Anyone who thought that OS 9.x would be extra is an idiot.

    hmmm...

what I want to know is whether one can install 9.1 separately from X, like on one's secondary, pre-G3 machine...maybe a sub-installer?

    9.0?????

Can I stick with 9.0 and install OS X 1.0 over it? I KNOW 9.0 drives ALL my peripherals OK-- OS X may be missing key drivers for a while.

    9.1 only

It is my understanding when OS X finally ships, it will require 9.1 for Classic apps. I do however believe that the version of 9.1 that is currently incompatible with OS X PB, will be tweaked to work with the shipping version of OS X.
    It should fly.

just curious, does anyone think apple is going to offer a discount for people who paid for the OSXPB?

    Expensive no more

Apple priced OS X higher than OS 9. Now it's become reasonable as they are indeed selling two OSes in one box. Just wonder if I can installer OS 9.1 alone.

    discount for pb buyers...

although they've not made any announcement, if you look at the math:

normal cost of apple os - $99
    cost of os x final - $129
    cost of os x beta - $30

i've seen whispers of pb purchasers getting the final for $99...and it all adds up doesn't it.

that being said, they never promised anything when i bought the beta, and i'm not going to scream and whine over $30, especially when so many of the things i didn't like about the pb have been addressed in newer builds.

    Discounts

I have read some news and it is possible that Apple would make the price of the OSX lower for people who bought the beta and sent feedback.
It seems that the first user would be paid back the price of the beta.
That sounds great ! I hope they would do so.

    OS X and peripherals?

Will I be able to use my USB printer, USB scanner, and ext. SCSI drive connected via PCI SCSI card with the version of OS 9.1 that comes with OS X.

Everything works under OS 9.1 now, but will the classic layer of OS X be able to control ext. hardware? The OS X PB could not.

Steve Jobs commented on the subject saying that OS X now supports USB printing and Airport etc... but was he referring to OS X native USB printing with OS X drivers, or did he mean that 9.1 could also print?

This will make a big difference in OS X sales if 9.1 classic just runs on screen and does not allow use of current peripherals.

    OS X and peripherals

Boot into OS 9.1 ( native) and you will be able to use all your peripherals just like you can now ( bootable)
Boot into OS X 1.0 and the only peripherals that will be available to your "classic" applications will be those that have OS X drivers. For example, if your SCSI card does not have OS X drivers, then you will not see that card under OS X from either native or classic apps. It HAS TO BE THAT WAY, or "Classic" would be able to crash the machine just like it always could.
