Apple quietly drops 500MHz Cube price

As noted in our forums yesterday, the Apple Store has quietly dropped the price on the 500-MHz G4 Cube by $300 to $1999 (128MB/30GB) and has added a high-end configuration, which includes 256MB of RAM, a 40GB drive, and an ATI Radeon Graphics card for $2399.

Stupid is as stupid does

c***, I really like the Cube. It is way cool. But dagnammit, the bugger is not worth the prices that Apple puts on it. I know that there are lots of people out there that have money to burn, but I don't and won't for something that is as over priced as the Cube.

The Cube costs less to manufacture, even with a 40 gig drive and 256 megs of Ram than the base iMac does. And I am cool with Apple making profit, but there has to be a limit and its frustrating that my fellow Mac Heads won't protest like I do on such an outragious abuse as the cost of this device.

Its like the G4 Tower. Great Box. Love it. And though lots of people here say you can not compare Apple with other Computer makers, the real truth is that you can and you should. At the $1,200 level in the Wintel world you get a CD-RW AND a DVD-Rom Drive AND a 60 GIG hard drive.

Frickin A, Apple, Wake up! Get off your overpriced lilly laurels and give us a machine that is worth what you are charging.

MORITORIUM ON NEW MAC PURCHASES SHOULD LIVE UNTIL APPLE GIVE US TRUE VALUE IN THE MARKET PLACE!!!!!

Prices

Apple doesn't suck, but the over charging the customers sure does. Maybe the new Attorney General will investigate Apple - the true monopoly!

Oh, but that is why Steve Jobs held that fundraiser for that ugly b**** Horlery to keep the DOJ from freaking Apple like they did to poor M$!

New Cubes

All I want is a $1799 500Mhz G4 cube with a CDRW. This cannot possibly be a difficult price target to hit - although I strongly disagree with the first comment on this thread - there is no way in h*** that the cube is cheaper to manufacture than the imac.

how to sell them

Let's get serious about cube sales. Keep the low end cube at 450mhz and offer it at $899. Anybody buying one of these is going to buy the flat panel display, that's were the money is. Who in their right mind would by a cube and then put a freakin huge ugly display next to it. Even my wife says we would have to get the flat panel with the cube. Sacrifice some profit on one end to make it up on the other. If you can't afford the display that goes with the cube whats the point in buying the cube anyway. It's supposed to be the state of the art computer and people realize that and don't buy it to put some huge ugly display with it. It's all in the marketing.

Apple overcharging? NO

Apple does not overcharge. They do have one of the highest profit margins, but remember all the cool software they produce costs development money. iTunes and iMovie are both FREE and both quality apps.

Also, it's not quite the same, but there are some people who buy a Lexus, when they could buy a Toyota for $15,000 less, yet they are almost identical. Mac's and PC's are different. Face it.

Watch for Refurb. Cubes

There were refurbished 450 Mhz. Cubes on the Apple Store website before Christmas... for $1,299... I'm typing this on one of them... and loving it!

I'm waiting for...

my guess...

new iMacs are coming out this month. it is very possible that the high-end iMacs will be using G4s.

if iMacs are using G4s and the Cube is supposed to be a 'superior' product (or an 'upper-class' product), then something will need to be done to the Cube to help it retain its status.

so, I'm wondering if we will see a new Cube using the new 133MHz motherboard, with either a 6xx or 7xx G4e chip in it. I'd love to get one of these if they became available. I'd love it even more if Apple made the Formac Proformance4 AGP 4x card available as a BTO option to support 2 monitors in my choice of VGA, DVI or ADC (check out Formac's web site for more info on this card). adding this card would make the Cube one h*** of a great product.

all remaining to add would be the ability to add a second G4e for DP computing ;-)

I currently develop FileMaker Pro solutions, a FileMaker Pro developer product, edit my own web site and plan to work in music. MOTU is releasing a new FireWire audio I/O solution that will work great with the Cube. Nikon is releasing a new 4000dpi FireWire film scanner (with ICE3 technology) that will suit by photo archive wishes very well. Fujitsu has released a new FireWire multi-GB MO drive.

for me personally, most of my requirements are becoming available as we speak. just maybe, the Cube was ahead of its time; but what else is new when referring to Apple??

by the way, Apple claims to have so much excess Cube stock that it will take until the end of March to clear it. I smell big discounts coming very soon for the Cube in face of the new version's release.

They Asked For It

I'll never forget the Macworld that debuted the Cube for the first time. There was so much excitement, cheers, gaping mouths, and then they displayed the price on the big screen. You could practically hear the enthusiasm hit the floor with a thud. I love the Cube. I'm amazed by it. I wish I had one. But good lord...I just bought a new G4 tower with plenty more features for practically the same price. Their price scales are all out of wack with this product.

There is more to this...

The reason the G4 Cube is overpriced is not because of the specs, but because they have to pay a lot for the guy who designed it. Alright, the Cube is a basic shape, but for him to use the materials he did and modify the little details into a work of art, that took skill. Plus, even with the pricing now, Apple is not really making much of a profit.. what would happen if they lowered the price to match the iMac? Who would buy the iMac if for the same price they could get a G4 Cube? There's business strategy involved in pricing.... not just specs and manufacturing costs.

The Cube Sucks

Let's face it, folks... the Cube is one of the worst products Apple has ever come out with. If you're one of the people who would pay the premium that they're selling this completely underpowered and underwhelming machine for, then I've got 3 bridges to sell you in New Mexico!!

I can't wait to see the Cube fade away into nothingness as Apple pulls it from their lineup. It's absolutely embarrassing to have this product, and to have this product be so damn expensive.

Steve Jobs has failed again, just as he has in so many other ways.

Cube pricing

I just bought a 450MHz Cube. I wanted one since last summer but it was the price drop that made up my mind. I wonder what sales would be like if the Cube had been introduced at these prices; that "overpriced" reputation is hard to shake.

Since I work at a college I get an educational discount, though I had to pay sales tax at the Apple Store so that wiped out most of the savings. But I upgraded to the 30GB hard drive and the Radeon card and still got the system for less than $1,600, which I think is a pretty good price. (It's half what I paid for a 512K Mac in 1985, anyway.)

I ordered on Thursday and it arrived the following Tuesday. I'm absolutely thrilled with it. Sure, I could have bought a G4 minitower for what I paid; I also could have bought a $499 piece of Wintel garbage and spent the rest on gin. I could drive a Hyundai to Wal-Mart, too. The Cube isn't for everyone; no computer is. It's a perfect machine for me; I don't need PCI expansion at home and don't really want something as large as the G4 minitower.

I wonder if there's this sort of screaming and wailing when Jaguar introduces a new car and it turns out to be more expensive than a Camry. "Jaguar is just greedy!!"

Oh, and I also put a huge 17-inch Apple display next to mine...

Cubes and CD-RW

I don't think you'll ever see a CD-RW in a cube. They generate way too much heat when burning.

With both USB and FireWire, it's very easy (and can even be quite inexpensive) to add an external burner.

Who buys

As a G4 Render Farm, their a great. Office Real Estate is by the sq. foot, and a comparably powered Cube takes less space than a G4 box.

Personally, I think the lack of "native" firewire devices killed the Cube. (I'm not talking about the underpowered "bridge" firewire). For video editing, we require 100 to 200 gigs of space and I've got to tell you, the "bridge" firewire drive suck. Thus for editing, we stick with the box and using internal ATA66 drives which are fast, cheap, and outta control...

If we could get comperable performance out of firewire drives, then the cube would make sense for FCP video editing.

If you don't like the cube, then DON'T FREAKIN' BUY IT!!! The Cube is an amazing product, and I think has a nice niche as an exclusive-style product. That's what it is, nothing more. Yes, you can get more value for the dollar with a tower-- just as you can with a Hyundai over a Mercedes. So go buy a Hyundai! It's no reason to bash Mercedes owners.

Do I wish they lower the price? Sure I do-- but I also wish they'd lower prices on a Mercedes too! ;-)

Cube

The cube could be such a great hit for Apple.....if it were priced like the headless iMac that it is!! Apple is so stupid for pricing it out of it's own market. A 1200 cube would give people the chance to own a 17" Mac system for only 1600 or so.

Get this, Apple thinks that if someone wants a monitor other than the 15" c*** on the iMacs, they should have to pay at least $2000!!! WTF??? And they wonder why their sales are poor? Consumers don't like small monitors, when will Apple figure this out!

So we are left with the need for a headless iMac, even though Apple has the perfect headless iMac in their product lineup. They got greedy and pride themselves with the cube's ultra-high profit margin. But they are so stupid they never realized that VOLUME helps both profit AND market share! God Apple makes me so mad sometimes!

Apple and the public

What is Apple's target audience? And who is Apple now?

Is it possible that Apple is trying to stretch into too many areas of the over all price structure of this modern economy? I think it might. Look at other industries. BMWs cannot be had for the price of a Corolla. If BMW sold a car for under 20 grand, it would not meet the standards of other BMWs, plain and simple. Then look at Bang & Olufsen andPioneer. Which brings me to the spectrum between iMacs and G4 cubes. Why is Apple trying to hit all the bases?

It cuts into Apple's picture in the minds of the public. Positioning? No wonder there's complaining about G4 Cube pricing, among other things.

marketing experts?

I'm amazed by the # of self-proclaimed marketing experts. You have no hard facts to go on yet you know what Apple should do. I think they simply blew it. And now they are trying to unload as many units without loosing their shirts. Maybe the next incarnation will be a better seller.

And regarding the car comment--did you forget that the MacOS is it's own set of roads. If apple only made BMW's, then there world would only have BMW's. Apple wants to offer a full spectrum, otherwise you wouldn't have much choices, not that you really do now.

19" Apple Studio Display

A $1,200 17" Apple LCD would be a nice addition to the line-up, allowing for someone to reasonably afford an LCD display a little more useful than the too-small 15" LCD. However, even $1200 is a little pricy considering the great 19" monitors out there. How about a 19" Apple FD Trinitron Monitor, give it a premium price for the pretty graphite case. $600 seems in line with current apple pricing, and I'd much rather spend $600 on a good 19" rather than the $400-$500 (depending on rebate) Apple charges for the $17 monitor.

Another tired BMW analogy

Look at other industries.
BMWs cannot be had for the price of a Corolla.
If BMW sold a car for under 20 grand, it would not meet the standards
of other BMWs, plain and simple.

BMW sells the Mini Cooper for about $18,000. It's not a "BMW", but
all the money goes to and from BMW anyway. The car does meet BMW standards,
at least as much as much as $18k will get you. This is what Apple
tried to do with the clone market but failed, and no company is going to
allow Apple to shaft them again like they did to PowerComputing, Motorola,
and UMAX. IMHO, the Mac market is still suffering from Motorola's payback to
Apple.

Then look at Bang & Olufsen andPioneer.

Look at Sony instead for a way to combine quality of product
and quantity of profits.

Which brings me to the spectrum between iMacs and G4 cubes.
Why is Apple trying to hit all the bases?

It's called diversification - successful companies don't put all their eggs
in one basket (or market). Apple should indeed follow BMW and come up with
a business plan that is immune to the whims of any one computing market.

Market Experts?

Actually, I am a marketing expert. We often compare other products in other industries to compare demographic interests.

If Apple continues to market their iMacs, the Cube will continue to struggle because of lack of identity with a demographic niche. It was cited that the Cube's sleek design was part of its pricing, and that may be. But it's difficult to defend that against lack of practicality. The market won't continue to buy something for its beauty alone.

TAM--cube

Hiya, I'm one of the lucky folks who grabbed a twentieth anniv mac at a fire sale price a few years ago. With it, I now have my desk back, gone is the big box and crt monitor. The G3 upgrade is not as fast as a G4, and the screen is now on the small size, but cube and 15"LCD will probably replace the TAM at my home in a year. I just got an LCR monitor at work, and again have desk space!

You forgot to mention the super fast Celeron processor in those E-machines. If you want to match the quality of the G4 tower you had beter go up to the $1,999 PIII or $2,299 PIV.

I don't know about you, but I would not want to spend $1200 on a Celeron even at 700-800 MHz.

Cube should cost $500

The marketing expert btw is correct, well I agree anyway, as I'm also in marketing.
There is one thing in my mind holding the Cube back, that a RAEDON or NVidia card. The RAGE is just c*** if you like to game. I use a G4 Tower because it allows multible displays, a better graphics card without buying from the Apple Store (an idea I hate), an internal Zip (not essential though) and multible Hard drives.
Now I will buy a Cube for home as it is smaller, is fast, ands is quiet. We ran one here for a day and you really notice the noise when you can here the whirling of an iBook on the other side of the room.
I think people expected the Cube to be cheap as it is smaller than the 400 tower. Makes sense. Smaller = cheaper. Right?
The Cube with a flat display are works of art. People come to your house and talk about it. Just like a great couch or a hand crafted dining table.
Now over priced is the Airport base station. For me to deck out my G4 and iBook with card and a base station is over $1000 Australian. If they can find a way to half the Base station then it would be very good.

The Price difference

The extra memory and larger hard disk just mask the huge price difference they are charging from the 450MHz and 500MHz.

$1499 for 450MHz, 64mb, 20gig
$1999 for 500MHz, 128mb, 40gig

Now work out the price of memory and hard disk space and you can see what kind of price they are putting on 50MHz. Its rather high.

What I want in a Cube !

Hey ... I have been thinking about this one for a while ... I want an updated cube with say the new ATI all in wonder card (not sure if there is a mac version) which can play TV as well as capture TV (ala Tivo). Bump the Hard drive upto 60gb ... at last ship a 17" TFT display ... and get Jobs' team to produce iVideo and i'll be clearing away my Sony TV, Video and PS2 for a top notch home entainment system ... now that is Convergence ... or as Steve would call it the Digital Hub ... actually maybe add in a Superdrive :o) too....

Ahhhh Dreams ... maybe just maybe...

The Cube has been bashed to death, but geeeeez, it's a freakin 8" square computer for judas priest sake!

Some a you Mac freaks don't act like the way ya should. but to be fair....

it were cheaper and came with a superdrive... with 256/ 60gb I'd take it at 1500 - with plain old fashioned DVD it should be 999. Then I'd buy two.

The sheer beauty and the amazing feat of it's design is worth the price, it's sooooo small.

Apple Prices Outrageous!

Are Apple products beautiful, sturdy, state of the art workhorses? h*** yes! Are they outrageously priced...YOUBETCHA! They want marketshare, but continue to sock it to all of us loyal macophiles. I'm still waiting for 60GB HD's on all machines, 256MB RAM standard, high end videoprocessors standard, increased VRAM, and last, but by no mean least...1GHZ G4 processors! Then if they want to stiff me for an outrageous amount of money, I'll think about it!

Apple needs lower prices

I agree that Apple charges too much for the Cube. It is a beautiful machine, but for what you get, it is too highly priced. I would like to have one, however, I shall stick with my blue and white G3 until I am satisfied that the G4 towers are at a functioning point with their SuperDrive that all is in good working order. In fact, I will wait until the higher performance chips are available in dual processor form. If the Cube which costs 2000 for the lower performance 450 with a 17" display, or 2500 with a 15" LCD, comes down or better yet the 500 comes down then maybe. It seems like a lot of folks feel this way, and I think Apple loses a lot of sales. I think their marketing needs to aim at a considerably larger population, and endeavor to become the computer "for the rest of us" again. Porsche had their 914 as well as their 911. There are bigger markets to be had, by people who need an easy to use, pleasant but potent and up to date computer. Their advertising could aim at a lot more markets. This last price drop is just a start.

The New G4 Cube

When the first five color iMac came out, i was there. A 266 G3, 32mb of RAM for $1200. 18 months later i wanted to upgrade. So i went out and bought an iBook SE for college. So now i have a 466 G3 with 64mb of RAM with firewire. Now, i want a desktop Mac. The cube is exactly what i want. I need to have enough qualifications and upgrades from one computer to another, otherwise what's the use? So, i want a flat screen (even the 15" is fine with me), a G4 over 500MHz, and a CD-RW drive built-in. My other concern is whether a firewire external drive would be faster than an internal one from Apple? I also need at least a 60GB hard drive, since i've recently gotten myself heavily into video editing. My needs:
Over 500MHz G4
256mb of Ram
Flat screen monitor
32mb Video ram card (nvidia or radeon)
60GB hard drive
CD-RW built in
All of that in a cube for $1500, and i wouldn't mind. Maybe even $1800. Then the monitor needs to come down in price so that the entire system is under $2200. Sound good?

Don't ya just get sick of these guys who want all the innovation of the Mac for nothing. Get with it!! You get what you pay for.............period. If you don't want to pay the price, get out of the market. If you want a $1200 Mac, get an iMac.That's what $1200 buys you in the Mac world. If these machines were all $999 the whiners would start capping on the colors or something else. Some people just can't be satisfied. My advice to these fiscally challenged folk..........buy a Gateway and go whine in their forum. Thank You

cube price vs. iMacs

The person who said "there is no way in h*** that the cube is cheaper to manufacture than the imac" is forgetting that the iMac includes a screen. I would expect Cube+screen to cost more than an iMac but not a Cube in its own. At a more realistic price, a Cube could be on my shopping list. But Apple has a big price gap between the iMac and the tower (if you compare like with like) and a Cube at a more rational price would fill this gap.
