Alexander 1.0 is a new QuickTime authoring utility that allows users to insert and create interactive elements within QuickTime streams. It provides the ability to insert links, create customized players for your streams (with live chat features), and QT movies that can be updated by replacing a text file. I don't like this....

I know this is the current trend, but I really hate the idea of paying for my software like a subscription. Why can't I own the things I put on my hard drive? It didn't work for DIVX and I hope it doesn't work here.

Too bad, buecause I'm really excited about this program. But I won't touch it with a 10 foot pole if I'm going to have it costing me money each month (even if I DID use it every month)

    Not only subscription

Actually pricing _ends_ at $5/month. You can outright buy the thing at $30 until the end of this month. Or pay 12/quarter. There are several options which allow you to opt out when you like.

    Higher End Recurring Cost

CAD software in the high-ends often have "maintenance" fees per year per "Seat" of the program. This usually includes updates (bug/minor feature) and tech support.

Big companies go along with it because its a relatively "fixed" cost and when your business can loose millions of dollars per day when an engineer gets stuck, it becomes quite a bargain.

This is also migrating to/from ASP (Application Service Providers) where you lease software instead of purchasing the permissions to use a copy of it on any one computer. You never really "own" the program, the original authors "own" it, you are simply given permission to use it according to loosely defined and legally flimsy license agreements.
