"iPhone" may affect Motorola sales

updated 11:55 am EST, Mon March 20, 2006

Motorola outlook

Any Apple-branded mobile phone device could affect Motorola's outlook, although it has parterned with Apple on iTunes. Forbes reports that one analyst believes that the US-handset maker may be vulnerable to a possible new "iPhone" from Apple, saying that such a device "could put a dent in" Motorola's profits." Despite the caution, however, Standard & Poor's Equity Research analyst Kenneth Leon maintained a "strong buy" Motorola, saying that he believes the company's current phone devices, including the second generation iTunes SLVR L7 phone, will boost sales in second half of 2006. "As the U.S. handset leader, Motorola may be vulnerable to any new handset trend but we believe it is ready to ship in size its own innovative products soon," said the analyst.

    Not just Motorola

The funny thing about apple is that whatever they make, except for the iPodHiFi, usually breaks all kinds of limits and opens new ways of doing things.

If Apple makes an iPhone, you can bet I will finally make my step into the the world of mobile phoning, something I have refused to do because of telecos in the US over pricing and limited feature set. (compare prices and features available in Eurpope)

If they are going to drag me into the mobil era, they will certainly entice a few telecom switchers.

How is apple making a phone going to get you into the arena? You still have to buy service from someone, and thus still stuck dealing with the 'US pricing' and 'limited feature set' (like what does a phone have to do but, I don't know, make calls). And you'll be paying 2 or 3 times more for the phone then you would from the telcos. So you're paying more for the same crappy service.

    Whoopee!

    Oh, one more thing

I like this line: Forbes reports that one analyst believes that the US-handset maker may be vulnerable to a possible new "iPhone" from Apple, saying that such a device "could put a dent in" Motorola's profits."

Isn't that like saying Apple could be vulnerable to a possible new 'ipod killer' and such a device 'could' put a dent in their profits.

    limited use

my cingular motorola v180 should act as a gprs modem and as a fax modem with my powerbook and a usb cable. it does not. the model that i got from europe does. that's part of the limitations of service; my phone should be capable of wireless data. Landlines did it, wireless does as well. I demand it, and as a geek I can understand resisting to support them.

apple would at least make the device work as promised forcing companies to open up what people can and cannot do with their devices and service plans. viva la apple!

    bigger plans

Apple will probably not sell their phone through one of the big service providers, instead choosing to sell their own branded 'network', similar to Virgin. This will give them more control, and we all know Apple only thrives when they are in control.

And it will not be a device for just 'making calls' -- their network will become the way of getting music, movies, podcasts, etc., into iPods. Apple will profit from selling you the iPod phone, selling you the songs and videos, AND reselling the bandwidth you use to download it.
