Belkin may manufacture ADC-to-VGA adapter

updated 10:12 am EST, Fri January 26, 2001

Mac users interested in seeing an ADC-to-VGA adapter brought to market should call Sean Angus of Belkin at (800) 223-5546 to express interest in the product, according to one MacNN reader who spoke with Belkin and learned the company would make such an adapter if there was sufficient demand.

    esplain plees...

Perhaps some other MacNN readers would like MacNN editors to include a short explanation as to what Apple's ADC connector is and what the benefit of such an adaptor would be....

    Why???

Why would anyone need an ADC-to-VGA connector. If your video card has an ADC connector, then it should also have a VGA connector. I think what we really want is way to connect an ADC monitor to a video card that has either VGA or DVI.

    Because...

That way you could drive two VGA monitors with one video card.

    Duh.

    Here is why

Becasue I want to use one of those new monitors on a PowerBook. The monitor is ADC and my PB is VGA. Therefore I need a ADC to VGA adaptor.

    Two monitors? not quite

One cannot use two monitors from one ADC/VGA video card. Only one output is active at a time.

    misnomer?

Perhaps what MacNN means is a VGA-ADC adapter, and not an ADC-VGA adapter.

The Apple studio displays come with the ADC adapter on it, and as mentioned above, it would be nice to use it on a powerbook.

    Stick it on

Yeah I think thats what it is. Alot of G4 owners with the PCI graphics model cant use any new displays as the PCI only seemed to have VGA (I know mine does) so having a VGA to ACD or DVI would be very useful...

    Bad Nomenclature

As usual, bad nomenclature by the Mac press has caused large confusion. It is safe to assume that Belkin would not build an ADC to VGA adapter, they must mean a VGA-ADC adapter. Remember, when quoting the style of adapter you require, it is always host-to-peripheral; i.e., computer-to-device.

We've been polling interest for just such a product (though we believe the market is for a DVI-ADC adapter, that less interest exists for a VGA-ADC adapter, due to the hoigh component cost versus cost of Apple Displays.

PS: The contact number given on the main page is incorrect. The correct number is (800) 223-5546 (press 7, spell 'Sean', press #)

    BIIIG Mistake

The ADC stuff is the biggest marketing mistake Apple ever made.
We have 17 Apple TFT monitors running on Windblows machine's
Now they can only sell them to people who buy an overprices cube or a new G4.
No wonder Apple couldn't reach their estimates.
An adapter is very welkom but on top of the price of such a monitor it's going to be easier to buy a third party TFT.
Sony has very nice designs and the IBM's look good also.
And they are a lot cheaper.
