ZDNet: Apple's iDVD is next 'killer app'

updated 12:31 pm EST, Tue January 23, 2001

ZDNet has posted an article on iDVD, calling it "the next killer app." "Apple Computer Inc.'s most far-reaching announcement at this month's Macworld Expo/San Francisco was an also-ran with most of the mainstream press: the company's embrace of DVD authoring as a cornerstone capability of its latest Macs." (The New York Times ran a similiar article this past weekend.)

    "very costly hardware"

"To eliminate the need for very costly hardware"...

Yeah, right. A feature available on the $250 ATI Radeon card.
Well, at least on the Windows version. ATI's web site mentions that they do not have plans to offer this feature (along with a few others) on the Mac at this time.

It's pretty absurd to drain all the performance out of your CPU to poorly accomplish a task that inexpensive dedicated chips can take care of in real time.

    Just a thought.

    video CD

DVD-R hardware is going to be expensive for another year, but it's possible to make video-CD's using plain old CD-RW -- they work in most DVD players, they just don't hold as much as a DVD.

Apple should push the iDVD/CD-RW combination to make video CD's now. That allows iDVD to start building momentum, mindshare, etc. now instead of a year from now when the DVD-R hardware is cheap enough. If Apple waits for DVD-R hardware to get cheap, then iDVD won't have its lead anymore. Dell, Gateway aren't stupid -- they'll have video software ready by then.

    Re: video cd

My guess is that apple with push video-cds... but that their software wasn't ready yet. So in a couple of months, everyone with cdrs is going to get some extra added functionality they didn't plan for.

    this is true...

    And dont forget about sony.

...and dont forget it will be c***.

they dont get it!!!they have no universal capture driver. we have quicktime. we have FCP and DVD studio pro and imovie, and iDVD. now with dvd authoring on the desktop with the ability to write to DVD, hello!!!!!! Am I the only one who is getting this? pc's have to capture video using one driver and edit using another program. some crappy app. that oem's will package with their hardware.
what are they going to do, package adobe premiere. and then give away a dvd burning app. hahaha, this is too funny. you gotta capture using one thing. edit using another. then finally when you are done. write to dvd using yet another app. Appel is so awesome by putting it all in to one interface for us. we are blessed.

    Killer App?

I don't know if i-DVD qualifies as a "killer app". Actually I wonder who this program is really for. In order to get the DVD burn capability, you have to buy the most expensive computer that Apple sells. And I think that if you are a home user, you are less likely to buy this machine than a professional artist or videographer. And even then, if you are doing professional work, you would want something more like Apple's DVD Authoring Studio, which is of course also mentioned in the article too. But still, who is i-DVD really for? Just my 2 cents.

    DTP as killer app

DTP (desk top publishing) wasn't easily available to the low-end market when it first came along either given the price of the software and laser printers.

    Question????

I've read all the stuff and there's something very troubling in there. They SAY that DVDs burned with iDVD will work on any DVD player that supports DVD-Video. However, I have also read that this is NOT exactly the same format that movie studios put on DVD disks.. that this is a very specific format that is ONLY available on the most current DVD players.

Anyone for sure know what's going on here??

    quicktime is the reason

it works best with that "format". not to mention mpeg-2 and eventually mpeg-4 encoding. homeboy.

    iDVD is for iMacs

iDVD isn't for powermacs, it's for iMacs. You can burn onto CD-R media. iMacs will have CDRW at the next revision.

What I'm more worried about is if the 7450 Gs will ever ship.
