    But not for Macs

At least as of this morning, the "tech requirements" page for the HPiPOD http://h10049.www1.hp.com/music/us/en/specs_flash.html
says you must have Win2k or WinXP. No mention of MacOS

What were they thinking? Not that I believe their web page for a moment, of course.

    Disappointing

This doesn't come in a unique form factor or color. It doesn't have its own specs and price points. It doesn't have different features. It is exactly the same as the Apple 4G iPod. So really, we have not another iPod, but yet another reseller. Whoopteedoo.

True, it is anti-climactic, but other than the blueness, none of those things were expected. You really thought it would have different specs and price points?

    Disappointing (Not!)

And a HUGE new reseller at that! This is great news for Apple. Between the new retail outlets that will be added and HP's commercial campaign beginning this weekend, Apple will get a ton of additional exposure. h***, the name of the unit is the "Apple iPod from HP" so how can anyone complain about that? How anyone can't see this as great news is beyond me.

They were thinking that, all things being equal between Apple's and HP's models, Mac users will buy the Apple-logoed product.

    how lame...

Just another reseller, but with cool stickers, while supplies last. And it took them this long to sort out THOSE details? And are you going to go to one of these places to just to get the iPod+HP instead of just going to Best Buy, Target or the Apple Store. Nope, all this appears to be is a big marketing ploy by HP to pick up back to school sales by bundling "their" iPod with their lame systems.

Hey,but wait, I have a great idea for them!!! Why not come out with a Compaq version. It could look just the same as the Apple iPod and the iPod+HP, but they could stir up all sorts of free publicity and word of mouth (I know I told several people about the "special" HP iPod coming out today).

How lame. It could at have at least had HP silk-screened on it, or etched on the back.

I was afraid a different version of the iPod could cause problems for Apple, like the different color iMacs, but it seems Apple played it smart and have simply found another avenue for iPod sales, without any additional design considerations. The biggest thing out of all of this is HP's huge iTunes push. That may hold off the cheap online music competitors for an extra 30 seconds or so.

Hope the iMac is good news because after Apple's stock rose on the expectations of HP adding something useful to the mix, this is definitely going to be a disappointment.

    ADvantage Apple

I see huge media / distribution benefits for Apple but am clueless as to what HP really gains from this deal... so now HP will sell some nifty iPod tatoos - OK - but what else?

    No HP branding?

This is odd. Granted, it is a big reseller and they are really going to push the product, but in the end this is not what I think a lot of us were hoping for: an iPod clone of sorts.

Frankly, I can't see, other than folks who are buying new HP or Compaqs, who is going to go to hp.com to buy their iPod.

Now, if Apple were to spin the iPod & iTunes off into another company, then identical product from different sellers would make sense. But, really, what makes buying the iPod from HP, Target or Apple any different?

I haven't looked, but does HP even offer a student discount on the iPod, like Apple does?
