Reader: OS 9.1 not available w/Pro Keyboards

A MacNN reader writes that the Apple Pro Keyboard does not ship with the OS 9.1 CD update, despite documentation in Apple's TIL archive that says otherwise: "I ordered the keyboard from the Apple Store online using my $10 off iTools promotion on 1/11/00. The keyboard arrived yesterday and did not include the 9.1 CD. When I called Apple store support I was told the TIL was 'in error.' BTW, the keyboard was DOA! The Apple store promised to refund my money, but I am of course out my promotional $10 off."

I just bought the Pro Keyboard as well, and did not get a CD...I assumed I was mistaken in thinking I should have gotten it, but....

damn.

Keyboard

I ordered two apple pro keyboards for our office last week. They arrived on 1/19 and both were accompanied by the 9.1 cd. I wonder who is packing the boxes?

Why refund

Why did you get a refund rather than a replacement keyboard, fool? Or are you just pissed that you didn't get a free CD.

Misread TIL

The TIL does not indicated that 9.1 comes with the Pro Keyboard, rather it simply states that the 9.1 CD that comes with the keyboard (if you get that SKU) will not work with older machines.

It was my understnading that there would be a different SKU that included Mac OS 9.1 for about $100.

TIL is correct!

I called Apple Customer Care and talked to several folks. The TIL is correct and the CD does ship with the keyboard. If what the reader claims the Apple Store people told him is accurate, then that Apple Store person is just plain incorrect.

However, since the reader ordered the keyboard just as Apple announced the bundling of the Mac OS 9.1 CD with the Pro Keyboard, there is more than a good chance that he was shipped an older keyboard package that didn't include the CD. So it is both Apple's fault for letting older packages slip through the system, and the reader's fault for ordering it so soon. Since the reader is still elligible to get his CD for free, this should really not be an issue.

Those who got the CD... which did you get? A full installer CD or an upgrade CD?

Hmmm. ... I believe it is the full install since the "read me" includes special directions if you are updating from system 8.1.

My order placed on 1/14

I received the keyboard and mouse on 1/21 as a partial shipment to my Powerbook G4 order. The keyboard box included one Apple keyboard and one MacOS 9.1 UPDATE CD. Which is actually more than I had expected considering I had not read the TIL.

Apple...

I had Mac OS 9 saved for later ordering. Once 9.1 was announced, the saved item was "no longer available." I also had the Pro Keyboard saved. Just to be sure I made a NEW purchase for the Pro k/b - no CD. But I did get the correct SKU for 9.1. And the Pro k/b is disappointing, even w/ 9.1 can't use it to boot, so I still use my trusty ADB (w/ b&w and ADB LCD).

It is up to Apple. WE know "available for immediate order" is Steve-speak for "not available now" due to a) backorder, b) unavailabel parts, c) over-whelming demand, d) we have our head up our *** and don't know how to run a $B company (we're just hippies anyway groving on the iTunes screensaver).

Apple needs to grow up and fly straight. You PLAN product marketing, ads, delivery, and have units in the pipeline. I've seen Apple PULL System 6.0.6 and when they could not, insert 6.0.7 in the boxes before they left the warehouse. So where is the Q&A here?

Uhm...

Uhm "Greg", I don't believe Steve Jobs ever said it was "available for immediate order" for these products. As for your points:

1) Apple *does* plan product marketing -- I received Titanium and G4 launch materials (We're an Apple Authorized reseller) the day after all the products were announced so we could put up posters, distribute brochures, give presentations, etc. That's planned product marketing if I ever heard it. We never get stuff like that from Dell or Gateway so quickly.

2) Apple has ads ready to roll. (Maybe the shoulf *fill* their orders before adding to the problem?)

3) Delivery -- as you may have seen, the Titaniums are now shipping. They knew there'd be demand and production wasn't fully ready for a launch, but Apple knew they had to announce the new products in January, and not in February when they'd have plenty of products to deliver.

4) They have units in the pipeline. In fact, The Cube had way too many, hence many of their inventory problems. It's a tough situation of trying to guess how many units will be sold so you don't make too many and end up with a ton left over, but don't force too much backordering.

So as soon as you're in charge of a billion dollar company and can properly control inventory, correctly and consistantly guess demand for a newly-released product, and find better product marketing that overnight FedExing materials to resellers and field reps around the country, you let me know. I'll go on www.gregnn.com and be sure to b**** about all of the idiotic things you do. By the way, I'll take your keyboard off your hands since you seem to have trouble finding the power button on your computer itself...

It does not work!

I've bought the Spanish version of the Apple Pro Keyboard ... and I'm stuck with the US keyboard layout that does not match the keys of my keyboard!

I can change the Keyboard control panel but it has no effect whatsoever.

After searching a lot time in the TIL, I finally found "Some USB keyboards connected to a PCI-based USB adapter card do not offer alternate keyboard layouts, nor the use of Easy Access software."

What it does not say is that this restriction also applies to Apple's own PRO Keyboard!

Am I really stuck with a keyborad that does not work? Is their a hack to make the Apple Pro Keyboard that it should use the Spainsh ISO keyboard layout?

I have a G3 233Mhz with a USB PCI card with Mac OS 9.1 installed.

The more curious is that the Keyboard works perfectly with Mac OS X beta that I've installed in my G3!!!!!!!!

Mine didn't come with 9.

I got my Apple Pro Keyboard last week and it DIDN'T include a 9.1 CD. When I called Apple, they said it ISN'T included with the keyboard.

However, I was able to install the download version by removing any non-Roman fonts.

Update CD not available

I called Apple this evening because I am one of those people who did NOT receive a OS 9.1 updater CD with my new Pro Keyboard. I was told to call back in 1.5 weeks and check again because at this point, the updater CDs were not yet available.

OK...

So after reading all of this last week, I called apple after I didn't get my CD. I was told by a sales tech that he keyboard apsolutly did not come with the CD. I pointed out the TIL article and asked to speak with a supervisor. The superviser got on the phone, apploigised for the misunderstanding and said that they were currently out of CD's and that is why I did not recieve one. They gave me a case number and said to call back in a week to get them to ship the CD.
So after todays modification of the TIL article I called apple and this time the tech said, "I'm sorry for the confusion. It is suposed to mean that you can download the updater to make the keys work."

So I am wondering, a) are the head apple people not telling their sales people something or are the supervisors telling lies to get people off the phone..

So what do I plan on doing? Call back, get a different tech and see what different story they tell me.

Oh well..

Spanish keyboard

Apple says that the keyboard is only supported on Macs with built-in USB ports (not older Macs with USB cards):

You can use the keyboard on an older Mac if you want (in fact, that's what I'm doing now) but because it's not supported by Apple, they can't guarantee you won't run into bugs like the one you described.
