Total Impact announces miniature system

updated 07:59 am EST, Mon January 22, 2001

Total Impact today announced the briQ, a PowerPC-based network appliance computer sized for insertion into an industry standard half height drive bay. The Linux-based, customizable computing appliance "can be used as a processor addition or replacement for yesterday's older systems, as a processor base for today's new single board or cluster systems, or as the engine or control unit for tomorrow's embedded products." Systems with either a G3 or G4 processor start at $2,500.

    pardon the speculation...

couldn't this mean that if someone ported darwin, these machines would feasibly run MacOS X? further down the slippery slope, would that open the door for licensing?

    the problem with clones

The problem with the clones was that they ate into Apples' market share, when their original intention was to expand it. Again, this is specualtive, but if darwin was ported to one of these, then MacOS X could be binary compatible with it. It wouldn't eat into Apple's markets since Apple doesn't manufacture Network Appliances. Looking at the board diagram, with it's RJ-45 connector to run an Xserver over, it looks as if it could run in any box, PC or Mac. So what I'm getting at is that it has the appeal for the linux crowd and seems marketed to those who'd like to get a hold on the G4 hardware.

    BEIA maybe????????

Please i loved BEOS how did it ever hurt apple anyways.
About OSX on this there is a better chance that classic will run on it apple will never do it. Maybe hopefully apple will want to hurt x box sale and do it but dont think so.

    Server-in-a-box?

I do kinda like the idea of being able to set it up as a Linux Server and install it in the drive bay of my client machine -- a headless server that fits inside my computer. Spiffy. It appeals to me the same way James Bond's gadgets do.

You mean this thing shoots lasers too? Does it have a remote control?
