On Real's new freedom of music choice website, there's an option to "submit news". I just added the following, but it probably won't ever get posted. At least I know someone at Real will be reading it, since they have to review it to determine whether it is "relevant" or "interesting". I suggest others do the same to express their points of view directly to Real. (Morons, we're dealing with absolute morons!)

Real slashes prices on music!

Real Networks lowered prices of its music store, at the same time launching a new campaign to give consumers "freedom of music choice". The effort is being met with some resistance from the Mac community, with good reason. Apparently, Real believes that "choice" does not apply to the operating system for which consumers are using. Real does not offer any availability to users other than Windows for its Music Store.

I did read thru the petition, all of it. I was replying to the line in MacNN's rather tepid report that 'dozens of pro-Apple supporters offered anti-RealNetworks opinions on the petition.'

Yep, it was funny. Rude, but funny. :)

If every one DOES buy a lot of music from Real right now, it will bury them. Remember, Real still has to pay x amount to the Industry for each track which means they are losing money on each sale. No where did the music industry say it would support cheap downloads like this...this only hurts everyone in Real's cheap shot attempt.

You're right. But even Real's execs probably don't believe this "sale" will generate high sales, so it was an acceptable risk in exchange for the publicity and media coverage.

Freedom of choice...? what are they babbling about. I believe consumers can choose to buy an iPod or some other player. Therefore, they can choose to use Real's music service or iTunes Music Store. Or they can choose to by CDs and rip the music themselves. [Or they can even "steal" their music online.] Seems like comsumers have a lot of choice.

Real needs to stop wasting their time whining and develop their own compelling offerings... something worthwhile enough to get consumers to buy a player other than the iPod, just so they can use that service. Otherwise, I have no sympathy for Real. Apple gets its rewards and customer loyalty for offering the best solutions.
