Tech: Yahoo! earnings, iPaqs in demand

updated 05:00 pm EDT, Wed April 11, 2001

Evening tech news: Yahoo! posted a loss of $11.5 million for the quarter, beating analysts' reduced expectations, but announced that it would be cutting 420 jobs (12% of its workforce); Motorola is considering selling some of its noncore businesses in order to raise cash after the company posted its first quarterly loss in 15 years yesterday; and Compaq has announced that it will boost production of its iPaq handheld, as the company struggles to fulfill 600,000 to 700,000 backorders for the highly demanded device.

    What about the monitors??

Apple still does not have an aeffective 21" monitor to fill th hole left by the 21 Studio Display that Schiller killed - or an answer to zero cross-platform sales because of the idiocy of the ADC display connector.

The lack of a 21 monitor is far more serious, as it means that roughly an additional $2,000 or every graphic workstation goes to SONY for purchase of a 21" and 17" monitors for a dual-screen configuration (as most artists use).

So, if they are looking at lower than expected earnings, they should not overlook that as well.

Maybe someday someone at Apple can pull their head out of a dark place and figure out a way to reinstate the 21" crt display.

    Focused on flat-panel

Apple is moving away from the CRT and is betting their imaging products on flat-panel displays. As they're used in more industries and products and supply rises, their cost will go down and become more commonplace in homes. Their use is already skyrocketing in businesses and high-end users and that popularity will spread to homes in the U.S. They're already quite popular in Asia and Europe.

    ADC adapter from Belkin

Harry: Belkin has announced that they will be producing an adapter for those silly ADC monitors. That's nothing but good news for Mac fans.

    What's with the iPaq?

The MIS-type are all ga-ga over it where I work. I still can't figure out why... It's overpriced, with very poor battery life. And with 32 MB, I don't see much use for the movie-playing feature. So what is it that attracts them to this piece of c***?

    The iPaq is awesome

Very poor battery life? Compaired to what? It's way ahead of the Palm IIIc. And unlike Palm, Compaq measures batter life in actual time units, not the "Two to four weeks under normal use". 8-12 hours dosen't seem that bad.

The main thing that pulled me away from Palm and to the iPaq was it's expansion. Why pay for a CDPD modem for both my laptop and handheld when I can just get one PCMCIA CDPD modem to share between them. Also, it is quite literially a PocketPC. WinCE shows some of these capabilities, but where the iPaq shines even above other CE handhelds is the ability to toss Linux on it. (And Compaq Research is working on this, not some little grass roots effort).

I agree, 32MB is small when compaired to the 2GB PCMCIA hard drive that works fine with it.

Oh, and it's decent color, even when viewed outside.

    Monitors

You forget, Apple has supported VGA since the first G3s. You can get a good 19" VGA display now for under $400. As for Motorola, they should sell their chip division to Apple. That way Steve can control what gets produced when.
