Sears reduces Mac product line

updated 08:10 am EST, Tue January 23, 2001

Sources inform MacNN that Sears will soon only be carrying the $799 iMac and Indigo iBook in its stores. One reason for the decision lies in a simplification of Sears' Apple strategy, without abandoning the platform. Additionally, Apple's Pro Mouse and Pro Keyboard will soon be available for purchase at all CompUSA locations, if they aren't already.

    Apple Pro Mouse (COMPUSA)

CompUSA in Towson, MD has these mice, but they cost $69.99! What a price tag for a 1-button mouse Apple mouse!

Even Microsoft's Intellimouse Explorer doesn't cost that much in CompUSA.

    Oh..

I didn't realize this was an issue. I saw one mouse and three keyboards at my local CompUSA (Springfield, NJ) this Sunday morning.

    mouse/keyboard

i saw them last week in a compUSA just outside Philly (maybe the weekend before even?)..... the keyboard is a competative price.... the mouse... i dunno. it's a VERY s*** mouse, but when it is next to Macally, kensington, logitech, etc 3 button scroll-wheel optical mice that are mostly $30-$40 it makes it tough to go for..... i would have killed for one after playing with one @ MWNYC this summer, but since then i got a graphire drawing tablet and am now addicted to the multi-button scroll wheel friend i have.... i still want an optical mouse, but i might have to diss Apple on this one...... function over fashion, though it is sooooooooo damn good looking! argh! if it had come with my G4 i would have been really really psyched, but as an upgrade... i'm not sure.

    Sears is not even trying

Apple should wake up to the fact that selling though Sears is a joke as Sears is not even trying. The Sears in my community has an iMac (no iBooks anymore) in a very prominate position - BUT it is ONE HUNDRED DOLLARS more expensive than CompUSA and it always has this messed up screen looking for a system folder.

What Apple should do is create a special demo system that automatically launches and sells the Mac to customers through interactivity. This dead screen or just putting the Mac on a counter with no focus on its feature, benefits, etc. is ZERO help to Apple Computer.

    of mice and men...

My Logitech two button scroll mouse, and especially my three button scroll mouse with glowing logo and ergonomic hand grip are MUCH SEXIER and a heck of alot more functional than Apples albeit clear optical mouse.

Now Logitech is coming out with a feel mouse that will allow you to feel the icons as you mouse over them. C'mon Apple, your customers deserve better. Stop resting on your very expensive laurels and start giving us the innovation we need and expect.

I got my sister a present.. 25 bucks for a 2 button, scroll wheel, optical mouse from Kensignton. Even before she got into the multiple buttons, she immediately loved the scroll wheel. And aside from the scroll wheel, she saysa it just seems to work smoother (when I set up the machine for her, I found that the c*** from cupertino mouse was impossible to use on her smooth wood surface desk... I HAD to use a mousepad).

    Actually....

...Apple does create a self running demo. Every Mac that I have seen at sears, Best Buy, etc, has been running that. However, I normalyy just use command Q to quit and play nanosaur. You would be suprosed to see how many Imacs Nanosaur sells.

    Sears

Well, even though Sears does a terrible job of marketing the Mac (from my demo days experience) at least having the $799 iMac is a better strategy than having only a $1200 iMac available as was the case with the location where I work (Lincoln, NE).

    Who buys at Sears?

Who buys a computer at Sears? The first time computer buyer. What are they looking for? A cheap, entry machine. The $799 machine makes sense, too bad it's not $599. If they like there first computer, they'll be more apt to buy a Mac in the future. If they never use it, they didn't spend too much. Give Sears a cheap mac to sell. As for frozen computers, this happens all the time to the display machines. I was in Circuit City last night and a Cube was locked up. No response from the keyboard to force quit or force restart and no response from the on/off "switch" on the cube. I felt bad leaving it that way but it was padlocked down and couldn't get to a reset button (under the unit?). The solution, a machine that doesn't lock up. Apple needs a machine that when it locks up it automatically restarts and then goes into the automatic demo. Frozen machines with an archaic black and white coded error message would turn me off as a new computer buyer.
