ZDnet, PC Magazine on PB G4; iTunes 'rocks'

updated 11:15 pm EST, Mon February 12, 2001

", 0, 0);

ZDnet calls the PowerBook G4 "drool-worthy," noting that the "15.2 wide-screen display is hands-down the nicest screen we've ever seen on a portable," while PC Magazine's review reads like spec sheet, noting that a 12-degree vertical shift causes image degradation on the screen (but mistakenly insists that the PowerBook doesn't have a fan). Meanwhile, Bob Levitus, writing for the Houston Chronicle, says iTunes rocks, calling it elegant and appealing.

    PC mag is a hack

That PC magazine write up was a hack. They basically describe the powerbook as if its a fashion accessory...nevermind that it's faster, smaller, and better than comparably priced PC laptops. Annoying.

    Yeah, but read this...

This is pretty much why Apple has a shot at defining the user experience more so than any other company ('cept maybe Sony - but even Sony has to rely on Windows)... This is huge coming from PC fanatics...

    -----------

Well, the thing is that when we started this column, we were all ready to do one of those 'Mac geeks are smug b******* who are blinded by cool design and their lust for Steve Jobs' pieces. But the problem is, we've come to realize that maybe we're actually a bit jealous.

If you gave us a brand-new Pentium 3 notebook that was less than an inch thick, rated for five hours of battery life, had a screen bigger than John's television set, and was better looking than any other notebook on the market, we would be screaming from our rooftops. So as much as we would like to, we just can't bring ourselves to dismiss the Titanium

    ---------------

Oh. and why do they insist on calling us Mac fanatics? Whats up with that? Just because we understand the innate superiority of one product over another and don't budge from that...that makes us fanatics?

I think it really means that we are just reasonable human beings and the PC fanatics are just stupid.

    (hows that for fanaticism?)

    Fanatics

They call us fanatics because we are passionate about our systems. It comes from the idea that being a Mac user is practically a religion. It almost is, too. The misconception is that everyone is like that to some degree. We just have more claims to make (our computers are not only fast, they are easy to use and look good) and we are always the focus. Everyone is always picking on the Mac so all the Mac users are constantly defending it. It makes people think that WE are picking the fight (although that is increasingly more often the case as we get annoyed with our PC-laden surroundings). Even they do it, though. Everyone feels some obligation to defend what they spent alot of money on or what is their favourite toy in their toy box. It is natural and I am glad to be on the Mac side. PErhaps that pride is what makes it a religion.

    Just some thoughts,

    LCD screen

What is their problem with the image degredation? That happens with LCD screens and Apple doesn't make it. As I recall, Apple has the same LCD supplier as Dell and they have very popular machines. I know that it is a Mac but asking for literally 110% is still 10% more than possible. How can we get more out of a screen than it has to begin with?

Correct me if I am wrong but this is not unique to Apple,

    the hack at PC Magazine

I was definitely a little annoyed at the article. Forget about the fact that Apple once again created a product that will set the standard for laptops. Forget about that fact that the Titanium Powerbook is really a marvel, considering its size and everything it is able to do. Lets look over the fact that for 2500 dollars you can have a mac whose PC equivalent would cost a few thousand dollars more. And lets ignore the fact that PC manufacturers now have another product to imitate poorly.
Lets complain about a 12.568790 degree vertical shift. Lets complain about our laps getting 'warm'.
No offense buddy, but go back to covering computer shows in Topeka.

    It's not our fault

PC users have this strange belief that because we love our Mac's we are blinded by it. Problem is I know heaps of PC users who bought a Mac and became fanatics. It's the funny thing about great products, you tend to love them instead of just use them.
