Apple New Zealand store launches, runs Microsoft app

updated 08:50 am EDT, Tue April 27, 2004

Apple New Zealand store

Apple's New Zealand online store is rather than Apple's own Mac OS X, according to Computerworld: "The new site, which launched on Monday, sells direct to the public and is similar in look and feel to the other Apple online stores around the world, however it is run by Renaissance, the local Apple distributor. Head of Renaissance's Apple division Paul Johnston says he is aware of the incongruity....'It uses SQL Server in the back end and the pages are written in ASP. If we wanted to change that over at a later date to PHP, which Apple uses, there's no problem with that whatsoever.'"

    They should be shut down

Period. Not a good message to send to your potential clients.

No M$ software should be running an Apple online store. What next - the servers are h*** Boxen?

    Apple use WebObjects

Apple use WebObjects which, as far as I am aware, can be deployed on any JSP compliant server. WebObjects applications are written in Java and not PHP.

    um... so what?

Microsoft uses some G5s for development of Xbox2 software. Why does Apple have to use only Macs? If they use a Sun box or an SGI system are they gonna get smacked as well?

    this guy is a grade-a-moron.
Apple uses webobjects. It's their own freaking software... look at the URL's on their site.

    Good for you, not us.

It really looks bad. Apple trying desperately to push Xserves and OS X Server in to the enterprise market, particularly promoting it's great webserving capabilities. Yet their own distributors decide to use non-Apple hardware and software for their own business! Apparently Renaissance believes Microsoft make better server software than Apply... maybe they're in the wrong business?

    Not Apple's

    This is NOT Apple's site!

It is a company that sells Apple computers.

Do a simple whois search on the domain. It's now owned by Apple.

    Grrrrrr....

    Not Apple

The site is not run by Apple. It's run by Renaissance Limited, Apple's New Zealand distributor.. A quick look at the 'About Us' section of the contact page confirms this.

Another vitory for 'copy and paste' journalism.

    good move.

Why would anyone CHOOSE IIS and all it's security issues, when they could easily run the site on any mac, including an old iMac G3 with Apache?

The bit about PHP is rather odd too. WebObjects, not PHP. They could even use WebObjects on IIS if they were so inclined (though, again, WHY????)

It's dumb. I could care less if they have windows boxes there for development purposes of some natures, or for some general grunt work, but if you sell servers, USE what you sell.
