Could Be a Good Sign....

Well, lets see........
How many people do I know that own a BMW? 1
How many people do I know that own a Daimler/Chrysler: 15
How many people do I know that own a GM vehicle? 25
How many people do I know.........

I think that this is a good promotional maneuver, but other than that, really not that important a news item.

Maybe the Big Three will let Apple have a crack at their high end cars, sort of like the way OnStar gained inroads.

Bundle iPods with Caddilac, 300M, etc.

Or just maybe they would try an onslaught with Hyundai. Afterall, I see an aweful lot of fresh, college students, with iPod earbuds, driving Hyundai's.

The Honda Civic version

I have something like this for my new Civic. ;) During negotiations got the dealer to include the cassette player in the price (among other things). Now I can use my cassette adapter and drop the iPod in the cup holder. Of course, after I scored this "victory" I realized: I don't usually bother setting up the iPod during my daily commute (~30 minutes) and I lost a valuable storage space. :( Oh well.

This is nice. Hopefully iPod kits will become available for virtually all makes and models of vehicles, whether they come from Apple, the car manufacturers or a third party.

Personally, I think this is an incredibly stupid move from a marketing standpoint. Sure it's cool technology, but apple should not be repeatedly pushing the notion that their products are designed solely for creative elitist yuppies with a lot of money to burn.

This kind of thing is exactly why everyone thinks macs are too expensive.

It seems as if everyone is upset because BMW is the only automotive company that has stepped forward to unifity this project.

As for me, I am excited because I have a new Mini arriving in three weeks. One wire! Steering wheel control. iPod harmony.

no go for Navigation

Unfortunately, the adaptor does not work with the Navigation system installed. I hope a software update for the nav system comes out soon. iTunes on your Dash :) But this is a very cool start.

could be cool

i wonder if you can still browse through the contents directly through the ipod. that would be great for a passenger to play dj/navigator. it would suck if you're limited to "play all 2000 songs" or "play these 100 songs" as your only filtering options. how about a way to make it work with the on-the-go playlist option also.

i guess it's good enough for now that you can make playlists from the computer, but i'd love to see full access through a nav screen or idrive. how's that for marketing: idrive with ipod! it would sure beat audi/vw with their phatnoise hard drive audio that looks like a cd changer to the car stereo.

BMW are the sexiest cars, so is apple, why is everyone upset, if you aspire to drive a bmw then you probably have high standards and an apple freak, whats the problem? Can anyone say the BMW is ugly, how about a G5 packed in a dell box....

Imagine an advertisement for the iPod and how if you buy a BMW with you iPod, you can get $250-$500 off your BMW purchase. I'm just kidding. Just saying that in case someone decides to misunderstand my silly intentions.

Hmmm...
As a cyclist, BMW drivers rank with the worst drivers on the road, along with Volvo, Cadillac drivers. Arrogant, overly aggressive, just plain dumb. So, now I'll have to avoid getting killed by idiot Beam-sters with not only a cell phone in one hand, but their p*****... I mean iPod control in the other.

Seriosly, folks, this is a good PR move for Apple and BMW.
BMWs are slick and cool. iPods are slick and cool.
If few can actually afford a BMW, most can afford an iPod.

Maybe this will create the kind of phenomenon like the people who troll malls wearing hats and T-Shirts with the logos of products they could NEVER afford. It makes them THINK they're in the same league. But just one look reveals the glaring truth! So, maybe a few more headbangers will buy iPods?

looks like it's pretty similar to the phatbox interface for audis and VWs. not too revolutionary, but good enough i guess. better than nothing.

affordable bmws

actually the bmws that this works with are the cheapest ones out there. and in fact, you can't have a navigation system or even a cd changer. and minis work with this also, so it goes from ~$17k-$45k or there abouts, not the upper range of autos at all.

Glove box?? Use AUX

Please..my precise iPod rolling around in a glove box? No, give me a front AUX port on an good after market MP3 compliant stereo and a nice dash mount (and a BMW).

BMWs

Some of the most over-hyped pieces of garbage out there! Basically all these cars are good for (and the same goes for Mercedes, Lexus, etc.) is to show your neighbors you have more money than you know what to do with, so you can spend it on overpriced automobiles that chew up huge amounts of gasoline to take you to the car wash, so you can waste huge amounts of water washing the car to make it look good sitting in your driveway.

It wont be long for the rest of us. Just read this.

LAS VEGAS--Alpine Electronics of America Inc. demonstrated car audio head units that are capable of connecting to and controlling Apple Computer Inc.'s iPod player.

With a one-cable connection to selected 2004 Alpine in-dash receivers, iPod users will be able to operate key playback features from the Alpine receiver's buttons, the company said. Playlists, album, artist and song title text will appear on the head unit.

Alpine's system works with an interface box that uses the iPod Accessory Protocol allowing audio and control signals to be sent over the Ai-NET system bus to the in-dash receiver.

The iPod Ready Interface kit will be available later this summer

Sheesh

Get a clue, apple's products "are designed solely for creative elitist yuppies with a lot of money to burn." So it's totally natural they can have some buttons on a BMW act like the remote control. I saw the commercial and you don't even get a dock! You plug a cable into it. Real yuppies are NOTY gling to like this "integration."

Of course they should, it's called aspiration. You all aspire to being money burning, bmw owning yuppies - then you find out you can be a almost yuppie and get an iPod for just 249.00! Wow, you're alomost there.

Also, it helps Apple to team up with other people to spread the word, and piggyback on their marketing.

BTW, whatever happened to the HP iPod, isn't that due out now?

The www.ipodyourbmw.com site says "coming soon" LOL!

Good reason for no dock

Well, there's a good reason for no dock. There are 3 different docks that Apple sells, the two for the regular iPods (one slightly bigger than the other), and the miniPod dock. I'll be surprised if the iPod case makers don't already have a nice mount that works well in the glovebox.

I still think they should integrate it better, with song titles, a scroll wheel and integrated. A nice 1st step that Apple/Alpine/BMW should have introduced 9 months ago.

This is pretty cool. I hope Audi/Volskwagen follow suit. Shame track titles can't display on the CD LCD though.

I was expecting more. I guess this is good enough, but not the "whole package" concept Apple tries to pursue. No track names? iPod just sits in the glove box? No clip or holder?

It seems that VW should have been used instead of BMW.
