SuSE's US operation today laid off roughly three-fourths of its staff, paring the unit down to a skeleton crew of 12. (The PowerPC version of SuSE Linux 7.1 was scheduled to be released in March.)

    Again...

Linux is dead. Mac OS X will eat the rest of it.

    Yeah right...

Linux will *never* be dead. Don't get me wrong, I'm looking forward to MacOS X just as much as the Macophile. But, Linux is free, open source so it will always be there because there will always be someone to come along and start working on it (several thousand currently).

I can't wait for MacOS X, but I can't believe the idiots here that always post that Linux is dead. Nothing could be further from the truth. Linux can do things that MacOS X will never do and wasn't designed to do (like work in embedded systems, or strip down the OS for ultimate server performance, etc.).

    Darwin will never fly

I'm a mac guy who runs OSX (while posting this actually), linux, and FreeBSD.
Darwin will never make inroads with anyone but the few OSX users/developers who actually care what is going on under the hood. There are many reasons for this...
    -no official x86 support
-no bundled GUI (you can compile X but it's extra work)
-no application support in binary form (forget any licensed software like BRU)
    -relatively little developer support.
-no ports collection!... and so on...

Darwin is a curiousity and a tool for OSX developers. It is not a replacement for Linux (even on Mac hardware), nor is it a replacement for FreeBSD.
I will not be attempting to compile Darwin on my X86 boxes when there are polished and up to date Linux and BSD distros available.

    But where's the meat?

The linux OS is a great OS. But, my friends, the real problem is, since its open source, the profitability directly related to its sale is miniscule. So essentially, the only money being made is from others hyping its use and adoption. The hundreds (or thousands ?) of people working on its development is merely for a labor of love. This is still a business, no matter which way you slice it. Not too long ago, Apple was being pressured to open source the entire Mac OS, with the mantra "Open Source is the wave of the future..." Profit is still what makes the world go round. The internet implosion is only beginning. There is no such thing as "The new economy", and it is being shown to be just flash and cash. And many called the 80's the decade of greed and scams, what a joke!

    TO:"Darwin will never...

TO :Darwin will never fly: Who knows what tomorrow will bring? Support for Darwin on Intel? MIPS? DEC Alpha? Not from Apple maybe, but from somebody. The UNIX revolution is a good thing. When people try LINUX or (shortly) Mac OS X, it will show them the inadequacies of Windoze. I know I can't get through a Win95 session of more than an hour without at least one re-boot.

    Linux is being ruined

by "market analysts" and other financial types. The Linux World Expo? IT SUCKS!! It USED to be a cool expo, but the recent few have been filled with marketing drones wandering aroun saying "Have your people call my people and we'll see how much money we can make with this linux thing..." and face it, folks.. that's the fact. Look at other news reports about Linux World Expo. Everyone is trying to cash in on it. FREE SOFTWARE (read:NO generated income) does not pay the bills. This "show me the source! Free the code!" c*** has given an excuse to the Hotline kiddies to say "Noo! ALL software should be free, so give me Photoshop, B*****!"

    Linux is NOT being ruined

People who think Linux is about making a profit is missing the point of the open source movement. It's not about getting programs like Photoshop for free-- that's considered a vertical-market program and Adobe has every right to make a profit from it. Open Source is about making low common denominator software free. The reasoning is this; everyone with a computer has the same basic set of software programs installed, so why are we paying for this over and over again?? Examples include; the operating system obviously, but also email, web browsers, word processing, spreadsheets, and the like.

Linux companies will come and go (I too wonder how you make a profit selling free software), but Linux is here to stay. And, whether you believe it or not, that's a good thing-- if for nothing else because choice/competition is always a good thing.

Oh, BTW, I agree with the forth poster that stated that Darwin will never make inroads against Linux except for MacOS X developers.

    Darwin and Linux

The latest release of Darwin is available ready for x86 direct from Apple. They have not put as much into it as they have for the PPC, but it is there with fat bnaries and everything.

I feel like I keep having to remind people that OS X has really not been released yet. Apple is not going to assign any of their OS X developers to officially work on Darwin until after they OS X out the door. I expect they will wait until the excitement from MacWorld NY calms down before making any public announcements, but they will start improving Darwin soon after March.

Linux is not dead; that is absurd. The problem has been that there are too many active Linux companies fighting over a small marketshare. Just like any market, if it becomes oversaturated, some of them are going to fail and go out of business, but that actually strengthens the position of the remaining Linux distributors. Red Hat is one that will survive because they have good contracts with some big hardware manufacturers. Overall, the use of Linux is growing and it is going to continue to grow.

    Only US branch reduced

When checking out the SuSE web site, you will see that just the US branch gets downsized. The main European office has
    still a decent size...
