After announcing it in mid-January, Digidesign is now shipping an update to its audio workstation software, Pro Tools 5.1, which brings major enhancements to editing, session navigation, MIDI sequencing, plug-in processing, and session interchange capabilities.

Announced at Winter NAMM 2001 show, Digidesign's Pro Tools 5.1 brings integrated multichannel mixing, panning and processing with support for all standard multichannel mixing formats including LCR, Quad, LCRS, 5.1, 6.1 and 7.1. It supports stereo and multichannel tracks, multiple output destinations, flexible signal routing, RTAS plug-ins on TDM systems, improved TDM plug-in processing, enhanced MIDI sequencing, remote Control of Pro Tools with 9-pin devices, and video import from Avid systems with either AVoption or AVoption|XL as well as other editing and navigation enhancements.

    PT Free too?

I really hope that they release this as an update to ProTools Free.

PT Free is really great and if they kept in sync with the latest releases, then when many of the users who aspire to a full Pro Tools system can update, they will have no issues with using the full versions capabilities.

I, for one, applaud Digidesign for allowing users to download a free version. I just hope (and wish!) that they release a PT Free 5.1 version.

    Pretty please. :)

    Mac OS X?

Ha, Ha. Wouldn't that be keen.

We are probably not looking at anything Protools until later this year (like December, if we are lucky).

Until then its Digital Performer 3.0, which supports OMF, so you can import your files into ProTools when they have an OS X compatible version .... or something convoluted like that...

    OSX? In your dreams

I can virtually guarantee, although I have no inside info, that you won't see PT on MacOS X for two or three years. Avid may in fact just ask people to move to Win2k/Whistler if they need to move platforms.

This, by corollary, means that Apple will be shipping boxes that will install OS9.x with no need for OSX for years to come, unless the compatibility mode is PowerPC-transition quality (i.e. utterly transparent).

    RE: PT 5.1 free (???)

You must be joking - no way Digi will kill their cash cow.
As for moving to win2K or ANY other M$ platform - "put that idea in your *** (sacred place)"
After using audio on M$ platforms I have to admit that Apple's is like a rock compered to any of their s***t (no other word could be used)
I am not longing for MacOsX or any other platform/Os change as per se if IT DOES NOT BRING DIRECT benefits.
Currently I do not see where Os would benefit AUDIO production!

the protools 5.x MUST change by itself to demand anything more from Os.
This Os(eXen) screaming and trolling is quite childish and in most cases unjustified as well as just plain stupid.
Most drawbacks are elsewhere in the sw NOT in carbon or non carbon versions. Of course these bells and whistles paves a way for ... (say a specific feature etc).
In the case of PT we have a 10 years of LEGACY which draws the sw backwards.
We will have to wait for PT 6 for those who are wanting everything X. My estimate some time next yea announced and some time a year aftėr that delivered.

(have you noticed that delivery times in audio/video industry are 1 year later than promised? Digi inculded 100%)

digi has a reputation of "leading the way" when it comes to being late in delivering
i wouldn't hold my breath for an OS X version any time soon
and yes, just __what would the benefits be???

    *sigh*

Check you're fine print first cats.. DigiDesign has said on numerous occasions that they'll be reading for OS X when it ships.

The Mac is ProTool's core market and they know that. DigiDesign isn't a stupid company by any stretch, and the likelyhood that they'd say "Well, 9 is finished and we can't be bothered with X, so let's focus on Windows" or anything even close to that is just stupid.

Intake facts, then process, then talk.. not the other way around.

all the high and mighty posters..... i hear audio on OS X sucks donkey dohnuts..... really. this is from several audio companies. both hardware and software. its probably why there is such a big stink about soundblaster for the mac. it would be net is midi were integrated more into the OS like i heard X will be, mapping functions to the assortment of usb devices coming out (map my brush size and opacity to a slider and what not. i am just talking dreams here, right? hehe. maybe. anyways......i dont know what i am talking about.

    OMS in OSX

I imagine the audio in OS X will be exactly the same as it is under the current Mac OS. As long as you've got enough physical RAM installed you'll have no problems running any audio apps. Most audio apps require that you disable virtual memory on the current Mac OS, just because the mac's VM is so lame (although it's got better from OS 8.5 onwards). As OS X has a vastly improved virtual memory manager compared to what we've been used to on the mac in the past, I doubt OS X will be any worse for audio than the current Mac OS is. It'll just be a case of adding a little extra RAM so it doesn't start using the hard drive as memory.

The main thing that concerns me is OMS, even when a future version of protools offers full OS X compatability, without OMS it could be hard to integrate with the software synths I use for 90% of the instruments in my tunes.

I do think whatever happens good or bad from an audio standpoint when OS X initially comes out, all problems will be resolved as quickly as posible and we've always got the choice of creating a dual boot system as a temporary messure until OS X native OMS comes out and all the major software companies port their software to OS X.
