WarCraft III cut to four races, release date

updated 05:40 pm EST, Thu February 1, 2001

Blizzard Entertainment announced today that it has finalized the four races for WarCraft III: Reign of Chaos, its role-playing strategy game for the Mac and PC. The final list includes Humans, Orcs, Night Elves and Undead, with the previously included Demon race demoted to a non-player character (NPC) race in the game. In addition, the company announced that the Mac version of WarCraft III is expected in early 2002 with the PC version in late 2001.

Humans. The noble defenders of humanity continue to fight for survival in a world plagued by darkness and war. The humans concentrate their skills in the realms of martial discipline and technology. They alter their environment, use armor, weapons and machines; and domesticate animals. Human units include the Footman, Knight, Elven Priest, Elven Sorceress, Dwarven Mortar Team and Dwarven Rifleman. Human heroes include the Paladin, Arch-Mage, Half-Elven Ranger and the Dwarven Mountain King.

Orcs. The savage Orcs have rallied once again and stand ready to face the terrible demons who corrupted their society long ago. The Orcs rely on brute strength and melee combat. Units used by the Horde include the Grunt, Troll Head Hunter, Wyvern Rider, Shaman and Troll Witch Doctor. Examples of Orc heroes are the Farseer, Blade Master, Tauren Chieftain and Shadow Hunter.

Night Elves. These mysterious, shadowy beings are one of the eldest races of the world. They have emerged from their centuries-long seclusion to defend the world from the coming apocalypse. Units include the Ent, Archer, Sentinel, Assassin, Treant and Hippogryph. Elven heroes are comprised on the Keeper of the Grove, Demon Hunter, Priestess of the Moon and Arch-Druid.

Undead. The plague-ridden undead army known as the Scourge has come from the frozen wastelands of the north to topple civilization in its darkest hour. The undead Scourge is renowned for its ability to generate units on the battlefield. Corpses of fallen foes are very important to the Undead. Several abilities and spells rely on corpses as components for their spells. Undead units include Dredge, Ghoul, Banshee, Necromancer, Gargoyle and Frost Wyrm. Heroes include the Death Knight, Lich, Dread Lord and Abomination.

    Delayed Mac release?

I thought they had planned to do a joint-release....guess they stiffed us again. I shouldn't complain though, since they actually ported the game to us Mac users at all. =)

    At least they ported

Warcraft and Warcraft II sold a TON of copies on the mac. We should NOT be settling for "at least they ported to mac at all". They DID s**** us by delaying the mac release. I'm annoyed.

    The same policy

Blizzard has always insisted on making quality games. They work on the PC version of a product, and hire another company to do the Mac one as simultaneously as possible. In the past, this caused the Mac version to be delayed by a long time, as Blizzard's quality control is extremely picky and they refuse to release a sub-standard product just to get it out quickly. Recently, they bought out the company that does the ports (Future Point) so that they could work together more efficiently. This is why the delay for Diablo 2 was only a couple of weeks. Chances are that all future Blizzard products will also have a similar, barely-noticeable, delay. They don't want to make it sound like they are promising that, though -- they've learned the hard way not to make promises about release dates. So that explains the later expected Mac date. But considering that the PC version definitely won't be out by the end of the year, you shouldn't put too much faith in the dates they gave you here.

Warcraft and Warcraft II sold well on the Mac, but probably only about 5% as well as they did on the PC. It's not a valid business case to delay money-making version to wait on the one that barely pays for itself.

    This sucks!

I originally was PC person and I changed platforms for the stability of the Mac OS and because Blizzard supports Mac gaming. I'm in no way a gamer, because the Computer games I own all came from Blizzard Warcraft 1,2 Starcraft 1, Broodwars. BUT by big gripe is this. Why wasn't the damn game release in 2000 like it was slated to be released.

    THIS SUCKS

    Simultaneous Release

They never promised a simultaneous release, they have a now, in house development team for the Mac version. They work slightly behind the PC version for obvious reasons. However as stated by blizzard this summer, Warcraft III would not be a simultaneous release, at the worst they said, it will be a situation much similar to diablo 2, a three week delay. I'm a hardcore gamer, I attend LAN parties every week, however I did not buy a Mac for gaming, I bought it for the lack of hardware conflicts and the lack of conflicts between OS and hardware (owning the hardware and OS is a huge advantage) It's much more stable, I'll trade 3 weeks of waiting for that, I wouldn't complain that much...It may take a windows user 3 weeks just to fix a problem between windows and their hardware :)

    PC vs Mac Release Date

How much do you want to bet that WarCraft 3 will ship probably in December of 2001, and the Mac version in January 2002. (I can already see them showing it off at MWSF '02)

I think the Mac version is behind the PC version, but from what I have heard, it is not to far behind.
