This just blows. If you've already got a walkman or discman, you can play your CDs on that. Why would anyone want to spend even $399 on a product that forces you to make copies of all your music, and keep it up to date everytime you buy a new album or whatever.

And there's already equivalent stuff out there that holds more, does more, and costs less.

That's not the point. The point is, if I'm going to brake into the $500 price range for a device, it better as h*** be up the wazoo with features. The iPod might be pimped out on the HD space, but it looks like c*** if you put it up next to a T3 which does movies, pictures, videos, documents, databases, and has unlimited expansion via flash cards. What's more value for your money? The extra HD space of the iPod makes sense for music, cuz you never know what song you might want to listen to. But it doesn't make any sense for photos. Are you seriously going to spend all day staring at your 10,000 photo collection?

If the iPod is going to be a PDA, then it SHOULD BE A PDA. Otherwise, it should stick to what it does best: playing music. Leave the photos to the digital cameras and the REAL PDAs. Or just burn a damn DVD with iDVD. It's not that hard.

60 Gigs makes sense for music, NOT for photos. There is no need for a single person to walk around all day viewing 10,000 photos on a 2 inch screen. None.

Listening to songs from 200 different albums? YES. Looking at photos from 10 years ago on a 2 inch screen? NO.

People are buying this for the huge hard drive, not for the photos. If you use losless encoding you probably want the 60 gig. So for the price you might balk, so Apple throws in a few extras like photos and color.

You whiners are unbelievable. iPod Photo is the new high end iPod. Note "HIGH END" You don't want color? You don't want photos? Buy a regular iPod or a mini. Apple is still selling those you know.

First, it's a niche product.

Second, it focuses on two things - pictures and music. It's not trying to be a PDA. And it does those things better than any PDA. Syncing music is as brain-dead simple as it can get with iTunes. Syncing photos will be brain-dead simple, either with iTunes, Adobe Photoshop Album or the new Photoshop Elements 3, Mac or Windows. And it has video out, allowing you to share your pictures on a TV. (I'm not aware of any PDAs that do that.) Maybe that's not interesting to you, but I know a lot of people that it WILL appeal to.

It's all about building the brand and maintaining mind share. It's just freakin' cool, and that's a major part of the iPod's appeal.

No, I wouldn't pay $500 or more for this iPod but it shows that Apple isn't just sitting on their hands and raking in the cash from iPod sales. Everyone knows that yesterdays top end features will be tomorrows mid-range features. You'll undoubtedly see color screens coming down the price ladder before long. When they get to a point where I think it makes sense and I can afford one, I'll buy one. I'm glad that Apple is continuing to innovate.

I paid the same price for the 3G iPod a year ago. I think it's pretty cheap for what it can do.

Do you seriously think that is what Apple is thinking people will do? I will be able to store all my music and photos on it. When visit my parents, I can easily show them the photos of my son in his Halloween costume (on their TV).

They could have called it the iPod color. Most of the people who buy it will buy it for the color menus, album art display.

Or they could have called it the iPod 60BG. Because a lot of people who buy it will buy it for more capacity. For photos, for lossless music, and just as a tiny firewire hard drive.

Or they could have called it the iPod 15. Because some people will buy it just because it has the longest battery life of any iPod ever.

Or they could have called it the iPod Plus. Because it is the new one, the biggest one, the one with the most features. Plenty of people will buy it just for those reasons.

They probably did the right thing, calling it the iPod Photo, though. Because the people who will buy it for those reasons will find out about them easily enough. Putting the emphasis on the photos mean some people will try it just for that purpose. Apple is good at creating new markets.

It'd make a lot more sense if they'd up the recording capabilities so one can plug in a good mic and use this for field recording, small concerts, etc. Then I'd buy it, no hesitation.

Bigger hard drive and color screen are just two reasons, but how 'bout this. How long until it will have the built in capabilities to play Keynote files? That's right people, just hook it up to a TV or portable projector and there it is, 10,000 sales presentatons in your pocket.

This seems to be directed at Semi-pro and pro photographers who may want to have samples put on their iPods to show to prospective clients when they go on site. If a remote can be used then the whole thing becomes a means of doing a presentation. it is for the same people that bought the belkin card reader/transfer This is NOT for the casual user which is why it is priced the way it is and why it is not replacing the regular iPod.

While I'm waiting for my iPod iPhoto from Apple to arrive (it shipped today), I ran up to the Saint Louis Apple Store to take a look at them in person.

It was very nice, the screen is a little darker than the color Palms but well enough to see the images and colors. However, I could NOT find any way to adjust the brightness or contrast.

I was also dissapointed to not find any new games to showcase the colors. Some kind of match game would have been my suggestion!!

The iPod iPhoto (needs a new catcher name though) was displayed next to an iBook with an iSight attached. I've used my older iPod to store photos but got a wild wishlist. I'd like to attach the iSight to the iPod and take photos! Hey why not! Just my suggestion.

According to the NY Times, which looked at this iPod more closely, you can connect this photo iPod to a TV screen, monitor or video projector and display all your photos on it using the iPod's control wheel to go forward and backward. It displays on the iPod screen a preview of the next photo too, which is not seen in the monitor connected to it, giving the user of the iPod advance warning as to what is going to pop up next in front of audiences.

I might as well complain ..;-)

I can't afford an iPod let alone an iPod Photo ... I was hoping for a Flash based one ... I only have about 50 songs I really like listening to anyways!!

For those who are complaining, these new devices are aimed at new buyers first, then to existing ipod owners. Since ipods are such a popular commodity, people who were gonna purchase one have more reasons to do so.

To the keynote user. You could just export the slides as jpegs and then add them to a slideshow list on the iPod and then control the display with the click wheel. You won't have the nice transisitions yet but it would still work. i know that is going to be my first use of it.
