IBM yesterday unveiled its Ultrastar 36Z15 drive, which matches the 15,000 rpm speed of Seagate's fastest models, but offers better seek times. Seagate, however, claims that it will soon leapfrong IBM: "By the time that IBM actually steps into the ring and starts shipping these drives, we'll have introduced our next-generation product, and we'll be back on top in terms of the specs they've quoted."

Keep in mind that the heat and noise that these things produce will probably make them more popular in servers than in desktops.

heat and noise is *supposed* to be comparable to that of the 10K drives. I'm more interested in what segate plans to release. HD uncompressed video is just around the corner and that requires 150mb/sec for just one stream of video. hope they make bigger drives!

It's when you do things like optimize a full drive or were to write "1's" in a steady stream, or uncompressed graphics, that they tend to get hot(ter) but my 10k Quantum Atlas is fine in B&W. And a new Atlas 10k III is due just around the corner (running $50 off on the 18GB thru end of March).

I'd love to see what StorageReview.com has to say when they get all the new drives and line them up. That could be months though.
