hate the new prices - you can get a new Dell 20" flat panel monitor for $750 on certain deal days. There is no way in h*** I'm paying $1300 or $550 more for the Apple look. I love Apple, but they have got to start catering to their users. They always expect us to maintain our loyalty and just pay whatever ungodly amount they ask for, but this is ridiculous.

The regular price for the Dell is $999. It's also 4:3 ratios, which is the biggest reason Dell can sell them cheaper. There simply are more panels at that size and ratio than the widescreen cinema displays. Personally, I like the wide aspect ratio and it fits what I do.

Goodness, people are asking a lot from Apple. Everything from a $199 display to a $499 computer.
Sure, they're out there, and if you want them, go buy one-simple as that. It does give me the giggles to read such rants though!

Who pays for that? Oh yeah, you. What some Mac people do not realize is that most PC users price shop. So while you can always find someone who buys cars and Dell monitors MSRP, most buy the same product at discount.

In addition, beside the fact that Dell LCD has excellent specs and get very good reviews from both the press and its users, the biggest reason what it can sell them cheaper is a variety of factors (JIT invertory management, lower cost from supplier, etc), the least of which is the 4:3 ratio.

You need widescreen, great. You go buy that widescreen. No need to dismiss other people's choice. What's next? You jump on someone's case because the person chose to buy Logitech or Microsoft's mouse because it offers them the features at the price the person needs?

Seriously, what do you drive? I drive a hign-end luxury car. Does it give me the right to tell you off because my vehicle does not fit your needs?

No wonder why people think some Mac users are zealots.

You can't really compare Apple products with PC products.
Apple products are high-end products.

is 2 17" LCDs from Sony, for less than a single 20" from Apple, with resolution at 2560x1024, or pretty close to the new 30". Not that bad looking at all, especially since the new aluminum displays are more generic now than ever.

Hey, he was saying that the widescreen fits more for what he does. He also didn't say only idiots buy dells or anything like that. He made two points, one was reg. price (OMG, how dare he mention the current regular price, rather than the price you can get something the cheapest ever, even if its only at 3am on wednesdays), and the ratio, and you get on his case as if he said "Go suck a cow you PC loving a****** and get away from here!" geesh, you need to chill a bit.

The truth is that MOST people price shop, look for deals, and find a spot between cost and performance. For some people, this will be apple's displays. For others, it won't. But why do people always expect Apple to make 621 different displays to fit everyone's needs. They were in that business before. It sucked (remember those wonderfully cheap CRT monitors they sold, with the .39 dot pitch and everything!).

The only apple monitors I've ever owned were those built into my Classic II and 128K, and one that came with a IIsi (which I got from a friend). I bought a Sony with my 7100, and got a Samsung 19" to replace that when it died. I doubt I'd get one of these, but then again, they're not for me. I certainly don't care, nor do I sit in CompUSA drooling over these things when I walk in. I've got better things to do (although apparently not much better, because I actually went into CompUSA in the first place).

You are correct, I incorrectly insinuated form BB's comment that he is automatically implying that choosing Dell is wrong, which is not the case.

And also, Apple does pick cream of the crop, in many cases, when the product is first launched. For example, when the 23" HD was introduced, it was indeed better than anything else out there. However, Apple let that product, along with the other displays, stagnant for at least 18 months without any update. During that term, better LCDs with higher contrast, faster refresh rate, etc came out and basically stole sale from Apple.

So getting good component is only one thing. Apple, please keep up with the innovation!

Is someting wrong with Panther that people are upset that Tiger won't make it until 2005? Microsft announced Longhorn early last year and it won't be out until sometime in late 2006. Patience please...

When are the new displays available? Next week, next year, next decade, right after Euro 2004?

Though apple's display is pricier than dells, before you jump into conclusion, go compare both specs. For gamers and normal users, it doesn't seem to much different except for price. But for graphic and movie editors, there are huge difference. Check before you comment.

Let's talk Tiger!

Spotlight is a Launchbar ripoff, but it was a foregone conclusion this functionality would be added to the core OS. Looks like apple will kick the c*** out of Longhorn's WinFS by building metadata/database stuff into their OS way before Longhorn has it. Way to one-up microsoft, apple. Wish the finder had tabs though, that would really help things out along with Smart folders. Also would have liked to see a dashboard-like spot for drag and dropping files you want to move, a la Path Finder. I wonder if spotlight will allow you to do other actions on files rather then just open them, or if you can drag and drop things from the Spotlight bar.

Safari RSS kicks a**. Now apple needs an interface for blogs and plan files. It will probably happen down the road. Safari still needs a few things, like an ability to return to the last web page(s) you had open when you closed the app, ad blocking, and customized search rather then just google and nobody else. Saft gives you that stuff, it just sucks you have to pay for it since those features are so obvious.

Dashboard is a "maybe it will be cool but it looks dumb". The idea itself is pretty cool, but it depends upon what developers do with it. It looks sort of like an experiement in moving towards an app services kind of concept. But I like it. It's a h*** of a lot better to use Expose for this kind of thing then to have to switch to the finder or some other c*** when you're in the middle of something and just want a quick piece of information. But again, it depends on developers.

Automater is VERY interesting. Typically apple has shyed away from giving this sort of power to the average user. This could mark a turning point in the kind of apps apple comes out with. I REALLY like the idea, but it remains to be seen how useful it works. One question is if you can have automations go off at a certain time or do you always have to click "Go"?

Problem is that Spotlight reads existing metadata/content from the file. Its not storing the files in a large database for indexing purposes. But keep in mind that most of Longhorn's WinFS features/concepts have been announced as not making it into the first release.

I don't know, I think the Spotlight function, if it works as advertised, is spectacular. "Smart Searches"? H.264 is great, the new iChat, and Automator? I was wondering how important the enhancements would be, and they're spectacular.
