Apple Store estimated ship dates increased

The Apple Store has modified the estimated ship dates for the PowerBook G4 and high-end Power Mac G4 systems. The estimated ship date for PowerBook G4 orders placed today has been increased from 21 days to 45 days. Similarly, 667 MHz and 733 MHz Power Mac G4s are now estimated to ship in 7-10 weeks, up from 6-8 weeks. 466 MHz and 533 MHz Power Mac G4s are available immediately, however. It's unknown whether the extended delays are a result of overwhelming demand or a worsened parts shortage. Apple was unavailable for comment. Several readers report that calls to the Apple Store revealed that their PowerBook G4 orders placed as early as ten days ago are also showing the added delay and are not expected to ship until the end of February. Hmmmm...

Maybe there's greater demand for the product than Apple had originally estimated? This can be only good since the earnings estimates for next quarter are based on the lower estimates. :)

high demand?

At least for the PowerBooks, it could simply be that demand is very high. I've ordered one, and I know of at least 3 other poeple who hadn't bought a new mac in several years who have already ordered a PowerBook G4, and I know of others who are planning to buy one soon, plus there was the story yesterday that CNN is buying a ton of them.

BTO also slow

I ordered a new 466 with a Zip drive and a SCSI card at noon on Jan 10 (27 hours after they were introduced. When I ordered, it was supposed to ship in 5 days. Now on the 19th of January I find out that it may not ship until the 28th. This is not a wierd BTO, but a stock 466 w/ Zip and SCSI. Oh, and I was supposed to have received priority ordering status, because my original order for a dual 450 w/Zip and SCSI was automatically canceled by Apple when the new machines were introduced. Something is very fishy about all this.

Vapor at Expos

Apple should quit announcing vapor and quit relying on Expos to announce products. If there wasn't an Expo would Apple have announced these so early? At the least, say "coming soon".

Like this wasn't expecte

I just bought the fastest notebook you can buy on the planet....A G3/500 Pismo for $2100. I came so close to buying a G4/400 for only $500 more, but I KNEW (like ANY Mac owner thats been awake these past 3 years knows) that it wasn't going to be release when Lord Jobs said it would. So I think I'm going to enjoy my Pismo 500 till about October when Apple should be releasing the second generation TiBooks and I could probably grab a first generation G4/500 TiBook for about $2700. Its just smarter this way.

Apple already said this

I ordered my 733 G4 a few minutes after Apple posted it on the Apple Store. At the end of the process, on the order confirmation page, the delivery time for the unit said 7-11 weeks, and this was on the day they were announced, during MacWorld!

So this is no surprise to me.

Delayed?

I placed my order for a G4 powerbook the day after they were announced. I received a call from Apple on Monday or Tuesday of this week to confirm my shipping address. They said that my order was all set and would ship at the end of this week (today) and that I should have it on Monday....so I'm guessing, or hoping, there was an early window of opportunity for those of us that purchased one right away...and that they'll ship "on time."

PBG4 demand causes delay

I know a couple people on AppleInsider who ordered PBG4's right after the keynote (as soon as the AppleStore was updated) and their orders are now at 'Phase 2' status.. in other words, Apple probably is going to ship units on time. If you place an order today, however, you'll have to wait longer - it's no mystery, and don't be so quick to blame Apple.

Why is this news?

I ordered my G4/733 minutes after it was announced. I was told by the person on the phone it would ship in 7-10 weeks. Why is this a surprise to anyone? Also, just to check, I went through the order process last week to see if the estimated ship date changed. Still 7-10 weeks. Never did I see it say anything else.

CNN gets 1st Dibs

Corporate clients get 1st crack; see if you don't agree these are the Apple customers who have forced regular customers to the back of the line:

Should one go on? Think again if you believe these product is literally 1st come, 1st serve.

Expect SJ to say as this year drags on: "We're makin' 'em as fast as we can . . ."

I have a saved order for one of the new Macs that I likely won't put through till close to MWNY, so at least Apple gets an idea of true demand right away. And I would never buy the very first copies of new product anyway--too many little kinks to smooth out. I fully expect the Mac I wind up with to have a build date of April or May.

Ah, but...

You guys that ordered yours on Day 1 and are saying "Hey, it was 7-10 weeks then, this isn't news!" You obviously don't expect for there to *always* be a 7-10 week delay, do you? 10 days have gone by since Jobs announced the new systems.

I for one went to configure a G4 this weekend and got the 6-8 weeks notice. I guess ship date varies on the orbit of Jupiter.

Honesty

At least they choose to tell us mere 'non corporate' consumers; plenty companies would not. When I have ordered something from a company over the phone or whatever, often I have been told it has been shipped, only to find out a week later it hasnt yet because .....etc

I would rather know at an early stage; I like honesty when i am using my hard earned cash to help their business out.

Phase 2 status

Phase 2 status is "building the unit" or whatever they call it. As soon as your Credit Card goes through as being ok (Phase 1) your order is changed to Phase 2. Phase 2 is the phase that can last forever... Phase 3 (order being packaged) and Phase 4 (order shipped) usually happen within a day of each other; the product then arrives a few days after that.

My PBG4 order has been on Phase 2 since a couple hours after I ordered the thing last week.

Dual 533 g4

Ordered a dual g4 the day after it was released... It said 10 days.. Called apple 2x times got 2 different answers. One said 21 days from that day or 21 days from the order. The other said 10-15 days... I don't know who to believe.. All I know is i hope it gets here soon..

Expected Delay

I'm in concurrence: placed an order for the 733 the day it was announced, got the 7-10 week hold time. I expect it to "Always" be 7-10 weeks, yes. Because in 7-10 weeks, Apple will still have a growing backlog of orders, not a magical pile of a million Macs ready for shipment. Everyone keep in mind: we're not just talking about a low-yield processor (only a few G4s per die will run @ 733) but a DVD-R/CDRW burner that isn't even shipping to anyone but Apple right now. (in the case of the 733 machines)

Personally - I think the original article here was irresponsible: I've never seen a 6-8 week ship time. Meanwhile, I ordered from Outpost, one of those priority Corporate Customers. So I expect I'll have mine pronto once Apple starts shipping. C'mon, we all knew we had to wait. Deal with it.

Well I ordered my dual 533 from the apple store 2 days ago with an expected date of 15 days delvery, only to be told today (via email) that I should expect it on Monday.. !!! I'll believe it when I see it but is it possible that they could deliver up to a week and a half early!!!

Same Song Different Year

I, for one, would really appreciate if Apple would follow its advertising and start to "Think Different". Has Apple, ever in it histroy, been able to deliver product when promised? Ever produced enough to meet demand? Except for those crappy Performas, I don't think so. Every year, its the same damn problem. You would think after 17 years, Apple would be able to figure out if they make cool computers, they should produce enough to meet demand and when produce them when they are promised.

Excuse me, I have to go yell at 3Com for holding up my Kerbango order for another month. Another company that cannot keep a shipping date firm.

This is Apple's MO, the make lots and LOTS and LOTS of grand promises and make you wait till Cisiphus actually succeeds in pushing the rock up the hill until they actually ship something. Not vapor, style

Those complaining about vaporware just don't get it. Apple is in the consumer business with style and flash key to success. All of these companies show and announce products before they are in mass production (such as Sony, Toshiba, and even sucky companies like Dell).

And don't forget the Playstation 2 fiasco. Apple's really done well the past few years (after s******* up production estimates horribly in the Amelio years).

My strange status

I ordered the dual 533 with the Cinema display on January 11th. They shipped the monitor the very next day. BUT, now when I got to the order status page it shows that there was a partial shipment. They list my dual 533 but with absolutely NO info on WHEN it will ship. No status on what I'm waiting on or estimated time... Nothing. I've called and talked to them and told them it would be nice to at least put a clue on the web page as to WHEN it is SUPPOSED to be done and ready to ship. As it is now, I can't tell diddly about my order. I love Apple but they need to get their doo doo together on some orders status. If our orders are going to be late or delayed, at least let us know! Another strange occurance. About every 2 or 3 days I will go to the Apple Store and build the EXACT same system I ordered. The estimated wait changes almost every other day. (Someone at Apple even confirmed that it changes every day). Anyway, it jumps anywhere from 10 - 21 days. Pretty strange.

Bam! Was that Emeril Lagase or Apple shooting themselves in the foot? Could have been a drive by vaporing! I think there sould be a *special instruction* section on the Apple Store checkout page which allows buyers to add the remark *fill or kill* for a specified delivery date. I think if the *management* understood that when you miss a shipping date you miss a sale things may improve. Further, the vapor dates possibly would get more realistic.

7 weeks from Jan 9th is Feb 27.

I ordered a PBG4 with an extra battery and an extra charger.

They shipped the charger two days ago. Yay! I get to play with the charger for 7 weeks until the laptop arrives.

Look... y'all act like this is new... It's been the same deal for years... products are announced at the expo and you actually get them AT LEAST 2 months later. (7-10 weeks). The only difference this time is that Steve ACTUALLY ADMITTED THIS... he said in the keynote that the big G4s wouldn't ship until Feb... well, that's right. The PowerBook issue is simple supply and demand... there's NO WAY anyone who orders one of those puppies TODAY will get it before April 1st. Personally, I'm waiting for a cube or Powerbook with the superdrive... or, I'll go with the revised powerbook (the one without 1st run defects... they ALWAYS have them... sorry) and hopfully apple will have a stand-alone firewire superdrive. Anyway, I know you want your new toys NOW... but get a grip... I'm thinking you'll have OSX before your powerbooks arrive.

733Mhz G4

No one ever claimed that the 733Mhz would be available immediately. Go back and check the MWSF announcement; they said then that 733Mhz machines would not be available right away.

As for the G4 Powerbooks, Apple has begun shipping them, but they have received a lot of orders and so now production can not keep up. Those who ordered right away after the announcement will be receiving their G4 Powerbooks next week. Anyone ordering today will have to wait a while.

This is not news. This is not a surprise.Apple did not do anything wrong here. They said that the high end G4 towers would not start shipping until the end of February and that is still true. The G4 Powerbooks are starting to ship now, but of course they do not have enough immediately for everyone. The same is true for almost any new product in any industry; if it becomes an instant success, then demand overwhelms the supply.

Stop being so quick to bad mouth Apple people.

MacProgress

Yesterday I pulled a 6400 Performa system (in it's day a thing of beauty even greater than its beauty today) used effortlessly and to advantage in a small business since 1996(?), and replaced it with an aesthetically coordinated, more beautiful "Snow" DVSE as "digital hub" for screaming productivity and imaging enhancements...brought to them by Apple Computer and Steve Jobs.

They are serially producing elegance, grace, power, and profit with logarithmic improvement for those who wisely choose to patronize them.

Good things ARE worth waiting for and how nice for more and more people to realize just how great Apple's hardware and software is for making like...better.

You TiPB, ACD, and G4 orderers...I hate you...NOT. Enjoy. My Pismo is a jewel, too...a work of art.

Local Dealer's order shi

My local Apple dealer (and my employer :-), the campus bookstore here, says that the two Powerbook G4/400 ordered on the afternoon of the keynote shipped the very next day (!) and are supposed to arrive today (1/19/00). Interesting. I think he was talking about some G4 desktops, b/c I haven't seen the shipment notification, but we'll see later today.

Secrets and Lies

If folks will elect politicians who will say anything to get elected, you have to figure that they'll also buy right into promises, claims and schedules of non-shipping products by manufacturers as well. It helps if the product is attractive, expensive, puffed by pop media, and hard to obtain.

Playstation II, nascent Miata or PT Cruser, Cabbage Patch Kids, X-Box. Hype today, ho-hum tomorrow.

A couple years back, Pope Jobs made a promise: not to announce products that weren't ready to ship. We've seen how long that promise lasted. Why believe him (or any other corporate 'politician') about anything else?

Back then, I ordered a Wallstreet PowerBook within the first hour of Steve Jobs' announcement. He said it would ship in a couple of weeks. It took a month. I was happy to settle for that, and I still love this thing even though I've had to tack on USB, FireWire and a 466MHz CPU. Got over $5K invested in something I couldn't sell for much more than a grand these days.

You have to keep this stuff in perspective. The new PB is thinner and lighter and a bit faster, but I don't see this new box as any sort of a breakthrough. Those are well worth waiting for.

Go to any CompUSA .
I was there yesterday and they recieved 5 each of the 466 and 533 systems.
As for the 667 and 733... Steve said in the Keynote they wouldnt ship for weeks. I think is because they use the new G4+ (with on die cache) which probibly hasnt shiped from moto yet. And the DVD-r drive wont be available for a few weeks still.

They're not "delayed", because they were never intended to ship in quantity for at least a month or more. Nice design is worthless due to slow shipping, high prices, lack of retail presence, and slower CPU speeds. Apple, I love ya, but I'm about to pull the plug and stop buying you...

Now the strategy is to announce, then see what demand is, then fill orders. That is why Steve announced the iMac months before it shipped. To see what demand is.

So, this is the same thing. They announce, get the orders, have the forcast, now they produce. Smart money move. They don't over-produce, hopefully.

yea, but they knew there would be high demand for PBG4 and the 733 G4's. so they shoulda cranked out maybe a quarter or so of what they sold last year, and in the event they oversold, they would have had a few weeks inventory, well below 11 weeks, say 1 or 2 extra. Stockpiling before a major show should be common practice, not what happens now. Id be much happier getting a machine I ordered in less than a week than waiting and watching as the wintel world announces newer and faster, when I could be working on the best.

I've never seen such a big group of whiners. You should be happy that demand is so high, Apple stock will rise and you can make some money, if you were smart.

Not only does Apple wait to see what demand is, but:

If you were iCEO of Apple and your last quarter was crappy, and didn't have a lot of good news, would you say, "Oh, we have some great products, but you are going to have to wait a couple of months."???

Sad truth is that you have to fudge and stretch the truth so the stock doesn't go down. Moto is dragging Apple down, and Apple has to do what it can to look good to the press and boneheaded analysts. They need to look viable after all the years of c*** they have been given (but they asked to be treated like c***).

This has been happening for years. If you believe you'll be receiving your products in the revised ESTIMATED time, I've got a bridge I can sell you!!!

This is my single largest complaint with Apple. Here I've got $7,500 to plop down for a 733MHz G4 and 22" Cinema display, but I'm not going to put myself though the aggravation and headache it would cause me waiting for revised time after revised time. Not to menion Apple telling me each time that I can cancel my order if I want to.

Making people wait 2-3 months for a product is ridiculous. I could say more, but I'm starting to feel sick to my stomach.

PBG4 Ship Date

Today I checked on my PB G4 (500/20G/128M /AP) which was ordered on 1/9/01 (and quoted a 21 day wait then). The Apple rep told me today that mine is among the first in the queue to be built and shipped first week of Feb. He implied that since I downgraded the RAM from 256MB to 128 MB that I might have to wait a little longer while they "custom built" the machine, but that on the other hand, I may see it a few days earlier (go figure).

He did say that he understood that 500Mhz models were not being made yet as they were still working on 400Mhz models. Would be interested in finding out if anyone has gotten a 500Mhz PB G4 yet.. I don't think too many of the Apple reps at the store really know what is going on....so the wait continues....

Depreciation Guarantee

Apple should impose a depreciation guarantee.

For each week you have to wait for a product, you receive $10 credit on the purchase price. Wait a month get $50 off. That would both get Apple's in gear for getting machines out on time and please customers who have to wait.

This is not new, what's more this is not unique to Apple.
These kind of VaporWare announcement happen all the time,
in all industries, but perhaps most in computing.

Many times, these tactics are part of a marketing plan
to gauge interest, and quantity. It used to be called
a survey.

However, Apple is still the most interesting hardware
manufacturer, and who better than Steve Jobs to build
this kind of excitement over new products.

Waiting for July Expo!

Just like I figured....
Waiting an extra 10 weeks now puts any delivery close to the July MacExpo....so I might as well wait to watch when Steve will bring out the newest & greates Macs ever...which won't be delivered on time...so I will wait for the Jan 2002 MacExpo....on & on over and over....

At this rate I am never going to be able to buy a new Mac.

New G4 shipments

If a business, currently losing money, has the opportunity to sell a large number of units to a large customer, what do you think would happen? Apple needs the unit sales. I think they do a good job balancing corporate vs. individual sales.
Having order from both sides, they genrally are first come first served.

According to my rep, there may be revised shipment data next week. The BTO shipments are the first to suffer delays.

Any company suffers delays on new products. Inventory costs alone make them cautious.

I'm happy to wait.

Here we are again - the same place we are for weeks after every Apple product announcement. Someone should give Stevie a lesson in what "shipping" really means...!
When will someone pull them up on this and prosecute them for misleading advertising..? It happens every time so it seems like it's comporate policy rather than unfortunate mistake... Not even Apple is *THAT* unlucky. ;-)

My advice (if only I'd listened to myself when the Cube came out) is sit back, stop looking at AppleStore and wait for the bundle deals and price cuts that will be here in 2 or 3 months time. They will only just have started shipping by then anyway, so you'll really only be waiting an extra couple of weeks and could save yourself hundreds.

learn to ride the tail

The way I manage these things is to always ride the tail end of Apple's product line, and buy just after new hardware is introduced. The "last year's model" strategy, if you will.

If I'm in the market to buy, about 2 weeks before a show happens I'll nose around on the web to get a sense for where prices are. Then, after the show happens, I get serious about finding deals, because there are *always* deals. When I find one that seems good, I buy.

Got a G3 350 this way, then an iMac 233 Rev. B, now a G4 400. I always know what to expect, the products are mature, they are in the channel with accessories available, and they typically hit a price floor that is forseeable ($1250 or so for lowend powermac, $2000 for powerbook, about $1000 for the sweet spot in the iMac line). So, you can plan ahead. I figure on about a two-year life cycle per machine.

You just have to learn not to want the latest and greatest, then Apple's slow rollouts never bother you. :-)

It's shipping already

Take it easy guys. the longer wait time is for new orders placed. I am on the PowerBook mailing list and somebody on that list has already received his PowerBook G4 today. He said he ordered on Apple Store the day of the announcement. I ordered one too so hopefully I will see it soon.

I don't understand where all this negative energy is coming from. It's not like Apple is the only computer maker in the world. If you don't like Apple, there are other companies to buy from.

What's the problem?!

First, to PeeCee weenies -- if you think that because people have to wait for their newest machine they should run over to Windoze, then things are far more pathetic in Gatesland than I ever imagined. Have you ever tried to buy a car? Guess what -- sometimes the model you want isn't in! Does that mean you should stamp your feet, march across the street and buy a Yugo? Gimme a break...

To the "Vaporware" group: do you even know what vaporware is? It's when a product is announced with great fanfare, but then it is NEVER RELEASED. If you also want to use the term to refer to deferred product shipments (which usually implies delays of several months as a minimum), then anything Microsoft has ever made would easily qualify, so don't get your shorts in a knot. Geesh.

As most users have said, the delay is no surprise -- Jobs annouced this very fact during his MacWorld address! For those believe the product should be available immediately on every occasion, consider the MacWorld a "pre-annoucement," and buy it when it's available in volume.

Just called Apple

... to check on the TiPB order I placed on the day of the Keynote (read: as soon as the Apple Store was taking orders) ...

The person told me that as of today, the wait is 45 days ...

Again, that's 45 days from *today*, not from when the order was placed ...

And this was not a BTO config ...

She was also unable to tell me where I was on the queue ...

A little frustrating but not wholly unexpected =/

ship date slip clarif.

I ordered my 733 1 day after they were announced, I received a 7-10 week ship expectancy. I do not know where the 6-8 week period came from. Bottom line - Apple is struggling still with Motorola and I'm sure if they could do somthing about it they would - why would they not want to ship product. Just hope this doesnt turn into a 500 ship situation and they finally say - oops cant ship at all until Q3. I think the G4 is a great processor and I would be hesitant to say this but bottom line is that Apple is getting kicked around because of Motorola's inability to produce chips that will compensate for demand, and havent been able to for over 1 year. Then there is IBM - I am sure Motorola has some sort of a limitation in reference to IBM's ability to make G4's in fear of stealing there revenue - sort of a "if we cant make it neither can you". Maybe Apple should consider using an intel or amd, with osx ability to port this may be a nice alternative.

They are *supposed* to get their first shipment of 200 Ti 'Books in on Feb 5th ...

They had 13 left in that first batch that are still available as of the time of may call (appx. 3:40pm EST) ...

No taxes, no shipping ...

Off to cancel my Apple Store order ... if I'm gonna have to wait, I might as well save a couple $$ =)

Same Story/Different Year

Every year it is the same old story. Apple announces new PB's in January, sends some out in Feb., fills intital orders in March, and fills the pipeline by May/June.

This isn't news, but a normal buisness pratice for Apple (just not normal for the rest of the world).

I hope they don't blame parts suppliers, again.

I'm fed up with Apple...

I must admit that I'm starting to become fed up with Apple. They've done quite a lot of bad moves lately or failed to do the right ones. But then they go announce a piece of beauty such as the TiBook and I'm all over that. Still I'm waiting to buy mine though. Not only because I don't have the money yet, but also because there still is a lot to be done to the TiBook; composite video out for example (the iBook has it, why not the TiBook? I want my DVDs on a TV dammit) and multiple mouse buttons (I didn't mind the single mouse button on my G4 since it was easily replaceable, but on the PowerBook?!? C'mon Apple, you know you need it!). And personally when I finally get to ordering it, I won't mind having to wait for it a bit, coz' it'll certainly be worth it.

I work for a certain large computer organization. Here's the deal: G4s are being delayed in large quantities because they are being siphoned off to use in new "smart" employee IDs. The combination of low power draw, small size, and excellent heat dissipation make them perfect for this application. On-chip cache is now repurposed as a low power-draw dynamic data storage area. I can't say much more, but the technology promises to integrate your work and personal information to allow you to do things that would really surprise you�for example, want a new car at 2 AM? No problem. Just swipe your card across a reader on the dealer's lot. Within about 90 seconds, the scanner will run a credit check, verify eligiblity (or not) set up an automatic payment plan through your bank, and authorize you to park in the secure lot at your company. Oh, and it acts as a key for the car and a gas card, too! Nedless to say, a product of this degree of innovation has precedence over the pedestrian use of computers in plain ol' laptops. There's been some buzz around this topic lately, but all of the publicity has been directed to the wrong documents. Gotta go.

I want a high end 733

What are you going to do. manufacturing has to be built in order to meet demand. do you know what it takes to master dvd's
today, encode mpeg and write to dvd. a lot more than $10,000.00 buddy. Jobs said that it takes 4 alti vec units to do this in a reasonable time. you cant just fry 4 of them on a G4 chip and say here you go sir. your computer is ready. ha, yeah right. this is so feakin' cool. but, manufacturing and piecing together this system by apple for $3,500 as apposed to a wintel build it yourself and cross your fingers type of deal, its definitely better for apple to do rather than me buying mpeg encoder boards and dvd mastering interfaces from sonic solutions (that work better on the mac anyway). loading all sorts of buggy drivers and capturing video using one driver and editing it in a totally different app. hen exporting it all to some other obscure program to burn. na, I'll wait 2 months for apple to do it for me.

Power Outages

I just thought I'd toss this out for anyone who's interested -- but silicon valley has been a victim of the power outages here in California for the past couple of days. They have been out of power for about 90 minutes a day, which typically means almost a half day of lost productivity, maybe more, as there is no warning of when the blackout will occur, and then it takes time to ramp back up. This affects production, shipping, and all of that stuff.

While a statement would be really nice -- if orders have already been outnumbering production, this is only making a bad situation that much worse. . . .

My Powerbook Order

I have a Powerbook G4 400mhz 20GB HD on order with the apple store. I bought an additional 256MB for $115 online which got here a day after I ordered it. Anyway I called apple a few days to check if my order had been processed, and had to have my card reprocessed. Now I asked the guy in the credit division when the laptop would ship. He said it would arrive in 6 days, 3 to build / config, annother for the 3 day fedex. Anyway i'm anxious for my laptop, and I hope the timeline the apple employee gave me comes true.

4 altivec units for MPEG2

Ha! The reality distortion field strikes again. Stop smoking crack, dude! You may need Altivec firing on all cylinders to encode a full-rez MPEG2 stream at an acceptable (but still slower than realtime) rate, but why bother when there are inexpensive ($250) cards that do the job in hardware in realtime?
Cards like the windoze version of the Radeon, for instance. For some interesting reason ATI has no plan to offer the same feature to Mac users.
I mean, there's nothing wrong with having a fast processor, but clearly doing MPEG2 encoding in software is absurd.
Of course, it's the only option left for us Mac addicts since NONE of the low-cost hardware encoders are Mac compatible.
Sigh.

I ordered my TiPB the day of the announcement, and was originally told that I'd have it by the 20th. Two subsequent calls I was told that it would ship out by the 20th. Now this c***...

Remember Steve "Hand" Jobs keynote speech? "We're starting this year with a bang--shipping our new PowerBook G4 in January..."

Um, no. According to Apple customer service (if you want to call someone with an indifferent/condescending tone customer service) today, the shipping date has been pushed out 45 days, for all but perhaps the lucky few (and I ordered mine on day one of the show).

It's appalling that Apple doesn't have the forsight to anticipate demand (I thought that Mr. Jobs and Co. were arrogant enough to do at least that) when they hype up the product like they did. Or maybe they're creating a shortage to project a facade of a super high demand for the company's product to give their stock price a much needed shot in the arm.

I love the fact that all you guys out there are berating Apple for being "liars" because they can't ship you the products you want fast enough - and then spend hours on this mac group enjoying all the whining about it. What strange people you are!

I ordered my PBG4 500 on the ninth, and am drooling over web pictures until it arrives. I'm hoping for early February (21 working days?) from that day.

As far as having the latest, fastest, most complete computer goes, I remember the old Navy saying: "If it works, it's obsolete."

If I want audio in to my powerbook, I'll be forced to have better sound by going digital through a USB port. If I can't write to Zip or any media (yet)- but I could store it in on-line memory I can access from any other computer. I'll also be looking for iDVD and the stand-alone read/write drive Apple (or a third party) will surely market soon.

Works for me. Besides, I'm replacing what was the fastest laptop on the planet (for about 6 weeks) - the 3400c. Then the G3 came out.

Blame motorola

Reason for delays is motorola.
They can't get chip yields high enough.
So what happens is that they have to hand test each chip to make sure it works properly. Apple had to do a lot of arm bending to get Motorola this far.
I can't believe motorola has dropped the ball this much.
Too bad IBM does not want to make Altivec G4s or that motorola is too afraid to let them make it.
Otherwise by now we'd have 1.5 Ghz G4s with the IBM logo on them and Motorola sifting through their turds.

Motorola is at fault

The low end powermacs are shipping as expected, so we know that Apple has its side of the deal finished; the new motherboards are all ready to ship, and waiting for the 7450 G4s. This is not the first time Motorola has screwed Apple, remember the first G4s, that didn't ship at all? All you people here are accusing Apple of lying, when really it sounds like its Motorola who's lying.

Give Apple some slack. Jobs said at the keynote that there would be delays. Now with the powerbook, it appears that Apple has gotten over twice as many orders as expected, so this could obviously cause delays. I understand the frustration at waiting for something you've ordered, but at least direct your anger at the right target: Motorola.

I check the day of the address and then ordered my 733 three days after MacWorld the time was always 7-10 weeks even the day of. As it is, we were all warned by Jobs in the keynote that supplies would be tight, and we should get our orders in quick. Sounds to me like it happened exactly like he said it would. Maybe checking sources before writing about imaginary issues would be a good idea.

You people seem to think that ordering it the day of the expo means that you're first in line. Get real! Do you know how many people are JUST LIKE YOU!!! and did the exact same thing? 35,000 people watched the webcast, and quite a few of them probably ordered the Tibook as soon as they could. Imagine 3500 orders coming in ONE DAY (I suppose that might be a conservative estimate?) for a product that you JUST INTRODUCED!!! Of course there will be delays!

If everybody keeps saying things like "You screwed us again, Apple!", then WHY THE HECK DID YOU ORDER IT THE FIRST DAY ANYWAY???

You got the order in, the product will show up at your door before it hits any stores, anyway. Be happy with what you're getting. If you don't like it, you could always go to Dell.

Expectations

Mac enthusiasts don't expect Apple to be like Microsoft or the many other companies which support "the PC side" of the industry. They want better products, more refinement & incomparable integration than their PC counterparts.

So, extrapolate to want *nothing* that the PC side offers (such as low prices), including announcing products which are ready to ship, when they're ready to ship. Don't fret in the delay, revel in yet another reason that Macs are unique!

IMHO, the person who said they got theirs is lying. They said they ordered it the day AFTER it was introduced, noone else has gotten one, they'll usually give you a tracking number as soon as they ship, this person has posted no evidence (pictures, etc.) that they really have it, etc.

Some lucky winner...

Some lucky winner gets my 733 G4!

See, Apple did this thing where they authorized my credit card for the $3800 for my 733 G4. And since they don't know when it's going to ship out, I refuse to leave that much of my credit line tied up for 7-10 more weeks. So s**** 'em. I'll wait and get a MP G4 733 (or whatever they've got) once they get their act together... Which probably means I'll give up waiting altogether in a few months.

In fact, Steve's recent comments about April lead me to believe that MP G4s may come sooner than we think, especially in light of OS X's upcoming debut. Cancelling and holding off a few more months might be the best call to make.

Anyway, I was so incensed about my credit card being authorized this far out from seeing the computer that I cancelled. I've been without a desktop computer for a year now, i can wait longer. h***, I'd be waiting a while longer anyway even if I did order it.

So for those of you getting a 733 someday, you're welcome. Enjoy... I'll get the 2nd generation 7450 with the bugs ironed out and perhaps within a more reasonable delivery window.

And i definitely WON'T be buying from the Apple Store. I've ordered 5 computers from them. I have yet to have a positive experience, whether it be shipping problems, delays, or whatever. On the 733 I checked the order status site only to find my original BTO configuration was cancelled, then re-ordered with the exact same specs except an ATI 128 PCI card was added, and the cost to go along with it. Since I didn't WANT that, I called and they changed it back. But what if I hadn't checked the order? What dumbasses... couldn't believe it.

Good luck to all those placing orders. I recommend adding prayer, regular rubbing of a rabbit foot, and wearing a garland of 4-leaf clovers to your daily routine if you entertain the hope of seeing any of the newly announced high-end stuff (including PB G4/500) before March. Mid March at that.

I'm a 12 year Mac user, but I'm losing faith here... Can cracking 500mhz with some consistency REALLY be that hard?

I have waited two years for a Powerbook revision/new design/G4 etc. I used Macs all my life (I am 22) but went to Compaq for College. I HATE IT! I am typing on it right now. I ordered the Ti the day they were announced and want to get back to the land of the Macs. I think I deserve one.

We were told the 733 wouldn't be out until the end of February. If you track the industry news, you'd know that the Superdrive will just becoming available by then. No surprise there.

I just ordered mine from MacMall (Outpost is a good idea too) a few days ago. I'll be happy when it gets here, but I'll do fine with my trusty G3 until then. It's still a fine computer. I'm getting the G4 for the superdrive and because, as a developer, I want to have an machine with altivec (velocity engine) units on it that I can twiddle.

It is so common that there is a delay before new products are availabe in quanity in just about every industry that I really can't see why all these temper tanutrums are cropping up. Take a chill pill, appreciate all the use you got from your current machines (accept the poor guy with the Compaq) and make do until your machine arrives. If I can wait, then probably the vast majority of you can too.

Just be happy

These are great products and are worth waiting for. There is a limited supply on these fast processors, And there is no way for Apple to have a crystal ball on quantity of orders. So just be happy when you get your order, and get excited during the wait by looking at specs or photos.

I have a G4PB 500 on order. Sold my Pismo on eBay already. I will miss the mobility for a while, but I will be patient knowing I will get a great system soon enough.

And cheers to Apple for being the leaders in this industry in design and usability. Without Apple, the whole computer industry would suffer from lack of innovation. Just look a the AirPort, is anything as cool as that?

Listen, all of you people acting like the corporate world is cheating you out of getting your computer on time....if they weren't ordering a ton of Apple products Apple wouldn't even be here!!!!
The reason the big corporate clients get first dibs on products is because their orders are all guaranteed at several million at a time, not 2-3 thousand dollars. True, your needs for the product is just as relevant but if you were a company in great need of orders to save your butt would you let small time buyers have first crack or a corporate client who buys EVERY YEAR and in bulk quantities?

Bunch of Babies?

Y'know, Apple could have avoided this problem if these weren't the first machines to climb above 500mhz in almost a year while the Intel world rockets toward 2GHz... Megahertz myth or not, those are some fast machines. And I'm talking day-to-day use fast, not "Photoshop bake-off tailored towards the G4" type. I won't even go into the public perception issues regarding megahertz vs. actual performance, except to say that bigger the gap gets, the more Apple's claims of "3 times faster than a P4!" sound like desperate cries for attention from the naive masses. Cuz at quake 3, a Pentium 3 500mhz with the a middle range graphics card can smoke Apple's 733 flagship in a framerate comparison pretty handily. Wonder why they don't use that measuring stick to compare the processors onstage at Macworld Expos?

So spoiled brats? Maybe. But I look at it more as if you wrung out a wet rag over the mouths of thirsty desert wanderers, you'll find those who don't get a drink are going to be pretty bitter about it. And Apple should have anticipated that. They're going to have to have another Macworld in tokyo in Feb aren't they? Why not hold back the announcement until then, rather than saying "it's going to be a while" and then several weeks after that saying "it's going to be a while longer than the previously announced while."

If this was some holding action to get the journalists back on the Praise Apple bandwagon that the recent months' problems so handily knocked over, it was at the cost of consumer faith. Because it's the delays, especially after a product is officially announced, that kill customer faith. If it's not ready, fine. don't tell us about it. I love that Bungie's release date is 'We'll release it when it's finished" for their games. Takes all pressure and expectation off, and when they announce a date, it is ROCK solid. Apple could learn a lesson from them. Too bad Microsoft bought them first. The lesson will be taught on an Intel machine now.

Ti G4 500

I ordered mine online as soon as they put the new products up. I was fortunate enough to have a credit on my charge card from a Dell laptop that I returned. If they make me wait another couple or few weeks, that's ok. I am sure going to have fun with that little beastie when I do get it!

I'm amazed

at how many people take this so personally.

People are also so out of touch to think that this only happens to Apple. They also don't check their calendars to see that 7-10 weeks is end of February through March. This is stuff we knew. If we were paying attention, we'd see the ship dates slipping 1-2 weeks.

Try not to take personal offense at shipping dates for computers.

Some perspective...

I ordered TiPB on the 9th... and even if it doesn't come until early March... so what? Yeah... I'd LOVE one now... but I only have to think back to a year ago... I was using a Sony Vaiaoaoioa (or however it's spelled)... and moved to a G3PB. The best move I ever made.

Have you considerd the slow introduction of faster processors from Motorola may be Motorola's way of getting back at Steve Jobs for killing the clones. Motorola seemed to be introducing faster processors at lightning speed when they were making clones. "Vaporware"

Let's talk about terms for a moment. I can only assume the people who are tossing around the term "vaporware" for Apple's saddly common fault of missing ship dates on newly announced products, are either new to the computer world or are suffering from poor memories.

"Vaporware" is a term for products that are announced in order to pre-empt or undermine the efforts of a competitor, and then never actually ship, or are shipped as under-engineered, un-supported products. Unless you don't believe Apple will actually ship the PowerBook G4, or that it will be less than a very high quality Notebook computer, you are misusing the term "vaporware."

What Apple continues to do (which I do not think is good practice, by the way), is over-optomistic marketing at best, and downright deceit at the worst. But actual "vaporware" practice usually ends up helping the company doing it, while Apple's habit is only harmful to the company.

And here I thought Steve Jobs was humbled with Apple's financial probems. I just KNEW they would slip the dates on the new Macs...people were fools to believe they would get the new PowerBook G4 this month. I have started boycott procedures and come next week you'll be reading in the news about the boycott of all Apple products. TAKE THAT STEVE!!!!

Powermac g4 Ship-date

I ordered my Powermac.

Dual 533 from apple. I was told 10 days.. Called them up they said longer.. but yesterday i got an e-mail that it shipped. They didn't even take 10 days to get the order through.

People you guys need to remember something. When steve Jobs made the announcement he said the Powermac will be available now.. While the higher end will take longer and the Powerbook will be available at the end of the month. It has not even gotten to the end of the month, and people are complaining.

Guys please, if you want a machine today buy one of the older models. Want a new model then wait. Even other companies like dell make an announcement then ship it later..

I wish i could belive it!

Well it seems that nobody wants to say it but for those of you who have placed orders w/ apple store, they are using your money to finace themselves, at NO INTEREST CHARGE! get it!, Steve knew about the low inventory in G4 chips and went out, told mac users that the computers were ready to order, and it was know by Apple that it could not deliver, and still HE promised, and that is the reason why we all are here to talk about "Apple not been able to deliver again and using lots of money from US Macuser hoping to get aproduct that know we know is not and will not be there for a long time, longer that what Apple had promised...... It is really sad for me to say, but I am giving up on Apple products and capability to be honest......sorry guy get used to it. Once again we were promised something, and Apple let us down. Hey STEVE next time do not say anything do not show product that can not be delivered "because it isn't there".......

well they do charge your Credit card, or else they do not get your order ready,......DUHDUHDUH. and Apple does get almost istant transfer of funds from credit card companies. What did you think apple would just hold on to your credit card number and try to charge the total after they have done all the preparation of the system you order! come on get real, sorry guy we do not want to belive it but it is happening before our eyes, just another dirty trick from apple. remember the G4 systems a few months back when the excuse was that the chips could not be produced, and every order got changed to a slower speed. everyone still got charge the original price, that was another dirty trick played by apple......... now you tell me how can YOU explain that!!!!

Delayed - got monitor

I also ordered a 733 after original Dec order cancelled. Apple shipped the monitor in 2 days. Bet it was known about delays. Not customer friendly to ship a monitor that justs sits dark staring at me. Expediated, I'll believe it when I see it. Maybe they will be shipping OS-X with the unit buy the time it gets shipped. Wonder if I will have it in time to do my corporate taxes, need to install turbotax (heaven forbid intuit makes Mac professional version). Won't hold my breath.

objective info

ordered my Ti-book at 2:30pm on annoncement day (1/9), told it should be rec'd 1/31. Checked back twice and the dates have slipped to 2/5, then 2/9.

45 days from now is March 5th or so. It is delayed enough from 'the end of Jan; being produced as we speak' as to warrant folks being annoyed.

Hence, I tend to side with those who are irked with Apple, because of what seems to be an intentional bit of disinformation, if not deception. While I am a recent Mac convert, reading about the past history of Apple's product announcements makes this disinformation/deception seem commonplace if not corporate policy.

It is amusing to read the posts of folks rebuking those who are ticked off along the lines of 'stop whining or return to the dark side' et al cultic nonsense. Such blind defense of Apple is akin to the mom who describes her delinquent and never out of trouble sons as '...but them is good boys..." (to quote an X-Files episode) -- a comment more closely resembling dimentia than reality.

Dual or Single

Let's get off the delay tag a little onto something else. I'm in the process of getting myself set up for the forthcoming May-for-Mac version. Can you guys give me an idea what machine I should go for, the dual or single processor? Apart from the fact that the single has a long waiting time, and the dual shipping now :-) From a technical point of view which one would be better suited for Maya?

i told everyone afrer san fransisco, don`t buy a new powerbook G4 before macworld New York. They can`t ship in time and there will be several changes till NY.
Tell me whats better on the titanum as on the pismo, exept the case? Is there a better busrate? is there a better resolution for the monitor?

This was mentioned by Steve in his Keynote last tuesday in SF. He said that those that ordered early would get there, but Apple was anticipating more demand than supply. I'm not suprised though, these are hot machines. Oh yeah, I'll have my PB G4 by Monday also. I've been tracking it :).

First orders ship Jan24th

I called the apple store twice -to see if the stories matched. I ordered my Tipb G4/400 with 256 ram. I ordered mine as soon as the apple store was up and running on the 9th. Both times I was told that my powerbook would ship on the 24th! I didn't ask about the other configurations.

I think the delay will apply only to those who ordered the machine on later on. It is only logicall that apple can only fill so many initial orders, after that everything gets pushed out. Being in manufacturing myself, although not computers or tech, this is a natural function of the supply-demand production cycle. If you have excess demand, inital production will only fill initial orders. You can't keep quoting the same ready to ship date indefinitely -at some point you have to pass the ability to satisfy the original ship date -for any company.

This is just a simple case of the early bird getting the worm. I look forward to recieving my new laptop at the end of this week!

In the end...

...it all evens out. I mean, think about it. It takes about 2 months or longer for Apple to actually ship everything they announce (Save the cube), and it takes 2-3 months to get rid of leftover inventory if they don't price cut the h*** out of it a month before they announce the new products, so really it all works out in the end.

PB G4 - Italy

I placed my order for a G4 PB 500 on 01/10, and AppleStore Italy stated that it will be shipped in 21 days (01/31?).
Today I have called a dealer here in Italy, and they said that PowerBook G4 400 and 500 are available in their shop and, if I need one, they will be able to ship it to me in two days; one more thing: they sell it about 600.000 Lit. (280 $) less than AppleStore Italy!
I'm guessing if try to close my order with AppleStore and re-order the PowerBook from this dealer....:-(:
Anyway, "kudos" to AppleStore, again; I tried to order from them (February 1999) a PowerBook WS 300, and, after a few week, I bought it in a shop as they weren't able to ship it "on time".
I'm afraid to say this, but AppleStore works well only for "accessories",(even if they are more expensive than most mail-orders), but when is time to buy a CPU, I'll rather go to my friendly neighborood computer shop.

Just More Apple c***

I've read about 70 messages in this thread, and I keep coming across people who either dont mind the delay or think that its normal. Whats the deal here? I know that the company always mistates its shipping dates on new products, but that doesnt make it ok. All you people who dont care that your ship date has been pushed back from 6 to 10 weeks or whatever are blind loyalists. Why should you have to wait 2 months or more to buy a damn computer? In that amount of time, the rest of the pc industry will have reduced prices and included better components in thier computers. c*** like this is what makes the rest of the world continue to view Apple as a shaky company that, while can be given credit for some innovation, is not attractive to invest in or buy products from.

All of those who say "Its not Apple's fault that Moto cant produce chips" have thier head up thier asses. As a customer, what the h*** do you care about WHY apple cant make the systems? It's APPLE'S fault for not having a second supplier of chips (I know they have IBM but IBM doesnt make the G4.) Apple, right now, could have 1ghz G3s from IBM in their systems but they dont. That is their fault. Bad decisions, poor strategy, and missing already horribly long ship dates are keeping Apple from being the company it could be.

PB G4 - Italy - Update

I have just received a phone call from AppleStore Italy (which is actually located in the Apple plants in Cork, Ireland, and takes care of all European AppleStores) and a kind girl named Cristina said that it is impossible that dealers can receive Apple products faster than people who have placed orders on AppleStore. She also said that, maybe, the shop placed an order for a few TiPBs on the AppleStore just after Jobs keynote, and now they are "catching" clients selling PBs under their real cost; Cristina confirmed the expected shipping times in 21 days plus a couple days for DHL to ship it to my door: this means the first days of February (...I hope so, as February, 3rd is my bithday....what a better present than a brand new PB!?!).
One more thing: I I've just seen on www.xlr8yourmac.com site a benchmark comparison between PB G4/500 - Pismo 500 - an PM G4 500 DP done on January 19th; where the heck did Rob ART Morgan (of www.barefeats.com) find his PB G4 to test? Heaven knows!

She also said that, maybe, the shop placed an order for a few TiPBs on the AppleStore just after Jobs keynote, and now they are "catching" clients selling PBs under their real cost; Cristina confirmed the expected shipping times in 21 days plus a couple days for DHL to ship it to my door: this means the first days of February (...I hope so, as February, 3rd is my bithday....what a better present than a brand new PB!?!).
One more thing: I I've just seen on www.xlr8yourmac.com site a benchmark comparison between PB G4/500 - Pismo 500 - an PM G4 500 DP done on January 19th; where the heck did Rob ART Morgan (of www.barefeats.com) find his PB G4 to test? Heaven knows!

RESEARCH PEOPLE!!!

I am another one of those that ordered on the day of the Expo. 667 G4. 7 to 10 weeks on that date. THERE HAS NEVER BEEN A SHIP DATE OF 6 TO 8 WEEKS. I'm waiting and playing with my old 7500. Yes, I'd like my new hardware ASAP. As far as pre-announcing chips/mobos/computers, EVERYONE does it. h***, Intel is one of the worst. Announce the P4 is shipping when they have 1000 ready to go and even companies like Dell are left out in the cold. Same thing that Motorola is doing. You don't hear PC weenies (oh, I use one too, work and home. h***, I BUILT mine.) screaming because of this. They sit and wait. I could cancel and order a dual 533, but I'm satisfied to wait for the faster machine. Oh, and I am NOT a blind loyalist. Apple has problems. Mot has problems. EVERY company has problems. I'm just willing to overlook a few.

I talked to a sales rep today (1/22/2001) and they're saying 45 days from the order date. Also, they said an e-mail will be going out explaining why there is a delay and most likely it will give you the option of cancelling. This is much like the one I got when I ordered a G4/500 originally.

Furthermore, I checked with my university's bookstore, and they too are affected by the delay as are many retail companies.

Apple really knows how to piss people off, eh?

Anybody watch the Keynote

Didn't anybody watch Jobs' Keynote at Macworld? He explicitly said that the G4/733s wouldn't be available in quantities until March, and the Titanium PowerBooks wouldn't be available until at least the end of January. His lips moved, sound came out...

Two of the people I attended the Keynote with ordered Titanium PowerBooks from their cell phones on the way out of the auditorium and were quoted delivery at the end of January or the beginning of February. Why are people so surprised and angry that the machines are going to ship when Jobs said they'd ship, rather than immediately?

I'm looking for a bag to put my new powerbook G4 when i get it. But being 13.4" wide it's hard to find one that size. anyone have an idea where to look?

f*** apple.

i was one of the thousands who ordered their powerbook on the day of the announcement. i was originally quoted (by three different reps) that my order would ship out by the 20th of january. subsequent calls got different answers - i think they just have a lottery ball machine with different dates and pull one out when they get a call. i was informed about the 45 day shipping date yesterday,and today i was told that because mine was a bto it would be even longer.

i told the customer service rep (one of the many reps i've dealt with that had that "we're apple and we don't give a s**t about our customers attitude") to cancel my order. when asked for my reason, i replied "figure it out".

i've had enough of apple's c***. i hope their bottom line blows this quarter. this is the time for people to cancel their orders and make do with what they have - collectively people can give apple a love note where it hurts most - their bottom line. mr (hand) jobs can shove it up his a** - he should just go away. b******.

funny, this scenario is frighteningly similar to my experience with handspring last year.
