Gamecenter: Tropico, ESRB Ratings

updated 07:11 pm EST, Tue February 6, 2001

C|Net's Gamecenter, which will close for good at the end of this week, has posted a few notes regarding a recent visit to PopTop Software to check out Tropico, the company's Caribbean dictatorship strategy game for the Mac and PC. While likely not a common scenario for every publisher, the article comments on the way in which the company will receive an ESRB rating for the game:

I thought...that the ratings board actually plays a game to give it a rating. Apparently not. PopTop had to fill out a questionnaire and make a five-minute video showing the worst parts of the game. That's what the ESRB looks at to determine the rating a game gets. To me this just reinforces what a joke the whole ratings system is.
