Westlake drops support for 3dfx

Westlake Interactive President Mark Adams recently told games.macnn.com that the company is likely not going to officially support owners of 3dfx Interactive graphics cards in their upcoming games including Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2. "We really liked 3Dfx's cards, but its going to be hard to make the business case to support them now," says Adams. "We don't know what the installed base of Mac 3Dfx cards is, and with no new drivers coming out, we could easily get stuck with a driver bug that keeps a game from working." Other current projects at the company include Escape from Monkey Island and Tomb Raider: Chronicles.

    Thank god....

...I didn't buy a Voodoo5 for $300 bucks! Man would I be pissed off now! I'll stick to using my voodoo3 'til OSX is official released then I guess I'll have to buy a Radeon.

Sigh. If only nVidia would release a mac rom and flash utility so that I could buy a Geforce2mx. I'd really rather give them a chance then be stuck with ATI.

    Come on!

What cards will be supported? ATI? Except for the Radeon, there aren't any capable pre-installed ATI cards. I think there's a huge installed base of 3dfx users. I've owned 3 of them, and planned on buying a Voodoo5, especially since they're so cheap now. I wouldn't give up on us yet, Westlake.

    Clarification

    Hi,

I think it's important to note that Mark said "not going to officially support owners of 3dfx Interactive graphics cards in their upcoming games", with _OFFICIALLY_ being the operative word.

It's more of a legal issue than a hardware issue.

If we say a game supports a card, and then it doesn't, we have to fix the game so it does (up to a certain point, at least). If the problem is a driver issue for a card that no longer has any driver support or updates, it would be impossible to fix it.

For instance, if it turns out that OpenGL stops working with the Voodoo drivers with OS9.5, or OSX (for instance), then there isn't any way these cards could be supported for games that require OpenGL, because no one can update the drivers to fix any problems (even if they are incredibly minor).

FWIW, Escape From Monkey Island appears to work just fine on Voodoo5 cards (and Voodoo3 last I checked...I have one in my old Beige G3 that served me well for quite a while :). However, EFMI probably won't support them "officially" because of their unsupported status.

I hope that clears things up some...it's not that we don't want to support them, just that we can't lock ourselves into supporting them legally.

    bye :-)

    Voodoo 5

What really needs to be done is someone needs to write some killer generic Voodoo drivers for the Mac and keep them updated so they keep working with everything. My Voodoo 5 will continue to be my workhorse card until I can be assured no one is going to write some generic drivers - which I seriously doubt will ever happen. I would pay for such drivers! We need a great developer for us die-hard Voodoo fanatics!
