1394 Trade Association forms Wireless Working

updated 05:24 pm EST, Mon January 22, 2001

The 1394 Trade Association has announced the formation of a new Wireless Working Group, established to facilitate interconnectivity between the 1394 wired domains and wireless domains for computer and consumer electronics equipment. This new group is chaired by Steve Bard of Intel. The WWG plans an initial concept demonstration at the Intel Developers' Forum in San Jose Feb. 27 through March 1.

    1394?

Funny number...isn't that the IEEE number for Firewire? I wonder if they worked with Apple to develop Firewire. In anycase, wireless groups should work towards a unified cell phone standard for DSL cell phone service. Cell phone internet is way to slow as it is. It could be made a lot faster.

    Great...

Put the fox in charge of the henhouse. An Intel person in charge of a competing technology (USB). Well, that's another technology that will get killed due to politics...

    Where's 800 Mbps????

    I don't care about wireless Firewire/IEEE-1394.

What I want to know is where are the 800 Mbps systems? It has been rumored to be "close" for over a year. 800 Mbps would kill any comments about USB being better than Firewire.

Also 1.6 Gbps Firewire has been on the drawing board for some time. Where is it? That would kill any comments about serial ATA being better than Firewire.

Why divert attention away from the core set and worry about wireless when the basics are being ignored?

Maybe it is a round about way for Intel to kill Firewire/IEEE-1394. Keep it stuck at 400 Mbps until everything else passes it.

    Where's 800 Mbps?

The answer my friend may just be in the chair of the IEEE 1394 committee, and several key positions...Intel execs all. hmmm, don't they have a vested interest in something called USB 2?

    Who cares if vested

Apple just needs to put out the firewire 800Mbps and it will exist.
Intel is sliding on all fronts.

    Not comparable to USB

Having Intel in on this is a good thing. Remember, USB is for PCs only - it's not suited to become a wireless standard. They're not even going to try. You need a p2p protocol for wireless applications - hence the use of firewire. Having Intel back this will be a very good thing because it will greatly increase the speed at which 1394 gets accepted. Intel might even include it in some of their new chipsets. If this happens, we'll see a pile of new 1394 devices in no time.

    Believe Hype?

I strongly disagree with Intel's involvement in a open source technology that DOES compete with theirs. As far as marketing to the masses is concerned, USB 2.0 and 400 Mbps 1394 are perceived as in competion. Intel has been on the 800 Mbps working group and THAT hasn't sped up anything...why should I trust them on wireless? There again they have a properitary technology they have been working on.
