for Apple to educate the masses about their options.

I am a PC user and I use Macs as well. I prefer PC, to me it is easier to use then a Mac.

The fact that the new OS looks a bit like OS X, big deal? Whats this big image with Macs anyway, if Apple wants to succeed they should drop this holier then thou attitude.

Also, OS X has to run on a Unix kernal, can't come up with there own idea eh?

Linux will not beat out Windows, and I don't think OS X will either. And by the way Windows ME and 2000 are pretty stable regardless of what most Mac people say

But first, I do like the idea of multiple users logged in at the same time. This probably builds on the NT multiple console feature (which has actually been around for a long time). It would be Apple to "borrow" this idea.

Microsoft has "borrowed" the notion of frameworks from the MacOS X runtime model.

With Windows XP, there's an infrastructure to support assemblies and isolated applications (both COM+ and Win32). A code change should not be required to get at side-by-side assemblies from Win32 applications. Applications can use the latest system assemblies without global impact.

In short, isolated applications are valuable because they are more reliable. They are built and shipped with all needed components and are not affected by changes that other applications make. Isolated applications use a manifest, which is an XML file containing information that self-describes an assembly or an application. All binding and activation metadata, such as COM classes, interfaces, and type libraries, is now stored in the manifest, rather than the registry. There are two types of manifest files: applications manifests, which describe isolated applications, and assembly manifests, which describe individual assemblies.

No one believes you use Macs. Don't lie to make your comments plausible.

Some of you may not be aware of this: if thinking about how Microsoft has ripped off Apple makes you blow an artery, then you don't want to ever spend any time on a NeXT machine (if you can find one). I can't believe he didn't go after Microsoft and try to beat them (business-wise). I sure don't understand Jobs. I mean, I really don't understand him at all. The products have NEVER been the problem for Apple... and yet that's all Apple focuses on(!). "Uh, Steve... there's something called marketing. And another thing called business. And here are some related words that you probably should look up: market share, stability, customer relations."

It seems like Steve Jobs is on a one-man mission to disprove the trueism: "Business is War". (And he hasn't made any progress.)

Man, if you just read the tech news headlines you get this image of everybody else (MS, Oracle, Gateway, etc) getting down to business, and Steve Jobs flighting around - drawing neat shapes, changing his mind, changing the company's strategy, changing the color of everything, changing his mind, having a great idea, losing interest in it, making a movie, drawing neat shapes, ...

Try it sometime - read the tech headlines for 1 - 4 weeks. It's hysterical; unless you love your Mac (as I do), then it's bad for your health.

It's pretty... stupid.

Yeah... the GUI looks great, much better than the previous WIndoze systems. But at the expense of Apple. I know it's been said over and over, but it can be said one more time: RIP-OFF! As in, "Windows *cough*mac*cough* XP"... this is just a great example of how Microsoft, once again, is jumping on the bandwagon of GUIs and simply trying to take away the spotlight on Apple. For a company who's so "humbled" they sure are back to their old ways. I don't mind an update for WIndows users, but for God's sake, BE ORIGINAL for once!!

Oh, and Credential Manager = KeyChain.

Yes, We Are Mac People...

I think most peoples' gripe is the fact the as innovative as Apple is, they get almost no credit, and all their good ideas get ripped off and mass marketed in the forms of other products and goods which sell like hot cakes. h***, everything these days is encased in semi-transparent colored plastic.

And you have to admit, it was in bad taste for Microsoft to use the duck in their multi-user set up...granted it was a royalty free image...they used it in the same context as Apple does, and it was very unprofessional. They're just mocking Apple.

Also...Luna, Aqua? I don't believe Microsoft has ever officially given a market name to an interface before now, after Apple came up with Aqua...clearly to take the bang out of OS X...imagine the curiosity this mysterious OS X with the Aqua interface might have generated. It would have had the perception of something brand new to the average consumer...the Aqua interface...wow, now it's going to sit next to Windows Xp with the new Luna interface...confuse the consumer and they'll stick with what they know..."Windows". So I do believe that Windows Xp and Luna are named so to take away from OS X, it's good marketing, but when you've already got such a huge markethare, why sink to such low marketing strategies, unless of course you feel threatened :)

...and so what if OS X uses a Unix kernal...Gates had to build his OS as an app that ran on top of an existing app-DOS.

Sure there's a few Mac folk that may have a slight holier-than-thou complex...I more or less just feel sorry for those poor souls who never had a fair chance to make up their own mind. Once you've been using an interface for a period of time, it's damn near impossible to switch unless forced to do so. The result is a subpar OS with a cumbersome GUI that is the standard.

But, for the most part, I think we're just tired of all of Apple's cool ideas being barrowed, and when we mention it, we all get accused of having attitudes, or griping, or hating Microsoft, or PC's or whatever...I do use what I like, and for the most part I do leave the other alone, until they tout "barrowed ideas" as innovation or something new and improved...that just irks me, and the sad thing is, the general public will eat it up as the gospel. Amen.

OSX on intel

The biggest point in all of this is that Apple, MUST, expand outside of itself! If OS X was to be ported to run on intel boxes, they could actually compete for the PC market. I would be more than happy to pay 129.00 for a new OS that works the way it should work, that doesn't crash every 5 hours, and would have the visiual effect of Aqua. I cannot however, as a student, spend the money to buy a new system. My wife has to run autocad for school, so we have to have a PC, but we would love to have OS x on it. I bet there are a massive amount of people who would spend the money, and upgrad to a PC version of OS X. So why not do it? Because Apple, as innovative as they are in the aspect of Hardware, and Software design, is to narrow minded to look outside of the box, err, cube?

Thats it, I'm out.

Hey, do you really want MacOs to be the #1 Operation System ?
Use your Mac and tell nobody that it is better.

I have no anti-virus software installed, because I never saw a virus on my mac. I do pictures, films, multimedia easily on my Mac. Nobody of the "DOS" people can imagine how you achieve this.
Why tell them ?

They will buy that XP thing, like they bought Windows, they will pay twice as much for their software and this funny new Code to get their system running,beacuse they can't copy it for private use, they will pay support people, when their system crashes.

Just smile, don't tell them there's a world behind the next hill.

If OS X were to be ported to --cheap-- Intel boxes, many, many people would not even think about buying an Apple-branded PC. There are people who value quality over a good bargain, but there are many people who do not care, as long as they can boot up. They will buy the cheapest machine they can get their hands on. A Macintosh is not that machine.

In addition to that, there would be no 'Classic' on an Intel box - and even if there were, it would be an emulation layer. Slow slow slow. So Apple would get trashed for not providing a good backwards compatibility layer for the people who choose to use Intel, and there would be controversy about leaving the older users behind, etc.

For Apple to port OS X to Intel would be stupid, from a business perspective. For enthusiastic users to port it (as I have heard is happening) is great, because any shortcomings (ie. no 'Classic' or very slow 'Classic') are not blamed on Apple.

Of course you would. Except Apple would have to charge about $500 for the OS, maybe more. Apple cannot stay in business selling a $129 OS. Apple makes their money from hardware - period. OS X on Intel means people would buy cheap PCs, not Apple PCs, thus Apple would lose money.

Then there's the issue of hardware support...

Task oriented computing

If you wanna XPerience much of the UI, I'm betting that much of it will have the same feel as MSN Explorer. It looks like it's directly oriented towards the home user, and lacks a professional feel to it.

But you can bet that people will swarm to it in droves, mostly because most people don't have a sense of style. To them XP will look incredible! And Microsoft is actually giving home users what they want: task oriented computing. You hit the Start button, and from there, choose Internet, email, games, music, etc. To them the computer is a tool, so why not have it act like one?

Contrast this to the OS X experience: login, you see icons bouncing (are they vying for my attention? what exactly does that mean?), and then nothing. Just a bunch of icons sitting at the bottom. Everything is so simplified as to be cryptic to the initial user. What do I do from here? Home users need more hand holding. Microsoft does this, Mac doesn't.

Hopefully, Jobs et al can act quickly on his digital hub premise and his thoughts that Finder doesn't have to be the interface. If Apple can come out with a task oriented shell like XP has, they'd be that much closer to being on par with it. They need something like At Ease for OS X that can be the default on iMacs. Apple really needs to get moving. I think if someone (Dell, Gateway) can package a nice box with XP on it, and sell it as "you never have to turn it off, it won't crash, and it's easy to get in, do what you need to do, and get out," then Apple could have a big problem in the future at least in terms of iMacs.

Maybe this will push Apple to put G4s and Superdrives (supposedly in 2002) in iMacs at the same price point. Then they'll fly off the shelves...

OH MY GOD!!! F$#KING Microsoft stole that whole thing! I'm watching an interview with Jim Allchin right now on CNET.com. He says that he thinks the PC will go from the Post-PC era to becoming the centerpoint. He says that the reason for this is that the power of the PC, with its larger screen, keyboard, and larger storage can manage all the little devices. Hey wait, didn't Jobs say this before?

Then he goes on to other things, like an example of remote control of someone else's computer, IE TIMBUKTU!!!

Oh yeah, he starts out by contradicting the whole .NET initiative by saying what if you don't have the Internet, don't you want to have local access to the files, what if you're on a plane and can't get info? HAHAHA .NET is supposed to provide access to your information anywhere, anytime, by storing info on remote servers...

What's sad is that people will once again attribute the centerpoint concept to Mickeysoft.

Apple spends so little on Research and development compared to Microsoft but yet look at who comes out with the technology. This has such an aqua-esqe look to it. To make it worse they even used the same rubber ducky as Mac OS 9 as a login icon. They "copied" the Multiple Users Startup look of Mac . They even moved the Recycle Bin to the lower right corner. I wonder where that Idea came from.
This is so sad. The only thing more sad is how many people fall for it as their own work

Keep up the Great Work MS

I just love the consistency of Microsoft. Thanks to them I am 85% more accurate and 50% quicker (right Gartner?)than everyone else by occassionally bringing work home. My peers just scratch their heads as I get the big contracts, interesting and challenging assignments and the juicy money ladden promotions. Of course none of them would consider using a Mac, which suits me just fine.
Someday a computer company will come out with an object user interface (OUI) because frankly the GUI is getting long in the tooth.
Until then, I know I can depend on Microsoft to keep the dweebs where they belong, addicted to their "help me" machines. Why do you think they call Windows user friendly? Because you need a lot of friends to figure out how to make it run. Windows is not about business productivity, its about making money over people who would rather tinker than get some work done.

the screenshots were done on a Mac? Someone earlier proposed that the screenshots were made up and aren't actually shots of a "working" system. What if that is true and the creator put in those icons (the duck, the Sherlock look-a-like magnifying glass, the recycle in the lower right corner) as a way of poking fun at the way Microsoft copies the Mac? We know there are Macs up in Redmond.

Well, I agree that there would be hardware issues, and yes, the G4 is superior to the PIII and 4, but the Athlon even torches the G4 in some apps. I think apple should use the Athlon chips, which, lets face it are far more available than the G4's and Port OSX. Everyone says that would drop hardware sales, but lets face it. MICROSOFT DOESN'T SELL HARDWARE, AND ARE WORTH A h*** OF A LOT MORE THAN APPLE. The time has come to truely think different. Dell should buy gateway, and Apple needs to drop the g4, pick up the athlon, and get OSX running on the pc boxes around the world. There is a website osxoninel.com that has over 25,000 requests from people like myself to get Apple to do this. Lets see, 25000*129.00 = a s**t load of money, and more people will see it, want it, buy it, and eventually apple can produce the best os, to the most number os systems. This doesn't take a slide ruler to figure out.

Nothing really new

Microsoft is obviously scared about MacOS X. So they're doing what they've always done. Steal. Their theft will be inexact, inadequate and ugly. What's new? Windows users will flock to it, though corporations will hedge, and eventually move to it. They'll wade through tons of compatibility problems and eventually upgrade all their machines because the old ones won't run it (I'm typing on an NT 4 machine at a LARGE company right now. I'm sure I'll have a new box a year from now, after they've decided to go to this instead of Win2k) Only a year or two they "banned" Macs. What's new?

This is the way Microsoft kept/built their 80% of the market, and it won't change. Bill's always been right--great marketing is much more effective than having a better product. The best hope for personal computing is for all of us to educate Windows lemmings. Show them OS X is really better, and why. Find your Linux buds and show them how cool MacOS on top of Unix is. Inform people in the store when you hear a salesman utter complete bu*lsh*t. Maybe Mac OS X can build to 30% of the market, and keep it. If so, we should be happy.

I remember thinking what a pain Aqua was going to be--it's really a step DOWN from the interface we have now, in order to get what we really need--a stable OS...the good news is that Microsoft has fallen into it like a well-laid trap! Rejoice! And imitation is the sincerest form of flattery--Bill just validated MacOS for Steve. I think he should mention that in Tokyo next week.

I surely feel Bill thinks he's really funny, and "in-your-face" for copying every last detail so closely. It will backfire. This justice department business isn't done yet, and they won't take kindly to Microsoft's threats after Apple sues them for not having a single original idea. (and Microsoft really *does* like to sell Apple software, to hedge their bets)

Nevertheless, this reminds me of some stuff John Scully wrote about the Coke-Pepsi wars. Apple (Pepsi) is way ahead on this because all of Microsoft's (Coke's) efforts are going to be directed toward copying the appearance of MacOS (retrofitting Coke bottlers to do 16-ounce bottles). Once they figure out how to make it similar, Apple will have delivered the *real* goods--all the Unix goodies that have never been seen on a consumer's desk. The first LEGITIMATE operating system with a decent GUI, broadly distributed to homes everywhere! In a way, they're playing right into Apple's hands.

OSX on Drugs--Er...Intel

Slide ruler, 25000 * $129 may be a sh*tload to you, but it's nothing for a medium sized software project, and this is a LARGE software project (someone figured $1B for Bill's MacRipOffX--and they hardly even sell it--they use it to bait people so they can sell all their apps for it). Compare that to money from shipping machines by dropping a decimal on the left (2500) and adding one on the right ($1290)...and see how much more money (hundreds of times that) they make from machines (look at their 10Q).

Intel just doesn't make any sense for the reasons posted before your comments, and Athlon is only slightly more attractive. Apple's best processor bet is to bond better with IBM so they can get good yields on their PowerPCs. As for running on Windose boxes, some synergy with HP might help. If they ran on the same boxes HP makes to run Windows, we'd see a pretty good comparison on a stable (and limited distribution) box--but at least there'd be a potential head-to-head comparison ala OpenStep.

Speaking of which, it's about time for someone to rumor an Apple/Sun, Apple/HP merger again--and both of these look more attractive than they ever have--for both parties! Of course, the Steverino would have to hit the road, again, because he'd have none of it.

All this OS c***!
I am quite sick of OS 9.x and the Windows 95/98/ME variants since they are all huge pieces of s***. Yes OS 9.x has a better GUI but its still crappy underneath in that it crashes alot just like the Windows c***. So what ends up happening is that 25%-50% of the time the user has to goof around with the OS rather than get real work done.

OS X is supposed to correct a lot of those problems. We shall see. Win2K appears to be stable and runs pretty well on my box. Though I had to upgrade the NIC.

I find the licensing scheme of the upcoming Windows products to be incredibly rediculous. Will only boot 50 times? You can only install it twice and you have to register the c***. Talk about utter stupidity. And the stupid windows users won't complain much.

Its all just piss poor c***. Give me something that works and that works well. So far I think Apple has the lead in that arena. They need to seriously capitalize on it in order to be successful.

Luna/Aqua

Hmm....lets take another look at this interface naming. Apple picked Aqua for the OSX interface because it wants to put across that the Mac interface is liquid and smooth, and the source of life. Good naming.
Luna means moon...but what is the moon? It's a big dead rock in the middle of the vacuum of space (essentially nothing). I think this actually is the most accurate name they could've come up with. Luna looks pretty from a distance (like the moon), but one you get close I'm sure its not very impressive...and what are you surrounded with? A void..like the "dependable Windows engine" and the inside of MS's interface designer's heads.
There's truth in naming...and while Aqua flows, Luna does nothing. Just sits.

Digital Hub Not Apple

I was at a Microsoft developer conference in April 2000 where Jim Allchin from Microsoft clearly stated that Whistler (Windows XP) would be the Digital Hub of the home even before Steve said it in January 2001. Microsoft has known this is coming and have been working toward it for almost two years now.

In addition in April 2000, Microsoft was showing off Disc Burner like integration with the Whistler shell (think Finder) for Whistler.

Apple started playing catchup and bought SoundJam and Radialogic in October 2000 to make up for lost time in this game.

The one area where Apple is currently the market is DVD Authoring. iDVD is fantastic and they bought Astarte early enough in 2000 to make it happen, so they are on top of this area.

When are we Mac users going to grow up and possibly accept the fact that there are good people working on Windows in many cases and they can have an original idea. Not every good idea comes from Steve and Apple. Example, the original Mac borrows from the Xerox PARC work. The Mac is a great improvement on the original work, but Apple did NOT create the concept in most cases.

Microsoft may be jumping on the Aqua bandwagon with Luna. Still, they may be onto something. It is closer to the original Windows interface which means less corporate retraining. This makes it quite likely that customers will upgrade.

The question earlier about the start menu being so large, yes it is much larger than the current one. However, unlike the Dock it is only visible when you click on Start to display the menu and not all the time.

about the digital hub

First, I think the post I referred to about the "digital hub" being first from MS might be true. But given the fact that MS do not use the term and the digital hub is truly not an certain thing for MS.

Having a disc burner thing is totally different from having itune and iDVD. Also the DVD pro software. Steve Jobs' digital hub focus is much more complete because they push the direction towards it by making the software and also hardware so the package is complete.

I disagree the point on Apple borrows from Xerox. This had been through many times. Apple made the first personal computer, that is the first one have a keyboard, first to have a monitor, with color, well, look into history youself... Xerox's GUI did made a different, but the Xerox project is not a complete one, and have lots of flaws. Apple's team do the whole thing from scratch, they essentially hired the people from the team which will be closed down. That wasn't a ripped off.

I certainly agree there are lots of talents in Redmond, no double about it. And so as Apple. What makes the difference is leadership. You can have a bunch of great people but still unoriginal because the leadership made it that way. Just think if Bill said he want the new Windows looks like OS X, what can you do as a talented programmer? And the order came from 3 levels above you, then how creative can you be?

My point is MS's way of doing things should separate from the programmers work for them. We're slamming MS not their programmers.

You can play fair all along to say they're copying each other. But if you really look at the facts, let Apple alone, how many times MS do the same thing to other companies?

Is Luna a rip off of Aqua? I'm not sure yet, since their web site has so little to show and the screenshots are not enough to judge that. But comparing the ridiculously large start menu with the dock and put down the dock is lame. The start menu did not visible all the time, but what is truly the problem is the navigation distance and real estate management. I don't know is the other menu will be the same proportion as the start menu (which supposingly the consistency should made it so), but covering your screen with menu like that is mere stupid. The question is: what's wrong with the original menu size? This change is obviously purposeless and meaningless. Then comes the size, where I'm not sure how many space can you have on your task bar to contain items as today's do. But certainly they're going to let you make some adjustment, well... who knows...

Personally I think this is the next logical step in computers. (although I must say MS' implementation is just plain wrong.) The interface should be simple and easy to use. It should be intuitive. (as in not placing the "Log Off" and "Shut Down" options in the "Start" menu!?! Why not place these options on the other side of the task bar?)

First thing that needs to happen to modern OSes ... get rid of file based systems and move onto object based systems. You could still have objects called "files" to hold user data, but all that other c*** stored in directories, who wants to look through that? Besides it makes systems more confusing and less secure when users have access to it. When you install an application, a folder is created with about 20 files inside it. Why? Why not just 1 icon - the application. Does the user really need to see all that c***? Nope. I don't think so.

No Heart

I thought they couldn't go any lower. The worst thing about it is MS didn't even try. I new they have a long history copying the ideas of others but this is ridiculous. Anyone who said windows was easier to use than Mac OS is fooling themselves. I work for a ASP in MA and seeing a computer crash without doing anything could only be win98. Try to install drivers for different devices. I could right a book. As a MAC user I have never been more insulted. The real OS is dew March 24th.

Just sad

I just find it really, really sad for Microsoft, as well as for us, that they are so intellecually void that they must stoop to such a low level.

If I were a MS employee right now, I'd be ashamed that my company - the biggest, most sucessful software company - feels the need to plagariase the work of Apple. Microsoft should be leading the world in innovation, but no - that is left up to Apple, Microsoft's free R'n'D division.

I want Microsoft to be it's own person. You know ? It's a bit like a younger brother who, although he has 'made it bigtime', and has the money and the girls, is still jelous of his big brother who has remained true to his virtues, and leads a simple life herding goats.

Beta testers

Considering that Microsoft NEVER EVER releases a version of their OS that isn't buggy as can be the first 10-20K users will
actually be doing the beta testing for the Final release of Windows. Now Apple made the Public Beta available and the release of OS X in March most likely will be pretty bug-free, like all their OS versions have been.

On another note, I think "XP" means "X-Pired". The end, finito, kaput, that's all she wrote.

More Similarities

Did anyone notice the small detail of the hidden passwords on the "Multiple Users Login" screen? They're dots �, not stars *. As an amatuer computer user, this was one of the first things I noticed being different between MacOS and Win. In Mac my passwords always showed up ��, whereas in Windows they were always *********. Interesting.

Damn people, if Microsoft would have changed nothing you would bash them for not changing. Following Apples inovation in GUI appearance and your still not happy. As much as I love my Macintosh, I never forget that there is a larger community out there called 'computers'. Within the culture of Windows, it is acceptable, in fact common, for people to copy other peoples work. To a PC person, the concept of copying Aqua to create Luna is a normal thing. What amazes me is the Macintosh community, is still shocked whenever MS copies something from Apple i.e. Windows, OpenDoc, Plug and Play, common command API, etc. You should be used to it by now; the Apple Community Creates, the PC Community Copies, the Linux community emulates.

Get over it or do something about it.

Reason I'm buying OSX

I use PCs with Windows almost exclusivley, yet I bought a copy of OSX to support Apple. The more sales of OSX there are, the more improvements I'll see in the OS I actually use, Windows. There's some idealistic hankerings to support the creators, but mostly I bought OSX to push Microsoft.

"Campus Rep for Apple"

Oh please! I USE Windows machines, and I USE Macs. I do not OWN Windows boxes because they're an unholy nightmare to configure. Actually, the WinNT interface isn't too horrible.

What pisses me off, watching Apple and M$ and using both systems, is that Microsoft is incapable of improving without outright theft. I mean, it wouldn't bother me if they copied the real cool parts of MacOS 9 and X. It wouldn't bother me if they copied the tools. What bothers me is they're trying to DUPLICATE the entire OS, and DUPLICATE Jobs' major themes in his presentations! There's nothing but complete shame here!

Frankly, I prefer MacOS 9 and WinNT's overall interface to Aqua/Luna anyway. I'm looking forward to MacOSX because it will be on top a solid core. I'm just as happy as I am disappointed in M$ that they'll spend the next two years floundering trying to copy Apple (again). By then, OSX will probably be pretty incredible.

that future argument

So often I hear "by the time..." in an argument for using Apple products. They're certainly driving the industry in terms of creativity in software, if only they'd drop the hardware bit & get some exposure.

All I want is OSX with the speed on screen of Windows. Window resizing, moving, scrolling... the processor MHz would have to be *at least* matched to give the Mac the extra processor power to push all the gradients & transparency around.

Macs may be faster per MHz, but with OSX they have to do a *lot* more on screen than the MHz multiplier offers.

Maybe "by the time" IBM agrees to fabricate Motorola's designs...

Windows Now Looks Lamer

Whilst Apple have gone for good looks maintaining a certain professional feel to overlay their powerful core OS & technologies with OSX and made a ground up new OS, Microsoft have decided to stick with the "Proven" (proven to crash, they could copyright crashes, bugs, viruses et al) Windows Engine and make an overlay (luna) that will appeal to (1) those who have never experienced a real computer and (2) children, professionals will have to use the stick with windows standard interface which I understand will remain available, i.e. why bother upgrading from Windows 2000, will it be for a few bug fixes and some additional bundled software, which is usually the case, take 95 to 98 and 98 to ME or NT to 2000. Sorry Microsoft, your Mac software does beat it's competition I will admit that but that is due to you have a better platform to work with.

ease of use is a joke

Forgive me, but I only took a cursory look at their website. I don't seem to see ease-of-use. If anything, I have a lot of questions, and the whole thing is messy.

For instance, what is: "Turn off the kitchen computer?"
Also, when it says "Add or change users go to control panel."

Does it help�to to find it? Does it tell you where control panel is? Is there only ONE control panel? Is "control panel" only for passwords and users? Why is control panel under "other programs"?

Please tell me why the desktop picture look is such a mess?

Yuck. And people I know are going to read articles about how great MS is with XP, even if they are Mac users.

You know, if you didnt' know this before, but there are people who believe everything they read about computers, because they are afraid of computers, etc. So they latch onto whatever they read.

Its so incredibly obvious that they are stealing the inovative new design that Apple has developed. They have to, if they don't they won't be able to compete. No body will want the clunky old Win 95 and ME once Apples new OS is out. multi user login

As for the multiple users logged in at the same time. That's something UNIX have been doing since the beginning (20 years?). Linux does that too and of course Mac OS X does that too. Linux and Mac OS X are NOT true UNIXes BTW - but very similar. So Apple didn't copy the multiple user logged in at the same time feature from Microsoft. They had it before them by way of the foundation.

Oh, and all passwords stored in one place? Can we all say Keychain?

Good News!

I checked out the screen shots of windows xp ... it looks like a toy ... something for kids. Mac OSX looks professional, serious. This is more smoke-and-mirrors from gates. How far can he take the core Windows code? I don't know if there is enough duct tape and string in the world to patch together a really "new" version of windows on top of the old, tired, bloated core code.

many people would not even think about buying an Apple-branded PC

I for one would buy an Apple product and pay the extra $$ for it. Would I build cheap computers to run for various other things? Sure I would, because I know them inside and out (courtesy of Microsoft and Intel - thank you - I get paid alot to support your c*** - if the Mac was mainstream I would be out of a job).

Some people will pay more for quality. The stupid ones look at only price.

Apple should have OSX on Intel. You know they can do it.

Oh my god, MS stole your rubber ducky! We all know Apple invented the rubber duck and magnafying glass! What's this, a folder in Windows. Hey, Macs have folders! They stole that too! Imagine, them using an arrow for a cursor! Come on people, get real. Who gives a rats arse where the trash can is. Who cares if they use an "X" in the name. Does Apple have a copyright on letters in the alphabet?

As for the size of the start menu, it's not visible all the time, and if you've ever used Windows 9x, you'll know there is an option for using small icons or large icons. I personally prefer the small icons, and I have the option to auto hide my task bar until I run my cursor to the bottom of the screen.

Wait a minute, who was first to have the bar running along the bottom of the screen with all the active applications. Wait, was it Microsoft? Yes, it was. Did Apple copy that? Oh no, that could never happen!

I use and own both platforms. I have an AMDK6-2 400 mhz running Win98, and a PB G3 233 running Mac OS 9.04. I like both. Neither of them crash more than twice a month, and that's the only time either get rebooted. Both are great platforms if you know anything about maintenance. Mac OS X looks to be a promising platform once more developers are creating software. As for Windows XP, I'll wait till I see more than a couple of screen shots before I make any decisions.

''Open source is an intellectual-property destroyer,'' Allchin said. ''I can't imagine something that could be worse than this for the software business and the intellectual-property business.''

Microsoft distributes some of its programs without charge to customers, although it generally doesn't release its programming code and it retains the ownership rights to that code. Linux is the most widely known open-source product, though other programs including the popular Apache system for Web servers also are developed the same way.

Brian Behlendorf, founder of open-source company CollabNet, said most companies that use the open-source development model do retain the rights to some of their intellectual property.

''I think Microsoft is trying to paint the open-source community as being fascist; that all software has to be free, or none of it can be,'' said Behlendorf, whose company helps businesses run their own open-source projects.

Allchin said he's concerned that the open-source business model could stifle initiative in the computer industry.

OS X-Plus? Does this refer to an enhanced version of the s*** Mac OS X by Apple or a PILFERED copy of Mac OS X by Microsoft? If justice means anything, I think that Apple should file a lawsuit to protect the name of its product and, as a just punishment, that a judge should rule that Microsoft must use the designation ME 2 for their sequel to the Millenium Edition.

What did MS do with Win95

Apple did a great thing with the Macintosh and took the ideas of a research institute that would never ship a product (STAR doesn't count really), improve it and bring it to the masses. The Macintosh did create a revolution.

With Windows 95, Microsoft brought a decent (but not great by any means) GUI based OS to the majority of computers users. As much as we believe that Apple should rule the world by their superior machines and OS, the truth was even when 9x was released that Apple was far behind in market share.

The problem now is that some Mac users won't accept criticism, especially if the comments are even slightly positive about Microsoft. The ironic thing is that even though you are calling me a faker, I have never owned a DOS or Windows based computer in my life. I have owned nothing but Macs since my Mac Plus in 1986 to my iBook I am writing this on today.

As I see the landscape today, Mac OS X is a step backward in many ways from the current Mac OS. The problem is that Apple is in such deep financial straits that instead of spending the next three to four months fixing more of the short comings and getting developers to the table, they are going to release Public Beta 2 and charge us $129 for the privilege of using a work in progress OS with little NATIVE application support.

Windows XP on the other hand is taking the stability of Windows 2000 and its driver model and improving the user experience so it would work for the less savvy users. Microsoft is moving Windows in the right direction especially moving Speech technologies forward in Office as well. Where is Speech on the Mac? I know that IBM and MacSpeech are working on it, but it should be a core OS feature.

For that last comment. I question weather or not you even own a MAC. First, Apple is not in financial straits they are known to have more than 4 Billion in the Bank. Most of that stuff came from Window editors looking for something negative to write about apple. 95 is far from decent. Nothing really has changed for Windows from 95 to 2000. When MS released 2000 it had 64,000 bugs. That is sloppy. All it is just 98 and NT combined. Sorry, but I am far form impressed. Nothing they have made have been innovative. Check the prices they charge for c*** that is the same year in and year out. 129$ is nothing considering your get a UNIX and MAC combo. There is nothing that can compare. MS brainwashed millions and muscled others to get where they are today. They have proven one thing. The are on the down side. Somewhat like a over the hill fighter. You have to look at why all these true MAC users are upset. That was cheap copy of the real thing. If you think MS is so great then tell them to make something bug free for once and to make a attempt to produce there own ORGINAL products.

GOOD GOD WAKE UP!!!

I will be the first person to step up to the mike, and say that the G4 tower is by far the best computer system that exists for PROFESSIONALS in the world today. OSX is the most modern operating system that exists, and kicks windoze a**! However, I have to say that for home users, ie: students, home finance, playing games, and typing papers, the PC is far superior to the iMac. Lets see I have a 17 inch trinitron. #2 MB Radeon, Athlon 1100 mhz (which can smoke the G4 in some apps), 16X DVD, CDRW, 40GB 7,200 RPM ATA 100 HD. To compare to a 8X DVD, 30GB 5,400 ATA 33 Drive, 500 Mhz G3 (This is a great Processor, but no Athlon 1100. 8mb ati video (Apple needs to quit ripping people off here, and a crappy a** 15 inch .28 dot pitch monitor. Apple needs to seriously upgrade the iMac with a 17in monitor, ata 66, or 100 support. Get 7,200 rpm drives in there. Put a combo dvd/cdrw in it, and speed up the G3, or put low end g4's in it. Yes, the Mac is a better machine in some ways, but so is the pc in others. Enjoy the system that have, and quit bitching about what Microsoft does. As long as you support apple, they will continue to prosper, and will continue to put out great products. By wasting your time bashing Microsoft, nothign will get accomplished. Oh, by the way, The luna interface looks nothing like OSX. It looks like something that my daughter would have came up with, I just hope it will support themes, and thank God for Stardock, so I can make my PC look like a Mac anyway.

Finally, Win 2000 has been running on my system for exactly 4 months now. Not one crash. And I can do other things while my document is sent to my printer. How can you tell the difference between an 8x and 14x DVD drive? Use a lot of DVD-ROMs? I haven't used one myself.

Finally, Win 2000 has been running on my system for exactly 4 months now. Not one crash. And I can do other things while my document is sent to my printer. My wifes iMac, crashes about once every two weeks, and we all know she can't do anything while the document spools to the printer.

I have two computers on my desk at work: a Dell Win2K Pro box and an iMac running Mac OS X Public Beta. Guess which one I use 95% of the time, even though there are no others like it in the company. Am I productive? h*** YES. (I admit to having an external monitor on the iMac, though. Saves a lot of eyestrain.)

Now guess which one has to be rebooted -- or spontaneously boots itself -- more often.

BTW, your wife's computer is misconfigured. Nearly every print driver I've seen has an option to print in the background. If yours doesn't, this is a software issue, not an OS issue.

I agree with you that you can't tell the difference in the DVD at 8x and 14x, but the difference lies in the other speed that the DVD performs. At 8X / 24X CD read speed it is much slower than the 16 X / 40X read that I have in the althon. The difference comes when you are playing games, it reduces the amount of seek time. To put an external monitor on the iMac defeats the entire purpose of the machine. It is a desk space saver. Lets see I'll put my iMac under my desk with a nice trinitron 17 inch or 19 inch on the top? For that price, I could have the cube, even though it is still far inferior in hardware configuation specs than my athlon. I will say again the G4 Tower is by far the best system for professionals, and has the best OS, but Apple needs to really go after the home user in order to secure its place in the market, and this will, in effect, make whatever microsoft does a moot point. People have been brainwashed by microsoft, and intel to the point is is sick. I use to sell Macs at Sears (BOO HISS), and 99% of the people that I would recomend a Mac to would say, "Yes, but it can't run widowze" which I would respond, yes, it can with VPC (for whom I am a beta Tester), but furthermore, why would you want to run windows? Anyway, all I was trying to say is that we, as mac people, need to focus on the positive, and let the negative stay with Microsoft. We all know that they suck, the whole world knows they suck. They became the largest though because during the mid 90's Macs were so expensive that home users could not afford them. Now apple has the opportunity to change that. I hope they do. I really believe that it is a better product, but it is a product that the average home user cannot afford. Other than that I agree with you, it is just that Apple needs to change its home user strategy, and offer up an iMac, or an (iCube)? that will give the home user more bang for the buck. If they do that Microsoft will take care of itself, with a little help from the DOJ.

Wow. Gates is certainly asserting his ability to reverse-engineer Apple's (Steve's) work and bring it to market before Apple does. I have trouble imagining that Steve won't go ballistic over this; lawsuits, bad karma, the whole original Mac/Windows drama played out all over again.

Or, maybe people will like the new Windows XP (Yes, thats a direct X-Plus ripoff of X), and it will make it easier for Windows users to adapt to the Mac interface. A major pardigm of the OSX interface is to make it be a bottom-up interface like Windows, rather than a top-left-to-bottom-right interface like the current MacOS.

Microsoft has unfairly stolen the excellent, hard work of Apple's many telented designers and writers. HThis would be actionable if not for MS' sure steps at taking revenge if Apple were to exercise their obvious right. I'm sure that an investigation of MS' internal email records would reveal (ala the MS anti-trust suit, God knows those dopes can't figure out how to get rid of them), that there was talk within the company of "making best use of" Apple's upcoming OSX release.

This is demonstrably not true. According to the book "Just Java 2, Fourth Edition" pages 341, 342, there is a "lihgt relief" story called "Did Apple Copy Xerox"? This story talks about Jef Raskin, who started the MAcintosh project, which started in 1979, long before Jobs went to PARC to check things out. Raskin asked Jobs to go to PARC to see the WYSIWYG GUI as a way to convince Jobs that such a GUI was a good idea. Raskin wrote his thesis in 1967 that computers should be all graphic. The thesis was entitled "The Quickdraw System." Raskin, Bill Atkinson, and others came up with many of the now familiar GUI elements. Raskin himself wrote a paper entitled "Holes in the Histories" which talks about the common misperception of Apple copying Xerox. This paper is in July 1994 _Interactions_1.3_ page 11.

Lets not continue to spread the common misconception of Apple copying Xerox.

Hey, Windows,
Looks like we have some few things in common. I'm using a Mac for a very long time too. Just like you, I'm not saying that OS X is a step forward, did I said that? (how to know... I did'nt try OS X yet). Like you again, I have never owned a DOS or Windows based computer in my life too (but I have been forced to work with a bloody PC box for ONE YEAR :-(( for professionnal reasons, and believe me, it's a real pain and against any concept of productivity. Turkeys, turkeys & turkeys).

However, we have definitively different points of view. It seems again that you try to play the game of the blind conciliator who wants absolutely find goodness in everyone (read: in Microsoft and kind Wondoz users). The point is not to know if Windoz people is happy with their stuff, if Microsoft is moving Windows in the right direction, and if Windows 2000 is stable or not. Ho la la, I really really dont give a s*** about that.

Please understand me. I just want to point out that:
-When you say that "the original Mac borrows from the Xerox PARC work" your lying to yourself. Even if it did, the final product is a complete different galaxy.

-Do you really have to find out if XP if yes or no a rippoff of OSX to make your opinion about Microsoft? Common Window! Remember the fantastic theatrical masquerade organized in 95? EVERYTHING was 100% artificial. The art of CREATING a world event, moving masses with publicity and media's collaboration. MOREOVER, every single word was a lie. So 90% of the planet's hamster brain loosers PC users discovered what they believed to be the first friendly-user OS.

If Microsoft stealed or not the idea of desktop, folders, trash... is NOT THE POINT. OS X Ripoff...

...aka "Windows XP"

Smart, Microsoft. Why not call it Windows X? And stealing those Apple icons?

Anyway, I don't think that there's anything to worry about. First of all, there are too many Windows iterations as it is; thus it is doubtful that there will be masses running for XP. Also, it's built on the Windows codebase, so it's still unreliable. Finally, although the interface does seem to copy MacOS X, the interface looks incredibly clumsy.

sorry but i look at XP and OSX and i don't see much similarity at all, XP is just a cheesey dumbed down version of Windows. why are people getting so worked up about it? so the waste bin is at the bottom right... its a good place for it to be. when my wife got a PC (no choice due to work - bummer) after using my Mac for a few months the first thing she did was move the recycle bin. of course windows has this thing about rearranging all the desktop icons at random but c'est la vie

Good Lord, find something better in life to complain about besides rounded window edges, a damn duck, a name for a GUI, and the Gold Pedals picture. For all you people out there bitching about the gold pedals pic, its in WIN ME so shut up, the Search for people on the internet icon in windows has been the same since the first release of 98, Apple stole it! I love my PC, and I love my Mac, they serve different purposes, and different needs. Just love yours, and SHUT UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

After 190 posts, here my 2 cents

Thruth is that Microsoft just tryed to emulate Mac OSX because they see it as a threat to the Windows operating system.
Truth is that they ALWAYS have and ALWAYS will look at what s out there, copy it and anounce it as their own.
Truth is that Windows users in their large majority are idiots...always more idiots than clever people.
Truth us that PC reseller sell systems where they can make money on, hence selling an OS that need constant upgrades because those customers will have to come back to have their system fixed
Truth that the PC world is a HUGE giant and anything that does not help them is seen as a threat.
Thruth that the PC world would not like to see hundreds of thousand of jobs in PC repair/install/resellers disapear because finally there is a system out there that doesn t need them.

The Apple OSes have always been a threat to the PC world... IT people hate macs because you don t need them to be able to use and fix it... imagine what would happend to the economy if ALL these jobs were to go... I take care of ALL the mac in our company and I am just an Art Director...there are 11 guys taking care of the PCs.

Corporations stay with PCs because they follow what the IT people tell them and IT people do not want to loose their jobs so they promote PCs

MS just once more copies the competition and tells the world that they are the first. In our world only people reading web site like macnn know the truth... other people just know what they see on TV or read in the press. It is time for some controversy, damit it is soooooo obvious that XP is a tentative rip off of the OS X hype, so much that they ABSOLUTELY needed to have a X in the new name to create a little confusion.

What mac users need is to lobby more and more...keep fighting, keep showing these screenshots to the rest of the world...for me I am an evangelist already and I do my best to boycott MS products whenever I can, and it will stay that way not because I prefer the mac interface but because Microsoft can only COPY and not inovate and that is why I do not respect MS people

Oh well....all this shows us is that hard core mac users were right all along!
Microsoft Sux! Microsoft is unoriginal, and Microsoft is good at cheap shots!
That really is pretty low of them to copy MacOS to such an extent. Unfortunately many people look at Microsoft as some kind of gift from God and would never dare think that Microsoft stole ideas off another company.
Apple ain't going to sue them, in fact they ain't gunna do much with MacOS X release coming up......but MacOS will always kick Window's arse.....even if they keep on stealing Apple's ideas.

Feels good to be a threat to MS!Again! Although for the life of me, I can't understand how tiny Apple can be such a threat to the giant MS. Most PC users do not even know Apple still exists!
It must be a personal thing between Gates and Jobs...

OS X promotional campaign

Apple should at least spend twice as much on the OS X promotinal campaignas MS spent promoting Win 95. Only then will those currently not using a Mac see that there is an alternative to Windows and that MS did copy from OS X!!

Duck!!!!!!!!!!!

The duck image was stolen by Apple from Photoshop by the way. Of course you wouldn't know that because most Mac users now days are not in the design/publishing industry.

Speaking of which... most PC users might be idiots but you can't even get THAT far before you realize that most PC users as well as most Mac users don't do much other than word processing and gaming on their computer. You can't tell someone how great the Mac is if they are just surfing and turfing.

You are never going to get people to switch to Mac unless they are trying to do a REAL job that requires the power of the Mac or lack thereof on the PC. Even then the only job that I can realistically promote the Mac over the PC with is graphic design/publishing. I suppose some scientist find the Mac superior in computational skills but I don't have enough data on that.

Most PC users are not idiots, they just don't care enough about the computer they are using-they are just zombies who sit at a desk. The computer is the least of their worries. Their job is the real nightmare. Most people are probably glad their PC crashes often. Hey, more time for coffee breaks.

Besides, real computer geeks know the Mac is superior; they just want to get inside the guts a little more (hence OS X). Beyond that, real geeks use Unix (hence OS X).

Those janitor drones that mop up computer messes at an IT business are not real geeks anyway. They are only there because they bothered to get a lame degree in Windozology at college. You know, where older "geeks" teach them that Macs are not real computers and Unix is outdated.

What a bunch of frekin' thieves are they to do something so obvious as to rip off the aqua interface. Let's see, Aqua has 4 letters, and Luna has 4 letters, and they both end in an A, and both have to do with nature.

You know, this is a definite sign that Bill is so jealous of Steve that he would try to copy his every step. If they were in highschool Bill would be following Steve around like a lost puppy.

That's cause the general public are a bunch of collective idiots. XP doesn't sound like an upgrade. It sounds like another Bill Gates hacked rip off product like the Playstation2 Box, er I mean the X-Box. And I suppose if someone started calling themselves Malcolm XP they'd see that as an upgrade to Malcolm X? I mean sweet f'n cripes! But like I said before, the general public only likes what's popular and not more efficient. Windows to h*** is more like it.

aboot the 'X'

Anyone remember "Project X"? It still works under Mac OS 9.1 (runs pretty darn fast with a G3 or G4, and even seems to support text smoothing with the Appearance Manager). I don't know Project X was brought to the public, or for that matter when X Windows for Unix systems was first displayed, but the X has definitely been around for awhile.

I would love to see Project X, if a bit outdated, along with OpenDoc and a few other discontinued programs at Apple, to be rolled into new Mac OS X programs. Of course it's too late for anything new to be considered for the release of OS X, but Apple has a lot of patents and useful software just sitting around.

At the time development of these projects was cancelled, Apple was in pretty hard times and could not afford to back them up financially. With new applications using built-in (free) speech recognition and OpenDoc, and perhaps a super-cool Titanium handheld, a kickstart now could draw new sales in a market that seems incredibly bored with PCs.

P.S. The Project X program was distributed on the MacAddict CD #2, but I don't know where else you can find it these days.

windows xp is NOT Me second edition. it is a total re write. it is NT/2000 code for home users. if you call that windows me second, yer insane. it is not even based on windows me or any 9x OS at all in any way what so ever. it is based on NT/2000. please fix the pics page cus it dont load saying too much traffic. put it on a free server like geocities or some place. in my opinion to the guy who said how Ms names windows xp to steal thundetr away from mac os x, yer nutts. you say it sounds like an upgrade over mac s x or something like that and makes people think they should go out and get it cus its newer then mac os x. thats just stupid stupid thinking. i have other things to say to flame but no point. i dont mean to be rude but all what people say that i ever read is hogwash. if i could see the pics yer talking about id like to but none of the links work. i have seen the images from microsoft site and it looks descent. steal from aple, yes. notice the trash can looks like a G4 in a way and it is where mac is, bottem right. BUT, i have beta 1 of whistler and it looks like windows me more. now the pics at MS site, they look different then in whistler beta 1, so it must be a newer version.

Hey, that comment on windows XP standing for windows cut and paste was FUNNY! I like that. I don�t think all of us �Mac People� need to worry. Steve is infinitesimally smarter than Bill. Bill will take the shortest path to make the most money. If it means ripping off ideas, then he will. But he�s an idiot. Remember this, �a computer will never need more that 640k memory� or how about how far he got behind because he thought the internet was a fad! He is missing the Unix band wagon and will be left far in the dust of forward progress as will all the sleepy windoze followers. Soon he�ll be charging them money for each reboot and their OS will so lock down their system they will not be able to play their own legitimate CD�s without first paying a franchise fee.

Don�t worry. The intelligent people on this planet use Macs. No need to argue. I have converted so many PC users. Anyone who uses a Mac for a month is turned. People who say they have used both HAVEN�T. Maybe for an hour or two. Ever try to load a game on windows NT and run it? It�s funny. It�ll be the same. Microsoft will collapse itself.

Mac os Windows ME 2?

Excuse Microsoft for having some good Ideas once in a while. Mac's OS has looked basicly the same since the verry first Mac OS. You people who stuck with mac through thick and thin are just sour because you realise that there might just be somethin better? Oh, and by the way Microsoft was not the first to "steal" that type of OS design. Mr. Jobbs stole it from Xerox first, oh and did you know Microsoft owns part of Apple Computers Inc.?
