    I don't get it

how am I physically prevented from capturing a half-hour of "Dharma & Greg" via a video-in from my TV to my analog-to-FireWire converter and then burning it to disk via iDVD?

    just wait

by security algorithms built into the software. But you haven't seen anything yet. Wait til you shell out $3000.00 for the DVD and the encryption algorithms prevent you from making a copy of your wedding video. THEN you guys are going to be miffed.

    It's all about money

I see everything now a days going to a pay-per-use. It's just a matter of big media companies wanting to find more ways to get our money out of us. Satelite radio will requires us to pay a monthly fee and every radio-like technolgy from then on will too. Free cable TV? WIll never happen. But they still have comercial just like free TV. It really gets into a big brother thing once you start to get into encryption. Who has control of your rights, the company with the keys to the encryption. Polticans cannot run for office without lots of money, where do they get it? The same companies who want more of your money and have the keys to the encryption. So then you get this BS stuff like DCMA. This is just the begining folks. I still belive in our laws and systems for justice and I think that eventually it will end up at the supreme court and they will declare it unconstitutional - I hope.

    digital to digital

You can for now. You could capture Dharma and Gred, superimpose your dog into a scene or whatever, then burn it to a DVD. But, because the source was an analog RCA input the quality will look like a VHS video tape. What you can't to is take a digital signal, like the source from a DVD (or HDTV apparently) and copy that.

As the author mentioned this has already happened with DATs. A few years ago I was using a DAT to master my band's songs. The mastering required copying the songs to one DAT, then from that one to another. (I don't remember why, but that's what we had to do.) We couldn't do it. The second DAT simply would not record because the input signal was purely digital and it assumed it was from a copyrighted CD.

I'm planning on filming my own movie this spring and I'd love to be able to give it out on DVD. If I can't because my computer is assuming I'm duplicating copyrighted material I'm going to be "miffed" to say the least.

    one for the dark side

copyright is one of the most stunting aspects of human evolution. When we allow people to have a copyright and prevent others in using, viewing, showing, sharing or building on some type of information it slows down our evolution. When things are proprietary the industry is stiffeled to growing slower (look at apple) when we allow the ability to share and build upon existing ideas we accelerate at much higher speeds, (internet, MP3, MPEG, the wheel) are all examples of how things can grow at exponential rates when copyright/coppyprotection is not a hurdle. Yes people do need to make money on there inventions, ideas, art but NOT ant the cost of continued innovation. Yes I have burned songs I do not own on a CD however if I like a album I DO buy it regardless of being able to get it for free. I am a independent film maker and I do not have problems with others sharing my work the only problem is when others sell your work. The problem are the guys making millions of illegal copied of CD's and selling them as the original not the sharing of the works

    For the people, by the...

There happen to be a part of the (U.S.)constitution that says if we, the people, don't like something about our system, we have the FREEDOM to fix it. No amount of semantics should EVER convince anyone otherwise. It's there to prevent the people from being walked all over. I've never wanted to be a lawyer (until now). Someone find a reeeeeeeeeeal good one willing to help fix this problem. There's just one catch... the lawyer is not going to make a whole bunch of money.

That's just it-- you need to use your "analog-to-FireWire converter" ... Just one more reason why we're not going to see FireWire equipped TiVo boxes for a _long long_ time

    This sucks

Why do I get the feeling all this digital control is going to back fire....has anyone ever thought that this is why PC sales are dying....people are seeing the future and the reality of it all...the computer doesn't give us control, it is just a means to control us.....

    Explain Further...

Can someone more clearly explain what this means? If I want to make a DVD from a firewire-captured home movie can I? How about then copying that DVD? Where does the copy protection kick in?

    Thanks...
