Details emerge on Duke's iPod for freshmen program

Duke University's incoming freshman received a goodie bags that included a ) according to a News-Record.com report that has a few undisclosed details: "The project is being funded with money the school set aside for a one-time innovative technology purpose, and it's not known whether the program will continue after this academic year. The $500,000 price tag includes the iPods themselves, salary for an academic computing specialist and grants to faculty members who participate."
The article also notes that Duke approached Apple about the project and received the iPods at a discount as well as $10 gift certificate for each student to buy music from a Duke-only iTunes Music Store Web site developed by Apple.
"The iPods being given to students have 20-gigabytes of storage and a $35 voice-recorder attachment. They come pre-loaded with welcome messages from school president Richard Brodhead and provost Peter Lange, the school's alma mater and fight song, information about campus buildings and North Carolina's Research Triangle area, as well as tips from current students on studying."
The article also notes that non-freshman who are enrolled in classes that utilize iPods will be given a loaner. Duke has also posted a Website with more information on the program.

This is the start of something really big. Hard drive based learning and a future broadband internet will allow distance learning to become a true alliterative to the current education systems of today. At the same time, server based stored multimedia educational content will have a huge impact on the very nature of education. The system of "educationism" that excludes most of the people around the world, will be replaced with a free and open transfer of information that offer opportunity for everyone that can get to a proper computer.
