Maxtor yesterday began shipping its 531DX line of hard drives, which features 70 percent fewer parts than its other drives as well as a device that locks the writing head in place when not in use to reduce the risk of damage. The 5400 RPM drive is also just 17 mm tall and is available in 10 and 15 GB capacities.

    Must be bigger

If they plan to sell any, they have to release this in much larger capacities.

Also I could swear my hard drive had a ramp for the heads when parked, I really don't think they are the first to implement this.

    Travelstars too

IBM Travelstars made since January 1999 all lock the heads after they've been idle for a couple of seconds, employing a little-used powersaving spec (and register) from the ATAv4 standard. It's supposed to save power as well as be safer. In practice it's actually kind of annoying, because the drive mutters when they do it and feels a little slower when they move back into position. The drive is supposed to "learn" an appropriate setting for the register, but I've never seen a tool for the Mac or Unix that could just turn the damn thing off (there's an unsupported Windows program that can change the setting temporarily, but that's all).

    tradeoffs

well if you've ever done Engineering you'll know that it's all about tradeoffs. these drives are meant for people who require longevity and durability in a harddrive, and that comes at the expense of a little space. the 15GB drive, for instance, is literally a 30GB drive, but with only one side of the platter used for writing! this allows the drive to be smaller and have less moving parts as the 2nd set of read heads on one side of the platter aren't there.

at any rate, if you want more space, then buy another harddrive! but if you need the features that this drive provides, then you'll have to sacrifice the enormous drive sizes.

    big hard drives

i agree with the comment above. If you really want a big hd go buy another hd. These hd's are just made for durability and longevity. There are plenty of other 5400rpm hd's on the market
