QuickTime behind RealPlayer, Windows Media

QuickTime was third in the streaming media market in November behind both RealPlayer and Windows Media, according to market intelligence researcher Media Metrix. Yesterday it reported that media players now are installed on 99 percent of U.S. home PCs and that in November 2000, 47 percent of those users (both Mac and PC) used a media player, while 40 percent used a streaming-media player. QuickTime, however, lagged behind both RealPlayer and Windows Media with a 4 percent marketshare in streaming media, which was up 33 percent from January 2001. RealPlayer and Windows Media were one and two respectively with 28 and 22 percent market share, respectively.

    results

note that Media Matrix gets its results through the use of client software installed on user's machines. Here at work, I know *every* computer, PC and Mac, has Quicktime 4 installed as part of a standardized loadset, and we never were contacted about providing information. So, take the numbers with a grain of salt, as with any such study.

You should also note that the likelyhood of Media Matrix actually even looking at Mac usage it rather slim. They sample through techniques honed on the PC (Windows) platform, and I doubt they are able to do the same on Mac OS (at least that's been their intent for years now - to ignore anything that isn't Microsoft)

    Math

I think the intersting thing is the complete lack of math - if 99% of the computers have streaming software installed, 28% use real, 22% use windows, 4% use quicktime, what happened to the remaining 44%?

    Bogus Numbers

There's a discussion about this going on within the Quicktime talk mailing list. MacroMedia has stats on their web page that show that QuickTime is on 30-40% of machines they checked.

Also, many people are saying that these numbers only apply to streaming media, and probably don't include progressive download movies or regular movies that you have to completely download to view.

    Odd...

It seems to me that just a year or so ago, QuickTime was recognized as number two -- a long way from Real to be sure, but almost equally ahead of WMP (I remember something like 60%, 30% and 10%).

It seems unlikely that so drastic a change has happened (it would have required, for one thing, a massive un-installing of Quicktime from all sorts of machines). The fact that they are talking only about Streaming players may explain it, though it remains questionable: Did they measure what software is used for viewing streaming content (which would be easier -- just check with the streaming content providers), and if not, how can they know that someone who has QT installed doesn't at least occasionally use it to view streaming content.

    Tod Abbott.
I take this whole thing with a large grain of salt, and am tempted to chalk it up to more MS marketing.

    M$ does it again

WHat do you expect? Windows Media Player is installed on EVERY SINGLE WINDOWS ME box whether you like it or not. It takes over streams from QUicktime, too.. and reassociating the files is a beeyotch.

Microsoft is once again tying things to their OS in order to try and squash everyone else out of the market.

    helloooooooooooo!!!

You have to be kidding. Actually, the majority of people are not authors. I'm an author. And anyone who is will tell you that its a lot smoother to create, manipulate, sequence and make available in QuickTime than any other format for video or motion playback. The magical embed command is flawless and the smoothest playback on the market is QuickTime. Streaming and progressive download. This "survey" is c***. P lease, besides, M$ has been doing this for years. It was centerpiece of the anti trust suit. Notice on PC boxes that QuickTime has a check box that asks if you want to be told if any other programs modified the plugin. Obviously M$ has tweaked that by overtaking the entire video stream, ignoring format and plugin entirely. What’s next, flash files to be played in wmp? Then what? P athetic. I'll never buy a PC. M$ is notorious for sabotage.

    Underpromoted = underused

For the Bush/Gore acceptance/concession speeches I went to ABC.com and CNN.com to look for a streaming feed of both speeches. Guess what, neither had QuickTime listed anywhere on the related web pages, only RealJunk or Windoze Mindless Player.

I was bummed since I had spent the evening with my family celebrating my daughter's birthday (some things are just more important).

Then I saw the QuickTime Control Strip module and popped it open and selected CNN.com. This opens a media "page" (Shockwave?) in the QT Player. And there were the QuickTime feeds of both speeches.

CNN.com *never* mentioned this on the relevant web page(s) for the stories. I bet they wonder why the usage numbers are so low (uhm, DUH!).

I actually pulled in CNN's QuickTime formats after being rebuffed by the major web sites and their RealJunk/Windoze Media Everywhere agenda. Go figure.

If you don't promote it guys - NO ONE WILL USE IT. Simple enough.

    QT

Sony puts quicktime on their PC computers.
Others need to do so as well.

Though you are right they need to promote it much better.
Their whole promotion campaign for everything right now sucks.
Once the new G4s and new Ti laptops are available in good quantities we better see a new much more improved advertisement campaign.

Who's actually streaming for WMP? BTW, the Mac implementation is abysmal. I got much better throughput with Real and QT. QT gave the best picture, but took up the most bandwidth. Real's "8" codec are currently the best bang for the bandwidth buck. If you simply need the best picture quality, the winner hand's down is Quicktime.
