Adobe Photoshop Elements is a new, $100 mid-range photo editing application geared towards prosumers. Among the application's features are more than 95 filters, a streamlined process for preparing images for the Web, and the ability to directly order prints of images from the Web. Photoshop Elements will ship in the second quarter and will include a $30 rebate for owners of PhotoDeluxe, Photoshop LE, or competing products.

    Drive sales?

I don't get it, why will OSX drive upgrades? 79% of all Macintosh computers shipped are still in use, we don't tend to upgrade our Mac's - partly 'cos they cost so much, and partly because they are so reliable. The wintel alliance was built on a mutual push for upgrades, Mac's aren't part of that cycle. Yes OSX is great, but I'll look forward to seeing it on my present Mac when my regular apps are carbonised, or when I really *need* to upgrade anyway.

    Wrong article

Althouh I think the above comments refer to a different article, I am going to respond anyway.

I do not agree with the idea that Apple needs to have OS X drive up hardware sales in order to survive. Mac hardware will drive hardware sales to current Mac users. For example, I will be installing OS X on my existing machines in March, but I do not plan to buy new hardware until new dual processor machines are available in 3rd or 4th quarter. Some Mac users have Macs that are over 3 years old running pre Mac OS 9 versions of the Mac OS; OS X may encourage some of them to upgrade, but many will stick with what they have.

However I do think that OS X will help increase hardware sales. OS X makes the Mac a lot more appealling to Windows and Linux users. If they want OS X, they will need to buy a Mac. I expect OS X will get a lot of free publicity for Apple which directly or indirectly will help influence consumers that Apple has a very viable alternative for the Wintel world.

When Apple starts pre-installing OS X on Macs, their may also be a buying surge because many people have expressed that they are holding off their previously planned Mac purchases until then.

    Let's get back on track

Look, this is a place to comment on "Photoshop Elements", a package targeted toward "prosumers". Sounds like the BS driven world of Wintel is in iminent danger of taking over Adobe. I suggest they also consider targeting the "moridiot" and "incompexpert" segments. w*** away, Adobe.

    Prosumers?

Oh...please, for the love of God...please tell me that "prosumers" is a typo. Please...for my sanity, and everyone else's.

I'm so tired of the tech industry talking to itself. I expect it from Microsoft. But when it starts to creep into Adobe, I become worried.

    PS LE vs. Elements

Anyone have any opinions on what advantages this wouls have over PS LE, which is the same price? Just some marketing and wizard-like features ("Import Digital Photos," "Redeye reduction," etc). I ask because we are considering replacing the horrible PaintShop Pro on my company's NT's (sorry for the platform, not my decision). Buying full PS for all those machines is out of the question. I would think that LE would allow a smoother transition to full PS UI, but does one have compelling features over the other?

based on PS 5.5 or 6.0?

I wonder if PS Elements is based on PS 6.0 or 5.5. I also wonder if Elements (or LE) exploit Altivec, OSX, and dual processors as PS 6.0 can. Anybody?

    Prosumer is a word

The word "prosumer" has long been used to refer to, say, video gear that's a step up from what you'd buy at Circuit City. Not quite pro-level, but better than consumer. An example would be Canon's XL1 and GL1 DV camcorders. They have features you'll find in pro equipment such as 3 CCDs, but they start at $2500, not $25,000, and they use DV, not a pro format like Digital Betacam. I see no problem with using the same terminology to refer to software market segments.
